Locating the Lost Archive of Arab Cinema
This special issue asks how our histories of Arab cinema might change if we tackle the problem of Arab cinema’s lost archive(s). From most of the films made in Lebanon prior to 1975 to the cinemas of Iraq, Yemen, Palestine, Sudan, and elsewhere, there are many reasons why films and their histories may have been lost to current memory. From structural and environmental issues and the lack of investment in proper storage facilities and maintenance.

1956-1958: A revolutionary period that changed Africa (and the world)
The objective of this panel is to compare the various social mobilizations that took place in Africa during the years 1956-1958 and which arguably constitute a historical watershed. The main aim of the panel is not the making of an abstract comparative analysis, but the analysis, based on the testimonial material collected, of how the memory of these events has been structured over time. Moreover, we are interested in understanding what the impacts of these social movements were on the structuring of states and what continuities can be found between the mobilizations of that period and the ary social mobilizations that have shaken the continent in the last ten years, from the ‘Arab Spring’ of 2011 onwards.

Representations of conflicts in Arabic countries during the 2010s
La revue Regards – revue des arts du spectacle est une revue pluridisciplinaire publiée par l’Institut d’Etudes Scéniques, Audiovisuelles et Cinématographiques (IESAV) de l’Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth (USJ). Pour son premier numéro, la revue Regards lance un appel à contribution pour la section « Dossier thématique » : Images en mémoire, mémoires en image – Les représentations des conflits dans les pays arabes durant les années 2010. Ce dossier traitera de la place qu’occupe le cinéma, la vidéo et les arts visuels dans la vie culturelle et sociale des pays arabes, ainsi que des différents moyens engagés par les cinéastes et artistes de la région pour représenter les conflits en cours ou passés.

Art and History Museums in the Middle East as places of social and political production
This panel aims at studying how works of art are defined in Middle Eastern museums and how this definition encompasses their political project. We would like to study how museums are perceived, socially and politically, including on a commercial level, by local and international audiences.

Time and temporality in the Arab world, 19th-21st centuries
Si la question du temps et des temporalités est revenue au centre des interrogations des sciences sociales et humaines, qu’elle a prouvé son caractère heuristique et son actualité, elle n’a jusqu’alors que très peu été mobilisée dans l’étude des sociétés arabes, et dans celle des sociétés non occidentales en général. Ce numéro de Temporalités entend donc ouvrir un nouveau champ d’exploration et de réflexion, de dresser un premier inventaire des travaux interrogeant la notion de temporalité dans l’espace arabe, sur la période contemporaine, soit du XIXe siècle à nos jours. Il a vocation à rassembler des études inédites, mais également des travaux proposant une relecture de certains thèmes au prisme des temporalités. -

Workshop on Palestinian Refugee Camps in Jordan
A Lasting Temporariness: Population, Space and Social Practices, 1990-2010
This one day workshop will focus on the social and spatial organization of the camps, the social practices of their inhabitants, and the influences, interpretations and effects of what we call a lasting temporariness on the Palestinian refugee camps in Jordan. Due to their significance and status, the camps represent key social spaces for exploring patterns of interaction between different religious groups and national minorities, for examining governance, for studying development and planning issues (infrastructure and services), for mapping the constitution of territories and identities, and for analyzing the development of an intricate network of economic and political connections inside and outside of their spaces. -

Nous souhaitons comprendre comment une ville comme Alep est fabriquée et transformée par ses fonctionnements au quotidien et par l’intervention de mécanismes et de principes d’aménagement et de contrôle, dans son architecture, ses espaces, et dans les liens et les interactions qui la structurent. Nous nous intéressons aussi à sa zone d’influence et d’activité directe, qui constitue une partie de la Syrie : l’identité alépine est un élément de l’identité nationale dans un État-nation en cours d’élaboration. Nous nous intéressons enfin à son réseau d’interaction économique et culturelle à plus longue distance. -

La marginalité, dans la littérature arabe contemporaine, peut s’entendre à divers niveaux : l’étude des œuvres prenant pour thème la marginalité dans la société arabe, mais aussi les auteurs considérés comme marginaux, les auteurs marginalisés par le pouvoir et la censure, les littératures ou les oeuvres considérées comme géographiquement ou culturellement marginales. -

Bourgeois Seas. Revisiting the middle classes of Eastern Mediterranean Port Cities
Although there has recently been a notable surge of interest in the study of non-European middle classes as well as of Eastern Mediterranean port cities, most historians working on the field of the Eastern Mediterranean rarely treat port cities as sites where classes were formed and contested and where bourgeoisies asserted their class hegemony. This conference aims at bringing these two critical trends together. Following recent historiographical trends proposals are invited on any port city of the Eastern Mediterranean during the long nineteenth century, until about the aftermath of the First World War.
