State-building, social movements and political economy
Modernity was marked by the edification of increasingly complex and sophisticated state system, committed to governing territories and populations, through a multiplicity of administrative, fiscal, police and judicial networks. At the same time, new mechanisms for legitimizing political power emerged, based on the building of a public sphere and the dissemination of different forms of collective organization and mobilization: from associations to petitions, from political demonstrations to strikes and riots. Finally, a new regime of production and consumption was created in the form of a Political Economy directed to the creation of markets, the movement of goods and the accumulation of capital.

Changes and continuities in contemporary Public Administration
As pretext of commemorating the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Secretariat for Administrative Reform in Portugal (1967) is time to reflect on the national and international reforms that took place during the 20th century and aimed to make them more adapted to their objectives and needs. In this way, the meeting seeks to constitute a moment of reflection on these issues, considering its multiple dynamics at national and international level, in a multidisciplinary perspective.

Government by Expertise: Technocrats and Technocracy in Western Europe, 1914-1973
Technocracy is the political swearword of our times. From the multiple crises of the European Union to the recent elections in the United States, the role of experts in public governance is often invoked as one of the main sources for the political ills of contemporary society, responsible for the exacerbation of social inequalities, the decline in the acceptance of political institutions, and the rise of populist movements. This conference will look at the genealogy of technocracy and the trajectories of various groups of “experts” in western Europe’s mid-20th century.

Wages, labour markets, solidarity in European construction since the end of the 1960s
The financial crises faced by Greece, Italy and Spain since 2010 have caused a vast movement of reforms both at European and national levels. Three aspects are of particular importance : increasing public financial transfers through the institution of intervention funds to support the economies of the States in difficulty ; the reduction of the deficits and debts of Member States ; reforms of labour markets and social protection in the States in difficulty. It is on this last point that this working Group intends to focus in a historical perspective. This working Group will seek to consider how patterns of negotiation among European States have emerged from the late 1960s and early 1970s on this issue.

History of the Finance Ministry during the Giscard, Years 1970-1981 (2011)
Oral history and history of the administration
The Organisation of Agricultural Markets: the Office du Blé Model

The Memory of the Great Strike, Winter 1960-1961 in Belgium
