Borders in the Americas – Integration, Security and Migrations
In the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union, many analysts and experts argued that the world had reached the “end of history” [Fukuyama, 1992] and that regional and local organizations and free trade agreements (among which the European Union appeared to be a model of integration) signaled the emergence of a world without borders. Yet, thirty years later, the reality seems to be altogether different. Today, it is clear that “borders are back”. Whether these borders are challenged, violated, transcended, consolidated, or integrated, they remain necessarily at the heart of the political debate. This symposium will focus on a specific geographic area: the Americas.

Online Course on the US Original Constitution and its Reception in Brazil
In times of Covid19, the Federal University of Paraiba, UFPB, opens this course to the global audience. Students from the world will have the opportunity to discuss the USA and Brazil's constitutional history from the Founding Era to the end of the nineteenth century with an instructor and Brazilian students of its Graduate Program in Law. The UFPB offers these lectures through the Google Meet platform with a limited number of spots for better development of the studies and discussions amongst participants. Some international scholars will take part in the course as special guests presenting seminars about their newly published books or legal articles in which they are authors on subjects connected to constitutional matters. 100% online course.

Frontier(s) and Frontier-zone(s) in the English-speaking world

It may be argued that any frontier is the expression of what is discontinuous, of the existence of an ‘inside’ and of an ‘outside’, in short, that a frontier is an attempt to keep the ‘other’ at bay, whatever the meaning of the term – a given geographical territory, or a specific political entity, or a different culture, or else all of these put together. These considerations are in tune with the etymological origin of the word ‘frontier’ itself, i.e. anything that helps a group of people ‘develop a united front’. Examples abound, from the so-called ‘natural’ frontier of this or that country to Brexit, to the wall that President Trump has set out to build between his own country and Mexico.

La journée veut permettre de discuter ensemble d’un sujet qui n’a pas encore gagné sa légitimité critique et universitaire : la comédie américaine des années 1980.

Left-wing radicalism in the United States: a foreign creed?
Special Issue, “Transatlantica” (journal of American Studies)
This Transatlantica issue will analyze the way in which the construction of radicalism as foreign to US-American identity was received by radicals themselves, to see how they reacted to the branding of their beliefs as un-American, and how they devised counter-discourses in order to Americanize their ideas, sometimes leading to conflict and contradiction. How can the language of patriotism be combined with a belief in internationalism ? What coalitions, what political alliances can be built while maintaining a revolutionary stance ? How can the class struggle be rooted in a discourse on US-American society without succumbing to the sirens of exceptionalism ?

La session récurrente de « présentation des travaux » a pour objectif de faciliter la diffusion et la visibilité de nos travaux dans la communauté scientifique internationale ; faciliter la constitution de futures collaborations (publications, programmes derecherches collectifs…). Dans une perspective d’interconnaissance, nous invitons tou·te·s les chercheur·es et doctorant·es s’intéressant aujourd’hui aux villes nord-américaines à présenter leurs recherches, qu’elles soient achevées ou en cours.

This international conference in political studies and political philosophy wishes to explore the notion of compromise in its transnational dimension, in order to test the relevance of a cultural and global approach to compromise. The topics addressed by the conference are the following: Can we develop morally right and wrong compromise typologies? Can we propose a universal ethics of compromise or does compromise vary depending on the socio-cultural history of a country? To what extent is culture relevant in shaping types and norms of compromise?

Nous accueillons des contributions sur les différentes périodes de l'histoire, jusqu'à la période très récente.

Nombre d’actrices et d’acteurs, sans s’inscrire dans un militantisme organisé, mobilisent des discours sur le genre et les femmes pour intervenir dans leurs domaines d’activité propres (médias, politique, médecine, justice, etc.). Dans quelle mesure ces jeux sur et avec le genre, ces usages - et mésusages - contribuent-ils in fine à façonner les rapports sociaux de sexe ? Les discours ordinaires (au sens où ils ne sont pas organisés sous une forme militante explicite, mais sont liés aux rapports sociaux quotidiens) sur les excès et effets pervers du féminisme, ou encore le déni du genre comme catégorie d’analyse pertinente, les propos tenus sur les femmes (qu’ils soient positifs ou négatifs) constituent autant d’appropriations ordinaires des rapports sociaux de sexe et des luttes qui en sont l’objet.

Nous invitons les auteur·e·s à rendre hommage à Marielle Franco, afroféministe, lesbienne et conseillère municipale de Rio de Janeiro, assassinée le 14 mars 2018, et dont le dernier projet portait sur le funk traditionnel de Rio. Les articles proposés devront être inédits.

Ce colloque international se donne pour objectif de s’intéresser spécifiquement à l’année 1968 et à ses effets, en embrassant largement l’aire caribéenne ainsi que nord, méso et sud-Américaine. Les organisateur-trice-s entendent favoriser les approches pluridisciplinaires et mettre en lien les aires géo-culturelles, de façon à insister sur les transversalités, les échanges, les transferts culturels et politiques ainsi que les parallélismes dont l’année 1968 est porteuse. Nous proposons de décliner l’année 1968 à l’aune de plusieurs prismes, lectures et présentations issus des champs d’investigations suivants : littérature, arts (arts visuels, cinéma, musique), archives et manuscrits, histoire, sciences politiques et sociologie. Le colloque est largement ouvert aux approches transdisciplinaires « informatisées » dans une perspective dite des « humanités numériques ».

Nous nous limiterons ici aux espaces de la francophonie, qui offrent un vaste champ d’études cohérent, mais cela n’empêchera pas – elle sera bien au contraire encouragée – une mise en perspective grâce à l’étude succincte d’autres aires géographiques et civilisationnelles.

City / Cité: the transatlantic dialogue
France / US and the future of urban democracy?
À l’heure où les ondes de choc du Brexit et des élections américaines se prolongent sur cette rive de l’Atlantique dans un contexte de crise politique mondiale, City / Cité rassemble des chercheurs, des élus, des urbanistes, des militants associatifs, des artistes et des journalistes dans un dialogue transatlantique sur le passé, le présent et l’avenir de la démocratie urbaine. Après le lancement de City / Cité à Chicago en 2015 et avant la prochaine étape qui aura lieu à Detroit en 2017, l’événement parisien se tourne vers la question des « quartiers ». Les deux journées de rencontres au Centquatre-Paris proposent un espace d’échange et de réflexion sur les moyens de favoriser l’inclusion sociale et la participation politique dans les quartiers et d’identifier les bonnes pratiques pour la justice sociale.

The Power of non-powers and perspectives on the economic, social and political aspects of European Security Strategy in the early Cold War
What are the historical roots of views of European defense and Europe's role in Western defence? How did the early European Integration movement perceive American involvement in the development of a common security strategy? This conference will investigate these and other related questions by re-examining the early cold war US/European relationship and the role that early Cold War period developments played in the European Integration Movement. In so doing, this conference will also showcase findings which can contribute to the unification of Cold War and European Integration historiographies.
