  Theological Foundations of Modern Constitutional Theory: 16th-17th Centuries

  Fondements théologiques de la théorie constitutionnelle moderne : XVIe-XVIIe siècles

  This conference aims to assemble different studies laying bridges between modern constitutional theories and theology from the perspective of intellectual history. Though modernity of law and politics has been usually accounted in the context of Reformation, the paper-givers’ approaches to the question will not be restricted in any confessional perspective, Protestant or Catholic. For, whatever the word ‘theology’ may have connoted in the time of religious confrontations, theoretical attempts to legitimize human rights and political authority at those days can be regarded as part of the general current of philosophical investigations, in a new manner and with different foci than ever, into the concept of justice with reference to that of God.

  A European merchant respublica?

  Mobilities, exchange and identities (15th-18th century)

  L’intensification des échanges à l’échelle du Vieux Continent – et au-delà du monde – à la fin du Moyen Âge a engendré une plus grande mobilité des acteurs économiques, la multiplication des intermédiaires du négoce et leur installation, ponctuelle ou permanente, à l’étranger. Marchands, marins et banquiers se sont appuyés dans ces déplacements sur des groupes de compatriotes déjà établis à l’étranger. Ce primat apparent de l’origine géographique ne fait pas des nations marchandes ni des isolats, ni des postes avancés d’une influence étrangère : elles sont au cœur de contacts de toute nature. Tous ceux qui participent au commerce sont engagés dans des contacts multiples au-delà des frontières et constituent des intermédiaires par excellence. Dans les affaires, dans les relations interpersonnelles, dans leur pratique religieuse, ils se trouvent fréquemment en situation de négociation et de compromis, entre patrie d’origine et patrie d’accueil.
