Open Theology invites submissions for the topical issue “The Bible and Migration”, prepared in collaboration with the conference The Bible on the Move: Toward a Biblical Theology of Migration, held at Fuller Theological Seminary in January 2020. This special issue asks how cutting-edge biblical scholarship should inform conversation about and action relating to migration in the twenty-first century, bridging the gap between biblical studies, theology, and activism. Articles should examine how the biblical texts reflect diverse migrant experiences, as well as ways in which these texts reflect theologically on migration and appropriate responses to it among migrants and host communities. Articles may also critically interrogate the Bible’s use in arguments over migration and migrants’ reception by host communities.

Disguise, dressing-up and transformations
Alors que notre travail en tant que chercheur·se·s est de classer, il s’agira ici d’étudier des cas de l’entre-deux au Moyen Âge : on se penchera sur la porosité entre différents groupes établis et les transformations, extérieures et intérieures, que cela implique. Il pourra s'agir de la transition d'une espèce à l'autre, d'un genre à l'autre, d'une espèce ou encore d'une ethnie à l'autre. Cette transformation de l'extérieur pourra notamment (mais pas seulement) passer par le déguisement ; quand la transformation est un passage d'un genre à l'autre, on parle souvent de « travestissement ». On prendra garde à ne pas considérer les trois termes « déguisements, « travestissements », « transformations » comme des équivalents : loin de les envisager comme synonymes, nous invitons à penser la relation extérieur/intérieur d'un·e individu·e de manière dynamique. Car modifier son aspect extérieur peut aussi permettre de révéler son intériorité réelle au monde, d'attester d'une transformation intime, ou d'accompagner cette transformation identitaire.

Now that the scientific and political issues of our society belong to a world-system (Wallerstein, Arrighi, Amin), translation plays more than ever a central role in the circulation of texts and ideas. Translating is a cognitive and social activity that informs the way we relate to reality and to others. It implies a particular worldview and has cognitive, social, ethical and political effects. From this perspective, thinking and practicing translation as a neutral operation is a form of denial of its ethical and political significance. A model of translation as a simple transfer of meaning from one text to another is not acceptable given the complexity of the factors and actors involved. Hence the need to rethink translation in the light of contemporary issues.

Dispossession: Agency, ecology and theatrical reality

In Ursula Le Guin’s 1974 novel The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia, children are educated to engage only with what interests others; the opposite is considered self-indulgence, condemned as “egoizing”. The disowning of any idea of the self is considered a virtue, as is the ability to speak the language of others. Le Guin’s novel fictionalises a common narrative in processes of 20th and early 21st century art: the withdrawal of the self. In relation to concurrent processes that reclaim agency for those who are already dispossessed, that call for the legitimisation of systematically marginalised voices, is the withdrawal of the self merely a privilege? How might wilful dispossession and agency be related through difference, as interconnected transitions of power, in such a way that reveals theatricality in the construction of reality?

Philosophy and dance in Africa and among its diasporas today
Corpus Africana festival
From the 27th of October until the 10th of November 2018 the university consortium Erasmus Mundus Europhilosophie is organising, under the title “Corpus Africana; Current philosophies and Dances in Africa and its Diasporas”, an important international meeting, aiming to bring to the heart of arts and humanities university research in Europe the knowledge and the study of “Africana Philosophy”, of choreographic knowledge that is of African or contemporary African lineage in nature. The meeting will take place at the University of Toulouse Jean Jaurès as part of the research seminar “Thinking Decolonisation”, in collaboration with the James Carlès Centre of Choreography’s Festival of Dance and the Black Continents.

In On Being Included, Sara Ahmed argues that institutional commitments to diversity may be considered “non-performatives”: they do not bring about what they name. Institutions run diversity workshops and committees, outreach programmes and ‘participatory’ or ‘inclusive’ agendas, but where does the gesture stop, and where does it begin? How may we understand the choreography and the dramaturgy of institutional outreaching? How can we begin to detour this language so as to rethink the role of the university – and of artistic practice – in public life today? Does the university have a role to play in public life, and what might that be? Does this equate with ‘outreach’? What is the relationship between artistic practice and what may be termed ‘creative research’?

Dialectics of Dread and Refuge

In A Grammar of the Multitude, Paolo Virno discriminates between the Kantian view of the dialectic of dread and refuge, which is based on a distinction between particular danger and absolute danger (also articulated by Heidegger through the distinction between fear and anguish) and the collapse of this distinction in the post-Fordist world, in which "the dividing line between fear and anguish, between relative dread and absolute dread, is precisely what has failed." (Virno 2004, 32) If post-Fordist institutions rely on a culture of pervasive dread – manifest as fear and anxiety – how do we resist this nearly intangible culture today? Arguably, we are moving beyond the sort of entrenched paralysis Virno speaks of, towards a new sort of political breakthrough, a manner of imagining life not determined by institutional cultures of fear and anxiety. Yet much thinking needs still to be done around the ways in which we engage in concerted resistance: do we fight within institutional walls – and if so, how do we resist systems of perpetual visibilisation – the gaze of securitization that renders us so exposed? What does this fight look like? Do we exit – and if so, where to? Is there a new underground?

Difference, diversity, diffraction: confronting hegemonies and dispossessions
10th European Feminist Research Conference
The overall theme of the conference is “Difference, Diversity, Diffraction: Confronting Hegemonies and Dispossessions”, which refers to a topic central to Gender Studies: the social construction of difference and inequality on the one hand, and the recognition of marginalised experiences and subject positions on the other. In the face of growing right-wing populist movements, anti-feminist and anti-queer backlash, forced migration, austerity and climate change, these concerns take on renewed relevance. The subtitle “Confronting Hegemonies and Dispossessions” is a call to reflect on, challenge and defy the hierarchies, subjugations and deprivations that are linked to structural differentiations and to find affirmative ways of dealing with difference , diversity and diffraction. The conference is committed to promoting a feminist anti-racist accessible space for all genders.

Human rights and the culture of peace
La promotion des valeurs universelles des droits de l’Homme et de la culture de la paix constitue aujourd’hui une priorité pour les différents systèmes éducatifs dans le monde. C’est à cette évidence que nous renvoient les recommandations de l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’éducation, la culture et la science, dont particulièrement La Recommandation sur l'éducation pour la compréhension, la coopération et la paix internationales et l'éducation relative aux droits de l'homme et aux libertés fondamentales (1974) et Le Cadre d’action intégré concernant l’éducation pour la paix, les droits de l’homme et la démocratie (1995). Dans le droit fil de ces recommandations internationales, la Chaire Unesco Emir Abdelkader pour les Droits de l’Homme et la Culture de Paix de l’Université d’Alger I a élaboré, pour l’année universitaire 2017-2018, un cycle de conférences autour de différents thèmes relatifs aux droits humains et qui se dérouleront au siège de la Commission nationale algérienne pour l’Unesco.

The production of subjectivity under neo-liberal governance
Neoliberal governance and its structures, and dispositifs, are at the core of contemporary debates in the human sciences. David Harvey (2006) considers neoliberalism a theory that places individual freedom as the final goal of all civilisations. Private property rights, free markets and liberal democracy are the means through which individual freedom is best protected and society flourishes, according to neo-liberal views. The primary role of the state is to enforce property rights, while market forces govern the economy. Neo-liberal ideas have shaped global and national policy for over three decades, introducing the primacy of private property and market rationality in all range of public life from education to healthcare, from land governance to environmental protection. Workers' rights in the global North as well as in the South are devalued in favour of individual responsibility.

Politicising, depoliticising and repoliticising
Quel sens donner à l’affirmation selon laquelle « tout est politique » ? D’un côté, à chaque point précis où il y a domination, asymétrie de pouvoir, il y a conflit possible et émancipation possible, donc il y a de la politique. De l’autre, celle-ci n’existerait qu’en puissance, en chaque lieu où l’ordre social serait absolument naturalisé, où son arbitraire et sa contingence seraient intégralement recouverts. Il existe donc deux cas-limites, celui ou en un sens rien n’est politique, et celui de la politisation « totale » : deux polarités qui nous permettent de poser le problème différemment. Car si tout n’est pas toujours considéré comme politique, c’est-à-dire effectivement politisé, tout n’est-il pas, par contre, politisable (l’organisation du travail dans les luttes ouvrières, le privé dans les mouvements féministes, la technique dans les mouvements écologistes, les migrations dans les luttes postcoloniales…) ?

Appel à contribution pour un ouvrage
Après la tenue de deux journées d’études sur « La diversité religieuse. Approche pluridisciplinaire » tenues à l’université du Havre en septembre 2013 et septembre 2014, la publication d’un ouvrage sur ce thème est retenue. À cette fin, nous sollicitons la contribution de nouveaux chercheurs sur le thème, avec un intérêt particulier pour des propositions en anthropologie, philosophie, littérature, gestion et économie.

Most often, descriptive studies about spatial mobility rest on evaluative assumptions. For instance, the recent “mobility turn” in social theory frequently claims that mobility is underlying every social practice, but also that is vital. Likewise, studies about how poverty, disability, gender and citizenship affect people’s mobility implicitly assume that unequal mobility is unjust and should be redressed. So, what is mobility and what makes it so vital and important? This conference’s aim is twofold: to make explicit the value judgments underlying descriptive studies about people’s mobility and to further clarify the concept of mobility.

Les propositions pourront porter aussi bien sur le monde arabo-musulman classique que sur le contemporain. Elles trouveront leur champ d’application dans la littérature arabe, aussi bien francophone qu’arabophone, dans les écrits historiques aussi bien que philosophiques, dans les arts visuels (cinéma, vidéo, etc.) aussi bien dans les arts plastiques ou spectaculaires.

Universalism in a multicultural world
L'UNESCO, le ministère de l’Éducation, des sciences et des technologies de la République de Corée, et la ville de Busan ont le plaisir de vous annoncer le premier Forum mondial sur les Humanités, qui aura lieu du 24 au 26 novembre 2011 à Busan (Corée). Huitième colloque de Poexil
Le groupe « Poexil » sollicite des propositions de communications pour son huitième colloque annuel qui se tiendra à Montréal (Canada) les 20, 21 et 22 novembre 2008, sur le thème : « Les objets de l'exil ». L’expérience exilique connaît ses stratégies de réconfort ou de protection et parmi elles, le choix de garder un objet provenant du pays quitté et de l’investir de toute la charge nostalgique dont le sujet se soulage ainsi quelque peu. Le présent colloque entend interroger les processus par lesquels de tels objets qui sont exilés de leur cadre d’origine en viennent à incarner l’expérience même de l’exil. La sémiotique et l’herméneutique qui président à leur nouveau statut pourront être librement abordées par le biais de différentes perspectives disciplinaires.
