De quoi la nature est-elle le nom ?
Représentations de la nature dans l'art, l'art appliqué et sa critique contemporaine
L’objectif de cette journée d’étude est d’interroger les enjeux de la représentation de la « nature » dans les arts et les lettres, et son appropriation, par la création et la critique contemporaine. Quels échos ces réflexions sur le concept de nature ont-ils dans le monde de la création et le monde artistique ? Quelles créations au nom de la nature, ou volontiers déconstructionnistes, émergent aujourd’hui ? Quel est leur sens ? Quels enjeux de pouvoir ces choix de représentation peuvent-ils sous-tendre ? Quelles évolutions herméneutiques se dessinent, enfin, en lettres et arts en réaction à ces débats ?

Contemporary arts and nativeness
Cette journée d’étude part du constat de la place de plus en plus importante des appellations « autochtone » et « indigène » dans les mondes de l’art contemporain international. Elle a pour objectif d’interroger les pratiques, les identités et les catégories. Il s’agira de se demander quelle théorie culturelle de l’autochtonie peut aujourd’hui être proposer, et depuis quelle situation. On entend déplacer la focale des questions institutionnelles vers celles des processus créatifs, des identités assignées vers les pratiques par lesquelles l’individu s’auto-désigne, voire se désidentifie. L’indigénéité pourrait être, à cet égard, un outil permettant de déjouer les pièges de l’identité, dans lesquels la création contemporaine est de plus en plus fréquemment prise.

Mental maps": between memory transcription and symbolic projection
TRANSCRIPT
The notion of "mental maps" will therefore be considered according to two different meanings and uses: 1) the internal representation of a space travelled through (cognitive map) and 2) the representation of a set of entities or concepts (mind map). The terms "memory transcription" can be understood as the translation and recording on a graphic support of elements present in the mind. The terms of "symbolic projection" are conceived as the fact of externalizing by the means of signs or symbols on a graphic support, the two types of representation: the representation of a traversed space or the representation of a set of entities or concepts. The points of contact, crossover, reversal, between what could be called "representation of space" and "space of representation" are little explored. How can we better apprehend the complex notion of "mental map"? The question of memory transcription? Of the "symbolic projection"? Can we identify meeting points between these two polarities and if possible a continuum?

Le colloque interdisciplinaire et international « Mise en scène des territoires et stratégie de marques : essor et pratique innovante » a pour objectif d’amener à une connaissance plus fine et plus approfondie des représentations des territoires et des marques territoriales, de leur articulation, de leur fonctionnement. Il s’agit également de mieux comprendre leur utilisation par les parties-prenantes, publiques ou privées, à l’intérieur ou à l’extérieur du territoire, qui les mobilisent sciemment ou non dans le cadre d’une production touristique, artistique ou même politique ; et ainsi de faire émerger des pratiques innovantes autour des trois axes suivants : les stratégies de marques, un enjeu politique et économique ; les stratégies de marques, un enjeu politique et économique ; le territoire, un outil créatif.

Image, Cartography, Knowledge of the City after the Council of Trent ("In_bo" vol. 12, no. 16)
Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the Italian political geography was polarized by a number of cities of different sizes and traditions: Rome and Florence, Milan and Naples, Genoa and Venice, Turin and Modena, either ancient republics or new dynastic capitals, satellites of the great European monarchies or small Signorias. The conjunction — less frequently the conflict — between the mandates of the Council of Trent and the interests of the ruling élites of those cities set the foundation for novel forms of social, cultural and spiritual control, fostering new urban structures and policies, deeply conditioned by the presence and government of the sacred.

Creating ruins or showing ruins in cinema
Ce thème nous est suggéré par l’action actuelle, à l’échelle mondiale, de la démolition et de l’abattement des statues, des stèles dans un geste de destruction volontaire des vestiges, symboles et icônes du passé liés à l’histoire coloniale et impériale, acte que l’on peut considérer comme une mise en ruines en tant que telle. Pouvait-on imaginer une liquidation des ruines-vestiges du passé pour signifier la ruine d’un passé ?

Tracing the city: city symphonies in reverse and the cinematic apparatus

What are city symphonies reflecting in their contemporary cinematic versions? How are filmic dispositifscapturing and documenting the city as an entity which is both subjective and intersubjective? As Richard Koeck suggests, in his essay Cine-spaces : Cinematic spaces in architecture and cities (2012), it is perhaps from the vantage point of the of the simulacrum that we must understand cinema's inscription within the post-modern city. Indeed, what if we began to think about the city as a visual system based on movements, lights and bodies – one we could explore in a cinematic, cinetic or kinesthesit way? By using film as a lens through which to see urban spaces and places, it would be less a question of showing the placement of architecture, but of seeing how much post-modern architecture, for instance, is a cinematic phenomenon, an urban décor in motion (Las Vegas, Dubai, Macao…).

Bodies in the city: norms and disparities in the 19th century
Arts et savoirs journal on OpenEdition
La recherche en littérature et en sciences humaines – les études dixneuviémistes en particulier – continuent de témoigner régulièrement de l'engouement suscité par la question de la représentation des corps, propice à une multiplicité d'approches et de croisements disciplinaires, qu'ont nourris en particulier les travaux d'Alain Corbin et Georges Vigarello. Les mutations que connaît l'espace urbain au XIXe siècle imposent aux corps de nouvelles normes, dont peuvent faire état le roman réaliste, la littérature dite panoramique ou encore la presse, et définissent dans le même temps de nouvelles marginalités. Dans un contexte qui se caractérise par un renouvellement des méthodes d’observation scientifique, mais aussi par des réaménagements urbains et l'inauguration de nouveaux lieux dans la ville, il s’agira d’interroger la scientificité du regard que porte le XIXe siècle sur les corps voués à occuper cet espace.

Urgent issue of The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge
This special issue, Tilting, seeks to take up themes that have animated the Blackwood’s program and mandate throughout the last several years: questions of connectivity, the challenges of public and private space, community and/in isolation; imperatives to re-structure modes and methodologies of care, including revaluing care work, confronting collective care responsibilities within colonial and capitalist structures, and engaging with the infrastructures, aesthetics, contestations, and radical possibilities of mutual aid; responses to the precarization of art, labour, and life; interest in what modes of knowledge production, circulation, and re-distribution are vital to us now, and how these networks might take new form. These urgencies continue to drive Blackwood programming (and this forthcoming publication), supporting and activating artists, curators, and writers who incite us to be responsive, critical, and answerable.

Following in the footsteps of Fernand Braudel, an increasing number of recent studies show that the Mediterranean basin might be considered as a “borderland”, “borderscape” or “Frontier” suggesting that this area is not strictly a border between Christian and Muslim civilization, but a basin in which the two traditions and cultures meet and overlap, with an extraordinary variety of reactions to the hegemonic practices (acceptance, conflict, refusal, dissent). The aim of this conference is to bring together scholars who will discuss, from different perspectives and with a multidisciplinary approach, the variety of themes (topics) which revolve around the common issue of reflecting the problem of borderlands as a consequence of the encounter between Christendom and Ottoman Empire in the Early modern Mediterranean. The starting point of examination will be images, i.e. the usage of images (pictures, mental images, literary images and other visual representations …) as historical evidence.

Displaying the social history of migrants: content, scenography, public engagement
Donner à voir l’histoire sociale des migrations: contenus, scénographies, médiations
We seek proposals from post-doctoral scholars, recent PhDs, as well as those in the final stages of their dissertations with a background in related fields, in particular migration studies and social history, especially as they intersect with museum studies and/or public history. Participants will discuss, from a theoretical and a practical point of view, the best ways to display, in an exhibition context, the daily experience of past migrations in all their social dimensions.

LGBTI and Queer Arts, Cultures and Activisms
In France, a few years after the law authorizing same-sex marriage, LGBTQ associations are now facing new struggles, fighting for access to assisted procreation or the creation of a communal archive center. Drawing on these dynamics, this conference aims at interrogating the bonds between LGBTQ forms of arts, cultures and activisms. We look forward to opening a space for academics and grassroots activists, whether they be engaged in institutional collectives or not, to exchange, reflect and dialogue. LGBTQ-related topics appear to be often overlooked in French research networks. We aim to make it more visible and richer, and make it dialogue with local, national and international networks of academics and activists.

Manufacturing collective identities. Art at work in the contemporary era (19th-21st centuries)
Les derniers siècles (XIX-XXIe) ont été le terrain d'une reconfiguration incessante des identités collectives et de leurs imaginaires. Ces fluctuations sont le résultat des transformations majeures que sont les révolutions politiques, les phénomènes de modernisation industrielle, les nouvelles dynamiques de territorialisation et de mondialisation. Par conséquent, il est important pour l’histoire de l'art d'engager une interprétation de l'œuvre artistique en l'intégrant aux facteurs extérieurs. Dans une volonté de s'éloigner des schémas traditionnels, qui excluent, désengagent, décontextualisent et dépolitisent, le monde artistique interroge le lien entre art et société, entre création et construction des identités collectives. Ce sont d'ailleurs l'émergence, la grande diversité et le caractère mouvant de ces dernières qui sont ici sujet d’intérêt.

The conference aims to explore the relationships established between cinema and urban areas. We want to stress the connections woven between cities and cinema, films, fiction and documentaries – important unconventional sources for the understanding of social and cultural contexts. We intend to focus on the modalities used in films to tell stories – through images and speech – concerning cities, territories, and places, residents’ lives in relation to spaces, to buildings, to landscapes, as well as to its urban culture as a whole. The perspective we have chosen for this conference is interdisciplinary and cinema will be considered as a medium to be understood and interpreted in several, possibly comparative, ways.
