  72th conference of the History Institute of French America

  Pour la 72^e édition qui se tiendra à Ottawa, capitale nationale et ville-frontière par excellence, le comité organisateur invite les chercheur-e-s à s’interroger sur leur rapport aux frontières, non plus en les enjambant mais en les appréhendant dans toute leur complexité. Par définition en effet, le terme frontière est hautement polysémique et, en dépit de l’éclatement des axes et des avenues de recherche qu’il suggère, rapproche et fédère autant qu’il divise et sépare. Comment s’exprime, en différentes époques, la notion de frontière en Amérique française? Comment évolue-t-elle au fil des siècles ? Quelles sont ses représentations ? Quels types de pouvoir impose-t-elle ? C’est autour de ces questions que le comité organisateur appelle les participants à engager une réflexion.

  Appraisals and perspectives in French-American historiography

  Pour une institution comme la Revue d’histoire de l’Amérique française, l’heure des bilans sonne de manière récurrente. Quels sont les questionnements, les objets, les méthodes, les orientations et les sensibilités qui ont animé et qui animent actuellement l’historiographie ? Tout en se moulant à cette vaste interrogation, les textes de ce numéro thématique doivent porter sur des figures, des œuvres, des thématiques, des espaces réels ou imaginaires, des interprétations ou des tendances reliées à l’historiographie de l’Amérique française, toutes périodes confondues.

  Land-Plot Mapping in Early Modern Rural Societies (Europe, Americas, Asia): from Production to Uses

  Despite their richness, these sources are still considered as secondary documents, dependent on a written corpus which could provide, alone, the legitimate subject of a historical study. Nevertheless the identification, digitization and online publishing of old maps have accelerated and keep busy archivists, curators, archaeologists and researchers. But the same can’t be said of their historical analysis, despite the work done by rural historians and historians of cartography. This conference will bring together researchers with a thorough knowledge of a large corpus of maps. The purpose of the conference is the preparation of a synthetic publication on the subject – which won’t be limited to the proceedings of the conference.

  Sustainability of Rural Systems

  Balancing Heritage and Innovation

  Belgium is a highly populated country with a long history of land exploitation. The landscape is modified through human impact, shaped by diverse agricultural practices, early urbanization and industrialization, the exploitation of quarries and mines and the dense development of canals, railways and motorway networks. Nevertheless, rural areas are important because farming activities, increasingly mechanized and technologically based, contribute to economic activity, especially to Belgian exports. Agriculture plays an important role in maintaining open space and offering many services, which may be called agroservices, to the new residents of the countryside and people seeking recreation. Due to this long history and sophisticated technological responses to different issues, Belgium is a suitable place to reflect on sustainability and how to balance cultural and natural heritage and innovation with special reference to the ecological and social dimensions.

  Changes in field systems

  Comparatives Approaches: Pace, Contexts and Forms

  The aim of this conference is to revisit the issue of the evolution of field systems on the long term in different regions and contexts. The discussion doesn’t concern how we can know field systems nor does it concern field systems themselves. The purpose of this conference is to study the impact of the contexts in which field systems evolve and to analyse how and at which pace the evolutions happen. The aim is to measure the impact of “crises” (of whatever nature: economic, political, environmental, etc.) on the evolution of field systems comparing the evolutions that can be observed in different regions and/or at different times. The main idea is to ask the question of how crises and political and economic incentives have an impact on the evolution of field systems in different historical contexts.

  Les neuvièmes journées nationales et internationales organisées conjointement par le Centro de Estudios de la Argentina Rura (CEAR, Universidad Nacional de Quilmes, Argentine) et l'Équipe d'accueil ITEM (Identités-Territoires-Expressions-Mobilités, Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour) proposeront d'analyser sur la longue durée les mutations du monde rural de part et d'autre de l'Atlantique, en insistant sur les articulations entre territoires, migrations et identités.
