Book studies in the 19th century: student work in progress
La culture numérique a profondément bouleversé, notamment depuis les années 2000, le monde du livre. Les pratiques actuelles de création, d’édition et de lecture se reconfigurent en partie autour de nouveaux formats et supports du livre et de la littérature : livres « enrichis » ou « augmentés », livres numériques, livres audio, applications interactives pour appareils mobiles, hypertextes navigables sur le web. Dans ce processus de métamorphose, l’idée du « livre » – qu’il soit imprimé, numérique ou hybride, « homothétique » ou nativement numérique – occupe toujours une place essentielle, mais penser ses formes, sa production, sa diffusion, son positionnement au sein de la culture ne peut désormais faire l’économie d’une réflexion sur les conséquences de l’entrée dans l’ère numérique. Les études sur l’édition, le livre et son histoire doivent ainsi prendre acte de ces bouleversements, qui appellent – c’est le constat motivant cette journée scientifique – la définition d’un nouveau champ d’étude, interrogeant spécifiquement le livre – ou les livres – du XXIe siècle.

Existe-t-il une production langagière spécifique, une rhétorique, une structure propre aux récits d’expérience utilisateurs ? et à la fois à la participation du consommateur dans la stratégie de « publicisation » des marques : comment le discours publicitaire met-il en relation un énonciateur et un énonciataire dans une interaction sociale où les deux parties s’imbriquent ? Les communications pourront porter sur la manière dont les publicités mettent en scène les consommateurs, comment elles les représentent, sur les modalités de mise en relation et en conversation d’une marque avec ses cibles, et sur les prises de parole des consommateurs autour des marques, sur les récits d’expérience utilisés à des fins de marketing, sur le design d’expérience. Nous proposons donc de réfléchir aux diverses modalités d’intervention des consommateurs dans la production des messages publicitaires. Une attention toute particulière sera portée aux discours et aux expressions publicitaires sur le web.

The main focus of this conference will be translation as process, rather than as a mere product, which will prompt us to apprehend translated works as belonging to one or several networks, contexts and translational cultures. In short, translation is a concept that throws new light onto the exchanges and differences pertaining to contemporary digital literary culture. Contemporary digital literary culture mobilizes multiple operations: it involves translation across languages, but includes circulations characteristic of other translational issues at large: exchanges between interfaces, media, codes, institutions, cultural perspectives, artistic and archiving practices. In turn, digital forms of textuality share a certain number of aspects within ubiquitous environments, which means that translational processes will lead us to consider creative practices that stand beyond the traditional field of literature.

Cette manifestation constituera un rendez-vous important pour la communauté scientifique française et européenne impliquée dans la théorisation et la pratique de l’œuvre multipliée contemporaine. Ce colloque s’inscrit dans une volonté de mettre à jour plus spécifiquement les pratiques de la collection et de l’archive au sein du multiple et des éditions d’artistes (livres, affiches, disques, vidéos, éditions électroniques, etc.).

Text as object in the Middle Ages
The International Medieval Congress (IMC) is the largest medieval studies conference in the world. In line with the Special Thematic Strand in 2019 “Materialities” and the recent creation of the strand “Manuscript studies”, we organize sessions on “Text as object in the Middle Ages”. Texts, indeed, are at the same time an idea and a form. The latter is the result of a combination of inherited social uses and specific intentions by the various actors involved in transmitting the text as idea. This process begins with the authors, continues to the craftsmen (parchment and paper makers, copyists and chancery clerks, painters and illuminators, sculptors and weavers, booksellers…) and then on to possessors, readers, archives and libraries. All textual artefacts are concerned: manuscripts, charters, inscriptions, tapestries, seals, coins, etc.

Il s'agit d'aborder le thème du plagiat non de manière dramatique, comme un fléau contre lequel il faudrait lutter, mais comme un phénomène à comprendre, à analyser, à décortiquer – ce qui faciliterait la découverte des parades adéquates. L’acte inconsidéré de plagiat mine nos écrits, sape nos créations, menace notre capacité d’imaginer, compromet la richesse de notre diversité de penser. En un mot, une telle insulte remet en question notre humanité ; porte atteinte à son procès. Les chercheurs et enseignants-chercheurs auront de la sorte à se pencher sur le phénomène sous tous ses angles afin d’en éclairer les causes et les conséquences ; suggérer les mesures à prendre. Ils se questionneront sur les modèles de recrutement, d’avancement dans les carrières, les modalités d’évaluation qui poussent à une production effrénée d’écrits, obligeant à des quantités de publications souvent au détriment de la qualité mais surtout de l’éthique.

This seminar’s focus is on the physicality of English printed books and manuscripts, whether they be strictly literary or not. We are especially interested in how particular editions and manuscripts shape the text’s interpretation and reading practices. Research topics include, but are not restricted to: finding rare editions and manuscripts, archival work, book and manuscript collections, printing practices and scribal work, palaeography, manuscripts as books, the coexistence of manuscripts and printed books, editing printed books and manuscripts, electronic versus printed editions, editing and digital humanities.

Open acces, open science in debate
Revue française des sciences de l'information et de la communication (RFSIC) journal issue 11
Depuis le début des années 90, la communication scientifique ne cesse de se repenser dans un contexte numérique étroitement associé à un monde de plus en plus ouvert : archives ouvertes de chercheurs, revues électroniques sans barrières d’accès, mutation progressive des offres éditoriales. Les acteurs qui organisent la médiation de la communication scientifique, sociétés savantes, éditeurs, presses, bibliothèques sont donc sommés de « se réinventer » pour converger vers une science ouverte. Les enthousiasmes sont nombreux mais les nouveaux modèles économiques restent encore hésitants, en particulier pour les acteurs de taille modeste à l’échelle internationale. L’objectif de ce numéro de la RFSIC est donc de s’interroger sur les opportunités et les risques de la transition du modèle éditorial de la recherche et du régime de l’open science plus globalement.

Data encoding entails an analog-to-digital conversion in which the characteristics of an object, text, or archaeological site can be represented in a specialized format for computer handling. Once encoded, data can be stored, sorted, and analyzed through a variety of computer-based techniques ranging from specialized data-mining algorithms to user-friendly mobile apps. Especially when encoded data is open-source, researchers around the world can collaborate on the collection, encoding, and analysis of data.

Out of Spain: Posterity and Dissemination of the Aliento corpus in Europe and the Mediterranean
6th International Conference ALIENTO
Previous Aliento Conferences examined medieval sapiential corpora in the Iberian Peninsula, the ancient sources of the medieval corpora, the links between proverbs and sapiential literature in the Middle Ages, and addressed the questions of translation and context. The 6thconference will address the posterity of sapiential texts (of the wider Aliento corpus, in Arabic, Hebrew, Latin, Castilian and Catalan) starting from the Iberian Peninsula and their influence in Europe and the Mediterranean.

The conference will be held September 29-30 and October 1, 2014, in Paris. Keynote lectures will be delivered by Susan Hazan (The Israel Museum), Tom Elliott (New York University) and Thomas Jaeger (European Commission).

Archiving Research. Why and How?
This conference is about the methods and importance of preserving and promoting research archives. The international and interdisciplinary (libraries, archives, IT, researchers...) dimension of the meeting will offer an opportunity to discuss the diversity of practice. Reading historical sources in the digital age
After the inaugural DHLU Symposium in 2009 that focused on "Contemporary history in the digital age" and a second edition which tackled the methodological and theoretical implications of considering websites as primary sources (March 2012), this third edition will focus on the use of online thematic research corpora. Given that more and more sources for contemporary history are being made available online as digital research corpora — as on the CVCE’s site — and following on from the first two editions which examined the methods used to develop these sources, this third edition of Digital Humanities Luxembourg will focus on the various ways in which this material is used by humanities researchers, particularly contemporary historians and more specifically specialists in European integration.

Studies in Book Culture
If the links between video games and movies have generated interest amongst members of the academic milieu for some time now, the relationships, exchanges and boundaries themselves between the book and the video game constitute a field of research that remains relatively fallow. Nevertheless, the interactions between these two media are far from being exceptions, and the disciplines that focus on them (game studies and the history of the book) share a certain methodological affinity: both have a profoundly interdisciplinary basis; both assemble researchers stemming from very different horizons around a common goal. This kinship, combined with the abundance of continual exchanges between book and video game, prompted the idea to devote this issue to encounters between videogames and their adjacent books.

Chercher le texte : Locating the Text in Electronic Literature
Colloque ELO 2013 (The Electronic Literature Organization)
ELO 2013 cherche à ouvrir la discussion en dépassant la question de la remédiatisation de l’écriture littéraire, telle qu’elle d’abord s’est concentrée sur le passage de l’imprimé à l’écran, pour examiner comment les œuvres littéraires, et de manière plus générale, leur « littérarité », évoluent dans un environnement mondial qui a lui-même radicalement changé depuis les années où les premières œuvres littéraires numériques ont vu le jour. De ce point de vue, les nouveaux médias ne sont que les exemples les plus manifestes des phénomènes de remédiatisation, des formes de subjectivité et des systèmes économiques et sociaux émergents qui influencent la production littéraire sous tous ses aspects (tout comme nos vies). On décrit et l’on réinvente désormais les nouveaux médias en fonction de nouvelles formes de matérialisme : les réseaux discursifs trouvent de nouvelles configurations à l’intérieur comme à l’extérieur des institutions, tandis que l’agentivité humaine et la présence auctoriale revêtent de nouvelles formes, parfois étranges. -

En réunissant des chercheurs, des enseignants, des doctorants confrontés à ces interrogations et à travers les approches offertes par les disciplines SHS, notamment au regard des problématiques liées aux mutations des pratiques culturelles, au poids de la technologie, ou à l’accès à la connaissance et à la culture, ce colloque entend réunir et confronter des analyses, des résultats d’enquêtes de terrain et des études de cas qui concernent directement les mutations sociales à l’œuvre dont nous sommes témoins, sans limite géographique aucune.
