The conference Transmission of knowledge on fish and aquatic animals, texts and images (Antiquity, Middle Ages, 16th century) will be the closing event of GDRI Zoomathia, which ends at the end of 2021. The Zoomathia 2021 conference in Caen, organized by the ICHTYA program of Craham, is an extension of the 2017 conference.This conference wishes to emphasize, without being limited to ichthyofauna, on the scientific contribution of ancient sources on aquafauna in the broad sense and the biological and ecological knowledge of the species that compose it; the transmission and diachronic evolution of scholarly data on this fauna through the various knowledge media (texts, iconography - mosaics, illuminated manuscripts, early printed books and engravings, etc.); the mode of representation and identification of marine animals species permitted by old documents and related methodological issues.

Technologies, researchers and patients
L’ancrage social et citoyen de l’hôpital, objet d’un précédent colloque organisé par la Société française d’histoire des hôpitaux (SFHH), ne saurait être compris sans faire référence à ce qu’apporte aujourd’hui l’hôpital, parfois dans des conditions difficiles, dans le domaine de l’innovation médicale et aussi organisationnelle, les deux aspects étant étroitement liés. C’est pourquoi cette rencontre nationale et internationale est organisée sur le thème de l’innovation médicale et hospitalière, hier, aujourd’hui, demain. Technologies, chercheurs et patients. Les études attendues pourront concerner une période allant de l’Antiquité à nos jours, avec une attention particulière accordée à la mise en contexte des innovations médicales et hospitalières.

Denunciation or dissimulation? Medical error in Antiquity and the Middle Ages
Greece, Rome, Egypt, Near-East
Mediator, Depakine, Thalidomides, contaminated blood, breast implants... health scandals over the past fifty years have regularly focused general attention on the problem of medical risk. They have raised many questions, abundantly relayed by the different media, showing us how crucial and complex the question of medical error is: where did the error come from? But before becoming a scandal, medical error has also been an inherent risk in the practice of medicine, since its very beginning. A mistake in diagnosis, prognosis or therapy, no matter how small, can have disastrous consequences for the doctor and the patient if not detected and corrected. Far from the huge media coverage of current health scandals, what is the status of medical error in ancient medicines and what are its issues?

The mirrors of Hippocrates - medicine and otherness from Antiquity to the present day
Médecine et altérité de l’Antiquité à nos jours
Cette journée d’étude entend interroger le rapport entre la pensée médicale et l’altérité à des époques différentes de l’histoire. L’objectif est de comprendre comment la médecine a contribué, par sa façon d’interpréter les différences, à construire ou consolider des discours infériorisant certains groupes humains. Y a-t-il, au contraire, des arguments médicaux qui vont à l’encontre de ces préjugés ? Comment en proposer une lecture à partir du contexte au sein duquel ils émergent ? Comment et par quels biais les représentations et les conceptions de la différence sexuelle, physique ou raciale influencent-t-elles les pratiques de santé ? En mobilisant un large champ disciplinaire, ce sujet interroge notre vision des sociétés du passé et du présent. L’analyse fine du discours médical vise à éclairer, de manière originale, la question du rapport à l’Autre à travers l’histoire.

The 2019 conference in Trier will focus on this process of diffusion and transformation of zoological data in Late Antiquity and the Byzantine Period by selected case studies. We welcome studies on single authors or texts in Greek, Latin and Arabic, studies on visual images and monuments, or – in a wider perspective – on literary genres, different media in the visual arts or specific cultural contexts in view of their influence on literature and art.

Apprehending zoological categories in past societies - sources, methods and uses
Les relations entre humains et animaux ont, tout au long de l’Histoire, été marquées par la volonté récurrente des premiers d’organiser la diversité et la pluralité des seconds dans des catégories plus ou moins vastes aux contours plus ou moins bien définis. Ces classifications ont bien souvent vocation à ordonner l’apparent chaos de la faune environnante, voire à permettre à l’humain d’affirmer un statut à part face aux non-humains. L’objectif de cette journée sera de tenter de comprendre la variété de ces hiérarchies et d’interroger quelques méthodes et pistes de recherche permettant de contourner les difficultés liées à la disparité des sources, aux problèmes de conservation, aux barrières linguistiques et cognitives et à l’impossibilité de reposer sur des informateurs systématiques.

À travers ce colloque, on se propose de mettre en perspective historique les évolutions / révolutions annoncées dans le champ de la science médicale. Il se trouve que, dès la constitution de ses premiers corpus théoriques, la médecine occidentale a été traversée par des débats et des controverses portant aussi bien sur les conditions de la pratique du soin que sur les fondements épistémologiques eux-mêmes d'une technique s'appliquant à la santé des hommes.

Treatment - from the physical notion to its metaphorical representations in Greco-Roman Antiquity
Lors de cette journée d’étude, nous étudierons la notion de traitement en nous concentrant sur le monde gréco-romain, de l’époque classique (Ve siècle avant J.-C.) jusqu’à l’antiquité tardive (jusqu’au VIe siècle après J.-C.), afin d’analyser les divers types de traitements et leurs représentations et afin d’interpréter leur évolution au cours des siècles. Le traitement (en grec θεραπεύειν, ἰατρεύειν, ἰᾶσθαι ou en latin curare) est une notion assez large, c’est pourquoi nous souhaitons l’appréhender dans une perspective pluridisciplinaire.

SW4SH 2016: Second International Workshop
Classicists and historians are interested in developing textual databases, in order to gather and explore large amounts of primary source materials. For a long time, they mainly focused on text digitization and markup. They only recently decided to try to explore the possibility of transferring some analytical processes they previously thought incompatible with automation to knowledge engineering systems, thus taking advantage of the growing set of tools and techniques based on the languages and standards of the semantic Web, such as linked data, ontologies, and automated reasoning. SW4SH 2016 aims to provide a leading international and interdisciplinary forum for disseminating the latest research in the field of Semantic Web for the preservation and exploitation of our scientific heritage, the study of the history of ideas and their transmission.

Πολυμαθία et πολυτροπία in the Antonine period
Apulée de Madaure, « beau philosophe, très éloquent tant dans la langue grecque que la latine » (Apol. 4, 1) a vécu, selon une approximation vraisemblable, entre 125 et 180. Par là, il apparaît comme un acteur éminent de la culture impériale de l’époque antonine. La recherche récente a posé des jalons importants en replaçant l’auteur dans le contexte de la « seconde sophistique », un courant culturel qui s’est surtout exprimé en grec, aux II° et III° siècles. Mais des nuances, des précisions et des compléments restent à apporter : d’autres pistes fécondes sont apparues ou ont été renouvelées très récemment, comme sa proximité intellectuelle et biographique avec Aulu-Gelle, son identité provinciale , son rapport au langage et aux langues , son rapport au platonisme, et son attrait pour la chose religieuse.

Theories, attitudes and cultural representations of nutrition in ancient and medieval world
According to ancient biological theories, nutrition is, along with reproduction, one of the functions of the soul shared by men, animals and plants. At the same time, however, eating habits are among the starting points on which differences between humans, animals and plants are culturally built. This means that a transversal biological praxis can be used as an anthropological device, in order to to fix and identify specific boundaries and thresholds, either symbolic or theoretical, between both animality and vegetality on the one hand, and zoosphere and anthroposphere on the other hand.

La journée d’étude sera consacrée à l’historiographie médicale, au sens le plus large de la formule. La période retenue va de l’Antiquité à nos jours. L’histoire de la médecine, des médecins ou, plus généralement, de la santé seront interrogées du point de vue méthodologique, en laissant de côté le contenu factuel des sources ou des études critiques relevant du thème choisi. Il ne s’agit pas d’établir un bilan historiographique mais de réfléchir sur les méthodes anciennes et modernes d’écrire l’histoire de la santé et de la médecine.

Fragments d'érudition. Servius et le savoir antique
Les Commentaires de Servius (4e-5e siècle de notre ère) sur les œuvres du poète Virgile (1er siècle av. J.-C.), ainsi que les ajouts anonymes du Servius Danielis, constituent un maillon essentiel de la transmission du savoir antique jusqu’à nous. Le présent colloque se donne pour but d’analyser les fragments d’érudition ainsi transmis dans des domaines variés. Les communications s’attacheront à faire ressortir, de façon synthétique, l’état des connaissances présentes dans ces commentaires, et poseront également la question de la transmission du savoir et de ses transformations, ainsi que celle du degré de spécialisation et de vulgarisation.
