Behind the curtain? Representations of poverty in Europe in the modern era
L’objectif de ce colloque est de rassembler des chercheurs qui ont fait de l'image du pauvre et de la pauvreté dans les arts visuels, l'histoire des représentations et la littérature un sujet d'étude en soi. Il s'agira notamment d'évaluer, à l'échelon européen, l'impact d'une production significative bien que rarement prise en compte, d’analyser son iconographie et d’en cerner le sens, d’en préciser les débouchés, les discours et leurs enjeux (comiques, sentimentaux, économiques, religieux, politiques etc.) à la lumière d’éléments contextuels précis.

Three-day international conference on the Photobook
This conference is on the social history of the photobook, whether photographer-driven, writer-driven, editor-driven, or publisher-driven. Papers will address: commitment or explicit political engagement; memory, commemoration and the writing of history; materiality (whether real or virtual), and how material form affects circulation, handling, critical responses and the social life of the photobook. Contributors will analyse these topics with respect to the growth of the market for the photobook as a commodity and an object of bibliophilic attention.

Cinquante ans après les faits, il est commun de considérer que les événements qui ont éclaté au cours de l'année 1968 ont participé d'une re-configuration de nos imaginaires politiques et sociaux. Or cet « effet 68 », si souvent décrié ou encensé, relève peut-être de la multitude des événements qu'il englobe. Ce colloque se propose de le faire dans deux perspectives au moins : d'abord, en interrogeant la mondialité du phénomène, en revenant sur des soulèvements jusque-là négligés, notamment dans l'hémisphère sud ; ensuite en tentant de le questionner par les vecteurs principaux des imaginaires sociaux que sont successivement les œuvres, les images, les archives et enfin la parole.

Male Bonds in Nineteenth-Century Art
The conference will probe, challenge and expand upon the academic narrative of male homosociality through the lens of art history. It aims to establish an overview of a variety of male bonds that underpinned nineteenth-century art, and to consider the theoretical and methodological implications of the study thereof. In so doing, it seeks to build a bridge between traditional art-historical scholarship and the fields of gender and gay and lesbian studies: an interdisciplinary exchange of which the full potential for scholarship on the nineteenth century remains to be exploited.

The international and interdisciplinary symposium "Dance and Nations: identities, alterities, boundaries" is a scientific meeting organized within the framework of the of the HdD (Hermeneutics of Dance research program, directed by Arianna Fabbricatore),. Il brings together a team of scholars to question how theatrical dance evolves in the European social and cultural space. Its purpose is to discuss the different aspects related to the circulation of dance in Europe and to open up research on the semiotic, political and social issues of dance as a sign, expression or representation of the permeable bounderies between cultural identities.

Comparative analyses of nineteenth-century sketches
A new wave of scholarship has emerged in recent years, which examines nineteenth-century sketches (sometimes referred to as “panoramic literature”) from a transnational perspective. The present international conference seeks to continue this comparative reflection by placing the spotlight on the comparative analysis of texts and images of specific types and by tracing how these representations vary across sketches from different places, media and editorial contexts.

Social constraints vs. self-assertion
À l'occasion du 150e anniversaire de la collection de moulages de sceaux des Archives générales du Royaume (AGR, Belgique), celles-ci, en partenariat avec le centre de recherche « Pratiques médiévales de l’écrit » de l'université de Namur, organisent un colloque dédié aux sources sigillaires médiévales des Pays-Bas méridionaux, qui se tiendra à Bruxelles et Namur les 27 et 28 novembre 2014. La première journée portera sur des questions de constitution et de valorisation de corpus sigillaires ; une table ronde sera consacrée aux collections de moulages et à leur devenir au XXIe siècle. La seconde journée verra la présentation de recherches fondées sur des ensembles de sceaux en lien avec l'espace « belge » au sens large, tous types de sigillants confondus ; des thèmes tels que la diffusion de la pratique sigillaire, le poids des normes et la place de l'innovation seront abordés.

A Workshop on the historical Performativity of Emotions
The idea that the body is the site in which emotions are expressed is an old one in Western Culture. However, shall we alternatively consider emotions as historical agents that have given meaning to systems of symbolic relations which we understand here as “bodies”? This three-day workshop seeks to explore the conception of emotions as cultural practices that do things and have the power of creating emotional bodies throughout history. With this aim in mind, we will examine the production of physical, social, political, artistic and literary bodies in connection with the changing meaning of social norms, cultural codes and institutions, and especially as the result of the work of emotions.

La peau est un objet paradoxal du cinéma : elle est à la fois ce qu’on ne peut éviter de filmer dès qu’on prend l’humain pour sujet (il faut faire avec) et ce qui tend à disparaître sous l’attention accordée aux différentes parties du corps dont elle forme l’enveloppe. Dans ces conditions, comment la peau fait-elle réellement surface au cinéma ? Quand et comment devient-elle objet de trouble ? Même lorsqu’elle n’occupe pas spectaculairement le devant de la scène, la peau reste un paramètre de création essentiel. Les pratiques de l’étalonnage, où le rendu de la chair prime généralement sur le rendu des autres éléments du décor ou des costumes, ne peuvent que renforcer le sentiment que l’incarnation, au sens très littéral où des êtres de chair transmués en images évoluent devant nous, est une caractéristique fondamentale de l’art cinématographique. Comment le cinéma se saisit-il des potentialités plastiques et tactiles de la peau ? Quelle est l’incidence des innovations technologiques sur la figuration de la surface du corps ? Ce sont quelques-unes des questions auxquelles ce colloque aura à cœur de se confronter.

Revolution and cinema: the Portuguese example
In honour of the fortieth anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, this three-day international conference seeks to interrogate the cinematic representation of the political event from 1974 to today. Paul Ricœur states that “rethinking is a form that cancels temporal distance.” To rethink the revolution would then entail making the revolution present, making it come alive, bringing the past and the present together, questioning the effects of the passing of time on the images, the narratives and on cinema itself as an historical device. Today’s acute economic and political crisis in Portugal shakes the very foundations of April’s democracy, and this legacy could perhaps use the present as the inaugural strength of another history to come. Taking the cinema of revolution as a nodal point and as a major historical shift, which links – other than referential and chronological ones –, unify the pre- and post-revolutionary Portuguese cinemas? In other words, how can this idea of “revolution” remain, irrigate and illuminate Portuguese cinema?

Le istituzioni e i cittadini, l’Italia e l’Europa
La storia dell’Italia democratica evidenzia con sempre maggiori riscontri documentari il ruolo assunto dai Presidenti nelle vicende della Repubblica e dell’Italia repubblicana. Il tema è stato finalmente “scoperto” anche dagli studi storici ed esso pone al centro della riflessione le trasformazioni culturali e politiche dei costumi repubblicani nel secondo dopoguerra. L’orizzonte della ricerca che si prospetta è ampio, contemplando non solo le istituzioni della Repubblica e gli equilibri tra i suoi poteri, ma anche percorsi tra i più innovativi di una effettiva storia culturale della politica: l’uso dei rituali civili e dei simboli nella costruzione dell’identità nazionale, così come le relazioni tra il Capo dello Stato, i cittadini e l’opinione pubblica.

The Black Body in the West
The city of Paris, as an international cultural hub and a Western metropolis wielding considerable influence over the notions of art and modernity, was deemed the perfect setting for Black Portraiture[s]: The Black Body in the West, the fifth in a series of conferences that have been hosted by Harvard University and NYU since 2004. Black Portraiture[s] aims to explore the various means of manufacturing and promoting self-representation, as well as the notion of exchange, from the 19th century to the present day in fashion, film, art, and archives. How are these - positive and negative - images displayed, and how do they define, replicate, and transform representations of the Black body? How and why did the black body become a tradable commodity in the global marketplace and what gives it its legitimacy? And just as importantly, what are the responses given and their implications? Can the representation of the Black body be truly liberating both for those who are identified with its image and for its beholders? Could a deracialisation of the black body take place, thus promoting cultural reunification and fostering reappropriation as well as various forms of expression beyond the limits of race? The Black body, as imagined by the West, has always been fertile ground for observation and debate. Yet the representation and depiction of Black people has often been predicated upon prevailing attitudes on race and sexuality. The conference draws on the ideas and works of both leading and emerging writers, photographers, scholars, artists, curators and filmmakers of our time, and will address the broader issue of Africa in the popular imagination. It is also significant that this project has benefitted from the widest possible collaboration. -

Le 30 juin 2012, en même temps que le réseau Transpac, s’arrêtera le trafic Minitel. Ce colloque reviendra sur les évolutions, continuités, ruptures entraînées par la pénétration rapide et massive dans le grand public de ce système interactif. Il s'agira de penser son appropriation, ses enjeux et les usages de cette technologie par ses différents acteurs : acteurs des télécommunications, monde professionnel, éditeurs de services, grand public... Si la genèse du Minitel et les premiers usages sont bien connus, il est nécessaire de replacer cette technologie de l’information et de la communication dans le temps long de l’histoire des médias et de l’innovation, des sciences de l’information et de la communication, de l’histoire des entreprises, etc. -

Crossed and interdisciplinary perspectives
La table ronde organisée au CESCM (CNRS-Université de Poitiers) propose une première approche résolument interdisciplinaire de l'étude des cinq sens dans la culture chrétienne médiévale. Elle réunit des spécialistes internationalement reconnus dans leur domaine respectif et pour la connaissance des cinq sens. Des domaines aussi variés que l'art, la liturgie, la théologie, la littérature, l'héraldique, la poésie, entre autres, seront traités pour une approche diversifiée des cinq sens. Le cadre chronologique et géographique sera aussi large que possible avec des conférences sur l'Occident, le monde byzantin et le monde musulman. -

Images, mémoires et déplacements
A l’initiative d’Isabelle Marinone, Historienne du Cinéma, l’Institut d’Etudes Avancées du Collegium de Lyon - nouveau pôle de recherche en Sciences Humaines - organise son premier colloque international au sein de l’ENS-LSH. Entrant dans l’un des axes thématiques dégagés par l’IEA, « Culture, patrimoine et création », cet événement scientifique permettra de valoriser la recherche dans le domaine cinématographique. Pour ce faire, le Collegium de Lyon s’est tourné vers les centres de recherche français, à savoir l’Institut de Recherche sur le Cinéma et l’Audiovisuel (IRCAV) de l’université Paris 3, et le Centre d’Etudes et de Recherches en Histoire et Esthétique du Cinéma (CERHEC-composante de l’EA HICSA) de l’université Paris 1. -

Approches textuelles et iconographiques
Dès qu’un personnage historique devient source de création littéraire, il tend à se transformer en figure « mythique » (à entendre ici au sens d’un mythe littéraire). Saladin, Baybars, Gengis Khan, par exemple, ont donné naissance à d’innombrables récits fabuleux devenus supports de croyance, interférant parfois rétroactivement dans les sources historiques. Les contacts entre Croisés, Mongols et Musulmans ont favorisé, de part et d’autre, l’élaboration d’images types et le développement des valeurs et des représentations qui s’y rattachent, en particulier pour les souverains. -

La photographie et le cinéma amateurs sont dorénavant reconnus comme une part importante du patrimoine culturel du XXe siècle : des archives en France et à l'étranger collectent, conservent et valorisent ces images produites hors des circuits professionnels. Au cours de deux journées de colloque des chercheurs et des conservateurs montreront, à partir de leurs expériences respectives, comment ces images ou ces objets sont en train de modifier nos regards - valorisation de l'intime et du privé - mais aussi nos savoirs - représentations nouvelles des événements historiques et sociaux. -
