  Excess? Images of body, health, morality and emotions across the media

  A central goal of the workshop is to open up an international exchange and to connect perspectives from the history of science, the history of emotions, the history of the body and media history in order to shed new light on a history of health as a cultural history. The event is part of the research project “The Healthy Self as Body Capital: Individuals, Market-Based Societies, and Body Politics in Visual Twentieth Century Europe” funded by the European Research Council under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (Advanced Grant agreement No 694817) led by Christian Bonah (University of Strasbourg) and Anja Laukötter (Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Berlin).

  Die Invaliden des Ersten Weltkriegs auf dem Bildschirm – Frankreich, Deutschland, Russland

  Masterclass

  Unter den Opfern des Ersten Weltkriegs sind es die Kriegsversehrten, die die öffentliche Meinung am stärksten beeinflusst haben. In Frankreich, aber auch in Deutschland und Russland, haben die „gueules cassées“, die an shell shock leidenden Soldaten und diejenigen, die Gliedmaßen im Krieg verloren haben, die Zivilgesellschaft mobilisiert, Künstler inspiriert … – und oft waren sie auch Antrieb zur Gründung von Kriegsveteranenverbänden. Die Militärmedizin hat in den Jahren 1914 bis 1918 enorme Fortschritte geleistet. Die Körper dieser jungen Menschen, die in bester Gesundheit an die Front gingen, haben der Medizin ein immenses Experimentierfeld geboten. In der bereits uralten Tradition des Gesundheits- und Medizinfilms wurden die körperlichen wie psychischen Verletzungen von den Kameras eingefangen, die Erfindungen und Entdeckungen der Wissenschaft wurden auf die Leinwände unzähliger Länder projiziert. Der Kampf gegen den Feind auf dem Feld der Medizin – Krankheit und Tod – ist Gegenstand einer genauso intensiven Filmpropaganda, wie der Kampf auf den Schlachtfeldern. Wie filmt man in Frankreich, Deutschland und Russland die Belastungsprobe, der der mechanisierte Krieg die Körper und die Geister aussetzt?

  Emotional Bodies

  A Workshop on the historical Performativity of Emotions

  The idea that the body is the site in which emotions are expressed is an old one in Western Culture. However, shall we alternatively consider emotions as historical agents that have given meaning to systems of symbolic relations which we understand here as “bodies”? This three-day workshop seeks to explore the conception of emotions as cultural practices that do things and have the power of creating emotional bodies throughout history. With this aim in mind, we will examine the production of physical, social, political, artistic and literary bodies in connection with the changing meaning of social norms, cultural codes and institutions, and especially as the result of the work of emotions.

  Le corps des émotions

  À propos de la performativité des émotions dans l’histoire

  En prenant pour point de départ la métaphore du corps, ce colloque veut faire émerger de nouvelles possibilités d’étude de la performativité historique des émotions, comprises comme des agents donnant du sens aux corps, que ceux-ci soient physiques, sociaux, politiques, artistiques ou littéraires. Ainsi, l’expression « corps émotionnel » peut être considérée comme une catégorie analytique permettant de comprendre comment différentes conceptions historiques des émotions, ainsi que les pratiques et les objets qui leur sont associés, ont produit des systèmes de relations physiques et symboliques qui peuvent être compris comme des corps, dans une optique multidisciplinaire.
