The Role of Women in Work and Society

French historians are concerned by women’s history since thirty years, but studies are manly dealing with the Occident. For the ancient Near East, there is now a great deal of limited studies on women and gender history, but few syntheses. Furthermore, economic history is well represented in Assyriology, thanks to the good preservation of dozen of thousands of clay tablets recording administrative operations, contracts and acts dealing with family law. Despite these voluminous sources, the topic of work has not been much addressed. The thirty participants of this conference will examine the various economic occupations involving women, in a gender perspective, over the three millennia of Near Eastern history.

Law, economy and society

Compte tenu des évènements récents, qui ont secoué et continuent de secouer certains pays arabes, il a paru nécessaire de s’intéresser à l’évolution (passée et future, à court terme, mais aussi à long terme) de certains des aspects du statut et de la condition des femmes du Maghreb, du Machrek et de la péninsule Arabique. Ce colloque permettra d’entendre des spécialistes et des professionnels d’horizons et d’origines divers, venus des deux « rives » de la Méditerranée, toutes et tous spécialistes dans leurs champs de réflexion ou d’action respectifs (droit, science politique, économie, sociologie, culture,…).

Gender Transformations in the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa

La récente attribution du prix Nobel de la paix à une jeune femme yéménite est un signe parmi tant d'autres des profonds changements sociaux, des nouvelles mobilités spatiales et sociales en cours, non seulement au Yémen, mais dans l'ensemble de la péninsule Arabique. Dans ce colloque, organisé par le CEFAS en coordination avec plusieurs institutions de recherches françaises et internationales, ils seront abordés à travers la notion de genre, comprise avant tout dans une acception relationnelle et interactionniste. Nous avons donc sollicité des études portant sur les politiques publiques, la professionnalisation, les marchés du travail et les mobilités, le care, les enjeux moraux, l'intimité et les transformations des subjectivités, non seulement concernant les femmes, mais également les hommes et les masculinités. Ce sera l'occasion de mener une réflexion théorique sur les présupposés, les pratiques et les concepts employés quand on aborde la question du genre, particulièrement dans cette région.
