The evolution of the editorial policies and techniques in missionary activity (19th-21st centuries)
Les organisations missionnaires chrétiennes ont régulièrement développé des politiques éditoriales pour chercher des soutiens, promouvoir leur action et en assurer la pérennité. Elles ont très tôt développé toute une littérature illustrée de propagande bientôt complétée par une production savante. Récemment, elles sont également entrées dans la révolution audio-visuelle et aujourd’hui dans la révolution numérique. Ce colloque propose d’ouvrir plusieurs pistes de réflexion permettant de rechercher des corrélations entre ces politiques et les cultures avec lesquelles la mission est entrée en contact, les langues qu’elle a empruntées successivement ou simultanément, et les techniques de communications dont la mission s’est servie ou se sert encore.

Producing and publishing theology in the Catholic world (from the Restorations to Vatican II)
L’histoire de la théologie contemporaine commence à voir émerger un renouvellement d’approches. À côté de l’analyse d’un objet particulier dans le discours théologique, d’autres recherches explorent le statut de la théologie et de son énonciation, ainsi que le statut des théologiens, dans une démarche d’histoire sociale et culturelle des savoirs. Ces études ont montré à quel point l’histoire de la théologie demeure trop dépendante du « grand récit » construit par les théologiens eux-mêmes, lequel s’impose aux historiens du religieux. Ce colloque entend poursuivre dans ce sens et cherche à rassembler des historiens travaillant sur la production et la publication des savoirs théologiques, du temps des restaurations européennes à la période du Concile Vatican II, période décisive pour la reconfiguration de la place des théologiens dans le monde des savoirs et des savants, ainsi que dans les églises.

Le Pôle de conservation des archives des associations de jeunesse et d'éducation populaire (PAJEP) organise une journée d’étude consacrée à l’histoire des mouvements d’Action catholique spécialisée qui s’adressent aux adolescents et aux jeunes hommes et femmes (Jeunesse étudiante chrétienne, Jeunesse indépendante chrétienne, Jeunesse maritime chrétienne, Jeunesse ouvrière chrétienne, Mouvement rural de la jeunesse chrétienne). Cette manifestation, qui porte sur la période 1965-1979, est le prolongement d’une première journée d’étude, traitant du même sujet, pour la période antérieure (1945-1965). Elle se tiendra à Paris à l’automne 2019.

The Agreements of the Holy See with States (19th-21st Centuries)
Models and Transformations, from Confessional States to Religious Freedom
This conference will explore the international legal agreements signed between the Holy See and individual states, which often but not always took the form of concordats and similar conventions. Its central focus will be to examine these conventions in light of diplomatic practices, as well as in relation to the political and religious dynamics of the nineteenth through the twenty-first centuries, notably the principles and requirements that comprised modernity. This entails assessing the historical evolution of the typology, method, content, scope, and spaces concerned.

V International Conference on Mythcriticism
The V International Conference on Mythcriticism “Myth and Audiovisual Creation” will analyze the impact of myth in audiovisual creation from 1900 to the present day. The Conference will be organized in four universities during two weeks.The Conference will be divided into 4 venues according to different themes: "Germanic Myths" in the University of Alcalá, "Classical Myths" in the University Autónoma, "Biblical Myths" in the University Francisco de Vitoria and "Modern Myths" in the University Complutense. Researchers can send to one of their 4 venues their abstracts. They will have to analyze the relevance of film, TV series and video games in the creation and modification of old, medieval and modern myths to our contemporary world.

The effects of World War I on the christian churches
11 November 1918 saw the end of the First World War, known at the time as the “Great War” (1914-1918) for its global scale, extreme destructivity and unseen casualty rates. On the one hand, wars evoke heroism and patriotism and bring people and groups to alter their mental boundaries and abilities. On the other hand, wars also elicit hatred, envy and violent behaviour, the settling of hidden accounts, the abandonment of ethical standards, and deep divisions and confrontations between families and societies. Since effects of the first world conflict were enormous and the shock waves were felt for years and generations to come, the question arises about the impact of the Great War on religion and the established churches.

Philosophical hermeneutics in the Islamicate context
This conference would like to engage with one specific context among all those which were and still are, as it were, “affected” by philosophical hermeneutics: the Islamicate context. The latter seems particularly relevant: on the one hand because it is intimately intertwined with the Western context; on the other hand because the Islamicate context retains a clear reference to religion that makes its entanglement with philosophical hermeneutics a burning challenge for all parties involved. The universality of the hermeneutic order should be put to the test of the Islamicate context within three different angles: the interpretative dimension, to address contemporary thinkers from the Islamicate world who have engaged with philosophical hermeneutics; the comparative dimension, in order to deal with possible transactions on the basis of common traits and divergences; and the creative dimension, to present attempts at using philosophical hermeneutics in order to develop new interpretations of canonical or traditional ensembles of texts.

This workshop aims to provide an opportunity for an explicitly international audience of scholars to reflect on the societal impact of Neo-Thomism, especially in the domains of law and socio-economic thinking. This is a topic deserving a multifaceted and in-depth analysis, using a broad, international comparative perspective and combining the results of very different fields of historical research: history of science, church and religion, social and political history, etc.

Ce colloque souhaite prendre la mesure des transformations culturelles, politiques et socio-ecclésiales advenues tout au long du XXe siècle, sur l'action des missionnaires chrétiens issus du monde francophone. Appréhendant le cadre globalisé et diversifié dans lequel s'insère l'histoire missionnaire contemporaine, ce colloque cherche à identifier et à approfondir les connexions transnationales existant entre divers réseaux, actifs tant au Nord qu'au Sud, parmi lesquels circulent les acteurs et actrices de la mission.

Collapse and Resilience of German Missions 1914-1939
World War I had a devastating impact upon German Missions (Roman Catholic and Protestant). A general description of German mission fields A.D. 1914 will be the starting point of the Conference. Case studies are welcome on particular territories such as Togo, Cameroon, East Africa, South-West Africa, South East Asia, Pacific area, China, India, Middle East. Attention will be paid to the predicament of local "orphaned" Christian churches and communities, and to the relationships between the local leadership with the new foreign missions authorized by the Allies instead of German personnel.

Il appartiendra aux spécialistes du « fait religieux » d’aborder cette question dans une perspective résolument comparatiste et en se penchant sur les aspects méthodologiques qu’elle soulève. Quels choix méthodologiques et conceptuels font les chercheurs, et pourquoi ?

British Philanthropies 1750-1914
Reforming and Redeeming the World and the Metropolis
This one-day conference wishes to explore those concurring and complementing aspects and the evolutions that philanthropy underwent between 1750 and 1914 in the British Empire and the metropolis. PhD and postgrad students whose researches focus on philanthropic endeavours and societies, missionary organizations and/or philanthropic literature from the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century are more than welcome to speak on this occasion. Speakers are also invited to reflect on the historiographical perspectives of those issues and discuss their representations and treatment in school curricula, commemoration events and ceremonies, such as the 2007 Bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade in the UK.

The international forum on the History of Religious Institutes in Europe (www.relins.eu) organises its 2012 conference on the role played by religious institutes in the renewal of catholic liturgy, sacred music, sacred art and church material culture during the period 1903-1962. Researches are invited to send in proposals dealing with the following themes: Religious Institutes and national/international networks involved in the renewal of liturgy, art and material culture; Motives, ideas and significance of the religious protagonists in the renewal; Conflicts and public perception of the persons and institutes involved. -

L’indépendance est un événement politique majeur dans le long cheminement d’un pays. Elle clôt une situation historique et ouvre une nouvelle ère qui entraîne des transformations radicales dans tous les domaines. Au Maghreb, la fin du régime colonial et les indépendances constituent d’excellents marqueurs historiques. Toutefois, les processus d’accès à l’indépendance, la gestion politique de ce basculement, le passage de la population de l’état de colonisée à celui de citoyens d’une société libre et les dynamiques de développement et de (re)construction diffèrent d’un pays à l’autre. -

Catholic perspectives of capitals, 19th and 20th century: Brussels, Paris, Quebec and Rome
Le colloque international « regards catholiques sur les capitales, XIXe et XXe siècles : Bruxelles, Paris, Québec, Rome » entend reprendre la question complexe du rapport des catholiques à la ville par le bout des capitales nationales. Comment se fait-il que, même dans des pays profondément catholiques et influencés par un clergé puissant, les capitales nationales aient été perçues par certaines élites comme des havres du libéralisme et des lieux privilégiés de tolérance religieuse tandis que pour d’autres elles symbolisaient toutes les subversions ? Il s’agit d’objectiver cette tension à partir de l’étude de différents contextes historiques régionaux en Belgique, en France, au Québec et en Italie. Le colloque se tiendra à l’Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), le 23 mars 2012. Les propositions de communication devront être envoyées avant le 15 novembre 2011 à : cecile.vanderpelen@ulb.ac.be.
