Gnwt (Genout) est une revue annuelle publiée au mois de septembre. Elle est éditée par le Réseau des enseignants-chercheurs en égyptologie et civilisations d’Afrique noire (RECECAN). Elle publie les articles des domaines des langues, des lettres, des sciences de l’homme et de la société, qui portent de préférence sur l’histoire ancienne de l’Afrique noire. Une rubrique varia peut cependant être consacrée à la diffusion des articles inédits en rapport avec d’autres périodes de l’histoire africaine. Tous ces savoirs doivent néanmoins avoir pour grille de lecture et fil conducteur les sources essentiellement endogènes de première main pouvant contribuer à une meilleure lecture et compréhension du passé séculaire de l’Afrique noire.

The Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence (PJCV) is seeking articles dealing with philosophical issues that arise in connection with the conception of conflict and violence within Plato’s philosophy. Conflict and violence are often regarded as two of Plato’s main interests in his political thought, especially when he discusses the dread and danger they bring to the city. However, is it possible to understand conflict and violence in Plato’s work only from this political and rather pejorative standpoint? It is possible to see conflict and violence in Plato’s philosophy as something else, rather than a threat to the harmony of the community?

Ancient religion in rural settlements
XVIII International ARYS Conference
This conference aims to deconstruct the ideas of rural religion as mechanically reproducing urban rituals and religious hierarchies and of the rural world as a space of cultural and religious resilience against urbanity. Rural areas represented an arena for very situational processes of negotiation between, on the one hand, administrative patterns and related social configurations, and, on the other hand, processes of social conformance to the very characteristics of a local specific rural environment, of adaptation to its peculiar habitus and religious customs, possibly involving gods whose competences directly mirrored a geophysical environment made of mountains, rivers, woods, etc.

The Department of Historical Science at the University of Málaga and the Institute of Historiography “Julio Caro Baroja” at the University of Carlos III of Madrid are organizing an international conference titled “Calling upon gods, offering bodies. Strategies of human-divine communication in the Roman Empire from individual experience to social reproduction”. Researchers of Ancient History, History of Religion, Archaeology, Anthropology, Classics, and other related fields are invited to present their research on this topic. The conference aims at analysing how self-experience of religious communication becomes a reflexive phenomenon reproduced in time and space to constitute a collectively shared narrative.

Naming and Mapping the Gods in the Ancient Mediterranean. Spaces, Mobilities, Imaginaries
Organised by the ERC Advanced Grant “Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency” (MAP - 741182), the conference Naming and Mapping the gods in the Ancient Mediterranean. Spaces, Mobilities, Imaginaries hopes to bring together the competences and specialties of multiple disciplines – archaeology, history, geography, anthropology, history of religions, philology, reception, social network analysis – in order to consider new documentation corpora concerning the intersection between the divine and space. Among other things, the conference aims to propose an innovative angle of approach: the intersection between the spaces and designations of the gods.

Religious practices, memory and identities in the Greco-Roman world
Les liens du fait religieux avec le social et les conduites de vie constituent, dans les mondes antiques comme pour d’autres périodes de l’histoire, un thème privilégié de l’histoire culturelle. Dans ce domaine, il est possible en particulier de chercher à comprendre dans la diachronie les modalités de l’interaction entre la construction d’identités par les représentations et le jeu des pratiques religieuses, dans une optique d’histoire de la mémoire. Dans un cadre élargi au monde gréco-romain et sur le temps long, il s’agira, selon une démarche visant à aborder les dynamiques rituelles sous l’angle de leurs altérations et restaurations historiques, de scruter les efforts de mémoire dont nos sources - tant littéraires qu’épigraphiques, papyrologiques ou archéologiques - témoignent dans la sphère des pratiques religieuses, en lien avec la construction des identités.

Dressing Divinely: clothed or naked deities an devotees
The XVII International Colloquium of the Association ARYS (Antiquity, Religions and Societies) is dedicated to the study of the links between religious identity and clothing within the framework of ancient societies and religions, from the perspective of the images either of the gods or of their devotees. Within the topic of religious clothing will be included the religious use of clothes and attributes, accesories, ornaments, body modifications such as mutilations or tattoos, hairstyles, nudity and, of course, the action itself of dressing or undressing, its conception and positive, neutral or negative consideration, or the act of assuming any of those human or divine complements, adornments, attributes or modifications of the body. We welcome the participation of consolidated as well as early-career specialists in the field of ancient history, archaeology, religious sciences, art history and historiography of religions.

Organology - perceptions - multi-functionality
Percussion instruments have a renewal of interest for a few years, after being a long time poor relatives of academic research and very often relegated to the end of the catalogues of musical instruments. However, recent studies show the complexity of uses of these items which, beyond their only sonorous mechanism, are mobilized in a wide range of contexts (ceremonies, theater, funerary field, votive offerings, etc.) for numerous reasons. Special attention will be paid to idiophones, but also to membranophones when data allows it.

Ce colloque réunira à Lyon des chercheurs européens et états-uniens spécialistes d'aires variées du bassin méditerranéen antique. Son objectif est d'envisager l’hospitalité en tant que vecteur de régulation sociale et politique permettant aux sociétés méditerranéennes antiques de gérer l’agrégation, l’intégration, la mise à distance ou le rejet d’un individu ou d’un groupe considéré comme allogène vis à vis d’une famille, d’une communauté, d’une cité ou d’un Empire. À l'heure où la crise de l'accueil en Méditerranée remet l'hospitalité au centre du discours public et scientifique, il s’agira ainsi de réfléchir aux racines antiques de cette construction particulière de l’altérité.

Une journée d’étude spécialisée, consacrée à l’usage des trames arborescentes dans l’exégèse biblique, aura lieu le 6 février 2018.

Strangers at home. Civilizing immigrants between inclusion and exclusion in ancient Thebes
La religion et le mythe en Grèce ancienne ont eu des fonctions historiques et ont été si étroitement reliés à la vie sociale et politique qu’ils ont eu des interactions constantes avec les contextes politiques. Pour cette raison, ils doivent être analysés d’un point de vue grec, qui prenne en considération leurs arrière-plans historique et archéologique. Les mythes étaient considérés comme une narration du passé et les anciens, loin de les considérer comme un corpus stérile de légendes, les voyaient comme un tissu conjonctif de leur société. En particulier, les mythes sur les origines des communautés urbaines comme Thèbes sont intimement associés aux changements sociaux, car ils ont contribué à la définition des lieux où ils se déroulent, et à la construction d’identités culturelles et nationales.

Depuis 2014, le programme « Pouvoir politique et conversion religieuse (Antiquité – période moderne) – POCRAM travaille sur les variations du regard et de l’attitude du pouvoir politique face aux conversions religieuses de la fin de l’Antiquité à la fin du XVIIe siècle. Le colloque de 2018, inspiré par les questionnements qui ont émergé de nos travaux précédents, conservant la perspective de la longue durée, élargit les terrains d’enquête et ajoute à la rencontre des trois grands monothéismes d’autres configurations habituellement moins travaillées et des horizons géographiques et culturels plus larges.

The spectacle of religion - individual commitment and community constructions
Les historiens de l’Antiquité ont admis le caractère profondément pluriel des pratiques religieuses qui sont articulées, en particulier, au politique, au culturel ou encore aux modèles éducatifs. Or le lien entre religion et spectacle, souvent évoqué dans les études sur les religions anciennes, n’a suscité à ce jour que peu d’études approfondies. Il s’agira pour le colloque de s’interroger sur les modalités de participation des acteurs du rituel en prenant en compte ce que nous pourrions appeler le caractère « spectaculaire » des célébrations religieuses.

Incense and religion in ancient societies
Although several studies have drawn attention to the role of incense as an ingredient in ritual and a means of communication between men and gods, there remains no comprehensive examination of the practical functions and cultural semantics of incense in the ancient world, whether as a purifying agent, a performative sign of a transcendent world, an olfactory signal to summon the deity, a placatory libation, or food for the gods. Moreover, recent archaeological research has provided evidence (alongside literary, epigraphic and iconographic evidence) that the physical origins and chemical constituents of incense are complex and diverse, as are their properties : resins, vegetable gums, spices, and a welter of aromatic products that could be exhibited and burned before ancient eyes and noses. These were components of a multi-sensory religious experience in which music, colourful costumes, lavish banquets and tactile encounters defined the ritualsensibilities of the community.
