Intituler les œuvres d'art, les biens culturels et les contenus médiatiques
L’objectif du colloque n’est pas tant de renseigner telle pratique, tel corpus ou tel objet, mais d’interroger le titre des objets artistiques, culturels et médiatiques en tant que catégorie de pensée (et conséquemment d’usage), que cette catégorie soit construite et mobilisée par les acteurs, les publics ou les chercheuses et les chercheurs des champs concernés. Le but est ainsi moins d’investiguer les titres et les intitulations per se que leurs principes et modes d’existence, leurs fonctions et raisons d’être, leurs processus tout autant que leurs réifications. À quoi servent les titres, d’où viennent-ils, comment évoluent-ils, que signifient-ils, comment signifient-ils, peut-on s’en passer, quels sont les rapports d’influence réciproques qu’ils entretiennent avec les objets qu’ils chapeautent ?

Sacré ou profane, lu ou appris par cœur, transformé en amulette ou trônant dans la vitrine d’une librairie et exhibant un prix qui le rend parfois inaccessible au public auquel il est destiné, le livre possède-t-il et exerce-t-il encore un pouvoir sur nos vies et dans notre imaginaire ? Par quels biais cet objet qui ne semble exister que pour permettre la circulation des idées ou la relation spirituelle peut-il mettre en avant sa propre matérialité ? Cette matérialité n’est-elle pas le support autant des cultes voués au livre que des agressions et des détournements dont il peut faire l’objet ? Quels rapports entretenons-nous avec le support papier à l’heure de la digitalisation prétendument universelle ?

The politics and geopolitics of translation
The multilingual circulation of knowledge and transnational histories of geography
In the last fifty years, the field of the history of geography has moved from an approach dominated by National Schools to an attention to the circulation of knowledge in its multiple scales. The history of science and of geography have in the last decades incorporated concepts such as transit, networks, mobilities, the transnational, circulation, centre of calculation, spaces of knowledge, geographies of science, spatial mobility of knowledge, geographies of reading and geographies of the book. More recently, a turn has emerged towards considering the dynamics and necessities of decolonizing the history of geography. This work is turning the field of the history of geography into one of the most dynamic areas of the discipline. Yet we suggest that questions of language and translation have remained under-determined in this new field. Translation and writing have not received the same attention as, for instance, departmental histories, sites of museums, laboratories, botanic gardens, and scientific societies, for example. We suggest, therefore, that new perspectives opened up by translation studies can open new windows on the history of geography.

Pratiques et enjeux contemporains
La critique fait aujourd’hui l’objet de nombreuses études, colloques et publications qui prennent pour objet ce discours particulier et qui participent d’un renouvellement de l’histoire de l’art. On s’intéresse également à ces espaces traditionnels de diffusion que sont les revues. En France, les Archives de la critique d’art sont un acteur important du développement de ce champ de recherche. On pourrait faire deux hypothèses pour expliquer cet intérêt en regard de la situation contemporaine de la critique. Tout d’abord, il serait inversement proportionnel à son affaiblissement. Ne serions-nous pas passés du geste critique à celui de la communication qui rend cette écriture totalement accessoire ?

Borders and insularity in the Caribbean: what spaces for Caribbean literatures?
Le colloque annuel de l’association jeunes chercheur·ses « Caracol – Observatoire des littératures caribéennes », qui réunit depuis 2018 les jeunes chercheurs et chercheuses qui s’intéressent aux littératures de la Caraïbe, portera en 2020 sur les notions de frontière et d’insularité dans la Caraïbe. La notion de frontière occupe une place centrale dans les œuvres littéraires et artistiques de la Caraïbe. Incontournable pour des raisons historiques, elle a perdu de sa rigidité au cours du XXe siècle : en envisageant dans leurs œuvres la frontière tantôt comme une limite à transgresser ou à dépasser, tantôt comme un espace interstitiel, les artistes en ont fait un lieu fécond pour caractériser la zone caribéenne. La Caraïbe est une région au dessin complexe, tracé de manière heurtée durant les siècles qui se sont écoulés depuis la conquête européenne.

"Thinking the library": Belgian writers' and artists' libraries (19th-21st centuries)
Theme issue of the Textyles journal
Pour un de ses prochains numéros, Textyles, revue des lettres belges de langue française, abordera les bibliothèques d’écrivains et d’artistes (plasticiens, architectes, musiciens) belges, du XIXe siècle à nos jours. Comparé aux bibliothèques d’écrivains et d’artistes français qui ont déjà mené à divers projets de recherche, le champ des bibliothèques belges n’a été encore que peu investigué. Pourtant, la conservation de bibliothèques d’écrivains et d’artistes belges dans diverses institutions (Ghelderode à l’université libre de Bruxelles, Bauchau à l’université Catholique de Louvain, Lemonnier au Musée Camille Lemonnier, etc.) et la publication de quelques inventaires révèlent un terrain de recherche prometteur. Afin d’engager le mouvement, ce numéro propose de penser la bibliothèque selon une perspective à la fois méthodologique, théorique et pratique, à la croisée des arts et de la littérature.

Cet appel à communication est dédié à une journée d'étude organisée à l'université d'Orléans le 29 mai 2019, et portant sur les approches matérialistes de la littérature. La journée se propose d'être un moment de réflexion méthodologiques, sur les différents cadres théoriques et conceptuels qui permettent de considérer la littérature, non comme un objet anhistorique fait de relations d'intertextualité, mais comme un phénomène social, inséré dans des rapports économiques, historiques, voire matériels.

Text as object in the Middle Ages
The International Medieval Congress (IMC) is the largest medieval studies conference in the world. In line with the Special Thematic Strand in 2019 “Materialities” and the recent creation of the strand “Manuscript studies”, we organize sessions on “Text as object in the Middle Ages”. Texts, indeed, are at the same time an idea and a form. The latter is the result of a combination of inherited social uses and specific intentions by the various actors involved in transmitting the text as idea. This process begins with the authors, continues to the craftsmen (parchment and paper makers, copyists and chancery clerks, painters and illuminators, sculptors and weavers, booksellers…) and then on to possessors, readers, archives and libraries. All textual artefacts are concerned: manuscripts, charters, inscriptions, tapestries, seals, coins, etc.

First Saint-Omer international colloquium
The first Saint-Omer international colloquium is co-organized by the Centre de Recherche et d’Études Histoire et Sociétés (EA 4027 CREHS - Université d’Artois), and the Cultural Services of St Omer country’s Urban district (CAPSO). It is part of the pluri-disciplinary research programme The Renaissance in the Northern Provinces, coordinated since 2015 by Pr. Charles Giry-Deloison and Dr. Laurence Baudoux, and is in the continuity of the conferences already held at the University of Artois. The Saint-Omer colloquium aims to address all expressions of the Renaissance in the field of Humanities (philosophy, literature, arts), in the former Southern Netherlands in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It will focus in particular on the exchanges, encounters and bonds between the main actors of this cultural revival.

Smuggling American literature into France (1917-1967)
Cette journée d'études interdisciplinaire est consacrée à la manière dont la littérature américaine entre dans le champ de la culture en France, au cours d'une période définie par deux moments-clé de la relation franco-américaine : l'engagement des États-Unis dans la première guerre mondiale (1917) et le retrait des forces de l'OTAN du territoire français (1967). Il s'agira, d'une part, d'identifier les intermédiaires qui ont permis la circulation de la littérature américaine en France au cours de cette période ; d'autre part, d'éclairer la diversité de leurs pratiques, ainsi que les formes de capitalisation, sélection, distorsion, hybridation, censure, rejet ou subversion qui les accompagnent. On souhaiterait également faire apparaître les relations sociales, culturelles, économiques ou politiques que ces passeurs mettent en jeu ainsi que les perceptions et les images de la littérature américaine qu'ils ont construites pour le public français.

Methodologies, objectives, perspectives
In the last four decades, scholars have begun to go beyond the traditional perspective of linguistic and literary studies, and to consider the translations as cultural practices and the result of various processes of cultural and intellectual “negotiation” between two different contexts. In recent years also historians have progressively started to take a close interest in translations as sources to investigate the ways in which knowledge and ideas were constructed, disseminated, re-elaborated and assimilated in new cultural, social and political contexts. The aims of this international conference is to encourage an interdisciplinary dialogue on these problems, bringing together scholars, graduate students and early career researchers from Translation Studies, History, History of Book, History of Science, Literary Studies and related disciplines who are interested in discussing methodologies, objectives and perspectives in the study of translations.

Le neuvième numéro de la revue Arborescences sera consacré à la correspondance érudite du XVIe au XVIIIe siècle. Qu’il s’agisse d’un corpus littéraire, journalistique, viatique, scientifique ou théologique, nous sollicitons des propositions d’articles originaux qui ouvrent de nouvelles pistes de réflexion sur la dynamique de la circulation des savoirs au sein des échanges épistolaires, sur l’évolution des réseaux érudits de l’Ancien Régime, sur les savoirs véhiculés et les types de discours mobilisés, ainsi que sur les stratégies éditoriales qu’implique le passage à la publication. Nous sommes particulièrement intéressés par des contributions provenant d’éditeurs de correspondances.

Is it possible, while maintaining the momentum of Pierre Nora’ studies on Sites of Memory (Les lieux de mémoire, 1984-87), or Christian Jacob’s current researches on Places of Knowledge (Lieux de savoirs, 2007-2011), to consider particular public places – museums, libraries, theatre, the list is endless – as sites dedicated to the process of thinking, as places where one thinks? To what extent, in which ways, and for what purpose might institutions and places strive for stimulating, elaborating, shaping a thinking process? What kind of institutional, architectural, or design devices would such a dedication to the thinking process involve? What professional or artistic issues, limitations, resources, would this impact?

Ce colloque ne visera pas la commémoration mais cherchera à accompagner l’élan qui anime les éditions Tarabuste. Il tentera de souligner combien l’activité éditoriale d’une « petite » maison comme Tarabuste est évidemment multiple et combien la force relationnelle qu’elle construit est décisive pour ce qui fait la littérature aujourd’hui jusque dans l’enseignement et la recherche. Ce colloque tentera, à l’image de la maison qui le mobilise, d’inventer des formes de réflexions et d’échange poursuivant un tel élan éditorial.

‘Bad Kind’: The Dark Energy of the Literary System
Bad literature is damned to oblivion. Focused mostly on valuable texts, our academic knowledge of the literary world is restricted to an extremely exclusive selection among its potential objects of research. Invariably, good taste filters literary materials in spite of its proven versatility in the course of history, and in spite of the instability not only of the canon of ‘great texts’, but also of the institutions in charge of its transmission. Consequently, texts of different sorts are discarded into darkness: failed and amateur works, venal writing, as well as literary forgeries and transgressions such as plagiarism. Bad literature includes most often pulp and popular literature (paraliterature) as well. Nevertheless, what if the rejected ‘bad taste’ was in fact similar to dark energy, which is invisible but probably predominant in the Universe?

Printing and misprinting: Typographical mistakes and publishers’ corrections (1450-1600)
This one-day symposium – opening with a keynote lecture by Anthony Grafton (Princeton) – aims to explore the notions of typos and manuscript or stop-press emendations in early modern print shops. Building on Grafton’s seminal work, scholars are invited to present new evidence on what we can learn from misprints in relation to publishers’ practices, printing and pre-publication procedures, and editorial strategies between 1450 and 1600.

Philology and the work of Guillaume Budé
Through the prism of humanist knowledge, five and a half centuries after his birth
Au cours de son existence bien remplie, Guillaume Budé (1468-1540) a conçu, publié, augmenté nombre d’œuvres dont la valeur littéraire et la portée scientifique ont profondément marqué son époque et la postérité, à l’égal de son contemporain Érasme. Or les productions de Budé sont connues de façon inégale, demeurent parfois peu étudiées, non traduites, dépourvues d’éditions modernes, malgré un regain d’intérêt qui s’est déployé tout au long du XXe siècle comme en ce début du XXIe. Le colloque « Les noces de philologie et de Guillaume Budé » a pour ambition de revenir, à la lumière des recherches les plus récentes, sur les différentes facettes d’une œuvre polycentrique.
