  Articuler l’histoire sociale et environnementale

  Proche-Orient, Maghreb, Afrique (XIXe-XXIe siècle)

  Cette journée d’étude a pour objectif de rassembler des historien-ne-s contemporanéistes spécialistes du Proche-Orient, du Maghreb et de l’Afrique travaillant dans une optique environnementale. Si la trame politique globale de l’histoire moderne et contemporaine de ces régions est bien connue (domination impériale ottomane ou monarchique locale, tutelle coloniale européenne, accession à la souveraineté nationale), les dynamiques sociales, juridiques et environnementales sont sous-documentées. Cette rencontre ambitionne de renforcer les liens entre des « aires » habituellement séparées tout en englobant une diversité de zones climatiques et d’écosystèmes, des côtes méditerranéennes aux forêts tropicales, en passant par les milieux désertiques. Afin de permettre un dialogue heuristique, il s’agira de réfléchir plus particulièrement aux manières d’articuler histoire sociale et environnementale, à partir de cas précisément situés et dans une approche comparatiste attentive aux sources mobilisées.

From most of the films made in Lebanon prior to 1975 to the cinemas of Iraq, Yemen, Palestine, Sudan, and elsewhere, there are many reasons why films and their histories may have been lost to current memory. From structural and environmental issues and the lack of investment in proper storage facilities and maintenance.

  Call for papers - Political studies

  Power(s) in Palestine

  Over the past two decades a great deal of research on the question of Palestine has pointed to a fragmentation of the Palestinian political landscape, divisions exacerbated by the Oslo Accords. The ensuing establishment of the Palestinian Authority (PA), in particular, fostered the emergence of new political dynamics and new sources of power and legitimacy, embodied in the conflict between Fatah and Hamas that has dominated Palestinian politics since 2007. The creation of the PA also encouraged a process of capital accumulation and a restructuring of social classes after 1993. Moreover, the dispersion of Palestinians across the world, the superposition of national and international legal realities and the diversity of actors in the conflict have contributed to the multiplication of sources and resources of power. This complex set of factors has prompted questions regarding new sources, mechanisms and flows of power in Palestine, as well as resultant dynamics.

  Logics, stakes and limits of cultural heritage transmission in Eurasia

  The thematic issue is about cultural heritage and patrimonialization. It aims at comparing the varying notions of “tradition” and “safeguarding of culture” within an empirical approach.We focus on conflicts about the creation of culture and how these globalised and specific contexts shape a changing self-perception of “ethnic identity” in Northern Asia, Central Asia and Eastern Europe.The articles may be on local as well as global expressions of cultural heritage: poetical genre, engraving or wood carving, architecture, ethno-parks or ecomuseums, cultural tourism, opposition to projects of valorization, etc. Analysis may also focus on the role of actors involved in local projects, on historical contexts or on international fashions.

Les débats, scientifiques tout comme politiques, sont anciens à ces sujets, mais réifiés récemment par le contexte de la pandémie. Ce numéro privilégiera les articles à dimension épistémologique et méthodologique, ceux qui  affronteront des questions précises ou analyseront des cas spécifiques plutôt que de contribuer à grands débats surplombants. Il accueillera très volontiers les travaux concernant d’autres pays que la France.

  Cet atelier souhaite déplacer la question sur l’orientalisme, souvent lu au masculin, pour se demander s’il existe un orientalisme féminin, construit à la même époque, par les voyageuses, les archéologues et les ethnologues femmes qui ont aussi visité ces lointaines contrées et dont les écrits moins connus, moins cités et surtout, beaucoup moins étudiés, offriraient peut-être un regard différent sur cette altérité particulière. Les voyageuses occidentales qui sont elles-mêmes en périphérie du centre constitué par les auteurs de sexe masculin détiendraient-elles une représentation de l’Orient plus libre ? Les schémas narratifs par lesquels se dit l’altérité orientale varient-ils significativement en fonction des genres ? Si oui, pourquoi et comment ?

  1956-1958: A revolutionary period that changed Africa (and the world)

  The objective of this panel is to compare the various social mobilizations that took place in Africa during the years 1956-1958 and which arguably constitute a historical watershed. The main aim of the panel is not the making of an abstract comparative analysis, but the analysis, based on the testimonial material collected, of how the memory of these events has been structured over time. Moreover, we are interested in understanding what the impacts of these social movements were on the structuring of states and what continuities can be found between the mobilizations of that period and the ary social mobilizations that have shaken the continent in the last ten years, from the ‘Arab Spring’ of 2011 onwards.

  Rethinking tobacco history: Commodities, empire and agency in global perspective, 1780–1960

  Tobacco was one of the most important globally traded commodities from the 17th century through to the present day, and yet it has received relatively little attention in the historiography of modern empires in comparison to other commodities, such as sugar or cotton. As a result, recent approaches to rewriting the history of European imperialism from a more global perspective have hardly been problematized with regard to the peculiarities of tobacco history. Nowadays, studies no longer understand empire as a rigid relationship between metropole and colonies, but take the dynamics of actors within an empire as seriously as the networks and global processes that crossed imperial borders, or indeed lay beyond them. The conference starts from this assumption.

Néanmoins, les préoccupations contemporaines concernant le changement climatique global ont posé de nouvelles questions urgentes aux historiens du climat : Comment les sociétés du passé ont-elles perçu les périodes de changement climatique rapide ? Dans quelle mesure ont-elles été affectées, non seulement sur le plan économique, mais aussi dans leur réflexion sur la relation entre l'homme et la nature ?

  Le mot institution désigne, selon l’une des définitions les plus courantes, un « organisme public ou privé, régime légal ou social, établi pour répondre à quelque besoin déterminé d'une société donnée ». Cette définition suscite des images stéréotypées : bâtiments officiels, bureaux, fonctionnaires, textes réglementaires… Elles s’étendent aux institutions artistiques, couramment associées à des lieux emblématiques – musées, théâtres, académies… –, ainsi qu’à des instances de subvention, de transmission ou de patrimonialisation de l’art. L’institution est parfois vue comme un pur instrument de contrainte normative, lieu de « récupération » voire de répression, opposée caricaturalement à la liberté, à la spontanéité ou à la subversion de l’art. La doxa ajoute parfois que les artistes se battent contre elles avant de les intégrer : signe d’une reconnaissance bien méritée ou de la pire des compromissions. Le but de ce numéro est d’explorer les relations entre la création artistique et les institutions.

Ce numéro spécial sur la crise syrienne et la question kurde (2011-2021) du Cahier d'histoire immédiate souhaite avant tout interroger le concept même des « questions kurdes » en essayant de décrypter les différentes réalités sociales et politiques kurdes observables sur le terrain. Les coordinateurs encouragent des propositions d’article qui se libèrent du poids du politique et des différents nationalismes pour mieux observer les utilisations récentes de la « question kurde » dans le contexte syrien.
