Locating the Lost Archive of Arab Cinema
This special issue asks how our histories of Arab cinema might change if we tackle the problem of Arab cinema’s lost archive(s). From most of the films made in Lebanon prior to 1975 to the cinemas of Iraq, Yemen, Palestine, Sudan, and elsewhere, there are many reasons why films and their histories may have been lost to current memory. From structural and environmental issues and the lack of investment in proper storage facilities and maintenance.

The spaces of Asia on the world cultural scene
Dans L’Orientalisme (1978), Edward Said distingue clairement un Orient imaginé par l’Europe, désigné comme le monde arabo-musulman, de l’Orient construit par les États-Unis, qui concerne en particulier la Chine et le Japon. Cette partition binaire a depuis été remise en cause, et l'objectif de cette journée d'études sera donc de mener une réflexion sur la nature et la fonction des représentations de cet Autre suprême qu’incarne généralement l’Asie pour les aires culturelles qui la mettent en scène. Suivant une démarche résolument comparatiste, une importance particulière sera accordée à la pluralité des points de vue et aux rapports de force qu’ils impliquent.

Logics, stakes and limits of cultural heritage transmission in Eurasia
The thematic issue is about cultural heritage and patrimonialization. It aims at comparing the varying notions of “tradition” and “safeguarding of culture” within an empirical approach.We focus on conflicts about the creation of culture and how these globalised and specific contexts shape a changing self-perception of “ethnic identity” in Northern Asia, Central Asia and Eastern Europe.The articles may be on local as well as global expressions of cultural heritage: poetical genre, engraving or wood carving, architecture, ethno-parks or ecomuseums, cultural tourism, opposition to projects of valorization, etc. Analysis may also focus on the role of actors involved in local projects, on historical contexts or on international fashions.

L’appel à propositions interroge la catastrophe et la reprise, nécessaire, de la tragique explosion du 4 août, à Beyrouth. La reprise s’oppose, par définition pour Søren Kierkegaard, à la pure répétition — impossible — du même. La reprise est recréation sous un autre visage, en assumant les aléas de la mémoire, ses failles, ses imprécisions. Reprendre Beyrouth, c’est déjà se trouver sur un terrain miné, à ramasser des éclats de visages, de sens, de chronologie rompue. Reprendre Beyrouth, c’est aussi la repriser, en suturer l’architecture, l’histoire, l’héritage, la sauver de sa propre béance. L'appel, interdisciplinaire, s'ouvre à l'image (photographie, caricature, bande dessinée, illustration, dessin, collage) et au textuel (textes en prose, poèmes, réflexions).

Caricature in East Asia: comparative perspectives
Le colloque sera centré sur la caricature en Asie orientale (Chine/Taiwan, Corée, Japon, Vietnam, etc.) à travers le temps et l’espace. Les croisements de regards, les effets de miroir entre Extrême-Orient et Occident pourront également être considérés, ou encore l’image de l’Asie orientale dans la caricature occidentale (ou inversement). Ainsi, le colloque accueillera des communications portant sur des périodes, des cultures et des aires géographiques variées, qui pourront relever de disciplines aussi diverses que l’histoire de l’art, la théorie des médias, l’histoire sociale, politique et culturelle, la psychanalyse, etc.

New technology-based metamorphosis in Japan
In Japan, the kyara-ka phenomenon, ‘transforming into a character’ (Aihara Hiroyuki, 2007) is now giving birth to what Nozawa Shunsuke (2013) calls ‘an emerging art of self–fashioning.’ Based on elaborate disguise techniques, the kyara-ka phenomenon covers a variety of communication strategies and practices: cosplay, kigurumi, Vtubing, utaloid voice banks, use of voice-image filters to upload videos where humans look like characters… Exploring all the aspects of this ‘thingification of humans’, the conference will reflect on how and why a growing number of people market themselves as characters. The conference goal is to address the complexity of issues raised by these voluntary and, perhaps, ironical acts of obliteration. What is the profile of men and women who transform themselves into computer-graphic creatures? How do they deal with being loved only through their digital alter-ego? What little or grand narratives are being produced alongside? Can we still deal with the phenomenon in terms of authenticity (original) versus artificiality (copy)? What negotiations or refusals underly the use of characters as social masks?

This puts Arab producers, scriptwriters and filmmakers in a subaltern position in relation to European producers and funders, whose expectations in terms of content as well as narrative and aesthetic forms end up strongly impacting the film creation process. On the other hand, margins of freedom and resistance can be created within this system. This edition of Regards aims at addressing the complex relation between Arab cinemas and international film support funds.

L’association AWARE : Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions a été fondée en juin 2014 afin de rendre visibles les artistes femmes du XXe siècle, notamment par le biais de colloques et journées d’étude, d’un prix, de visites d’expositions et de l’enrichissement d’une plateforme documentaire accessible à tous et toutes. Pour donner de la visibilité aux recherches menées en histoire de l’art, cet appel se concentre sur les artistes femmes asiatiques et/ou ayant un lien significatif avec l’Asie de l’Est (en 2020-2021, l’appel à publication se concentrera sur les artistes femmes d’Asie du Sud et Sud-Est). Les propositions de textes peuvent porter sur des thématiques générales ou des études de cas particuliers, sur des grandes figures pionnières autant que sur des artistes moins reconnues, ou sur un corpus d’artistes femmes, actives au cours du XXe siècle.

Pop Culture in the Arabian Peninsula

The literature on pop culture in the Arabian Peninsula is particularly thin. While a rich scholarship has analyzed oral culture and vernacular poetry, less ink was spilled on those forms of culture that use new media, from tape recording to mobile phone aps and from TV production to YouTube. This issue of Arabian Humanities seeks to fill that gap and to analyze pop culture in Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait.

The journal focuses on Film Studies, Theater Studies and Visual Arts in general, in the MENA region as well as Mediterranean countries. It is published twice a year and is trilingual (French, English and Arabic). It comprises a call for papers section, a Varia section and a reviews section. For its second issue, Regards launches a call for papers for its thematic dossier as well as for its Varia section.

"Neon Genesis Evangelion" - Serial configurations of contemporary science-fiction
Cette journée d’étude centrée sur la série originelle de 26 épisodes, Neon Genesis Evangelion et ses adaptations cinématographiques au statut transmédiatique indécidable (Rebuild of Evangelion), a pour projet d’en cerner, au travers de son rapport original au genre de la science-fiction, les spécificités esthétiques et politiques. De fait, il sera nécessaire de réinvestir la présence de figures particulières telles que celles des géants, de l’adolescence contrariée, de l’animalité ou encore de la solitude et de la fin de la socialité comme formes apocalyptiques. Il s’avère pour cela prédominant de s’interroger sur la plasticité ainsi que sur les dispositifs de mise en scène, notamment par l’utilisation d’opérations techniques aussi diverses que la rotoscopie, le plan long, l’image subliminale, le décadrage, la contre-plongée ou encore des échos de plans d’un épisode à l’autre.

Burial mounds and funerary customs in the Caucasus, Northwestern Iran and Eastern Anatolia during the Bronze and Iron Age
The tradition of burying the dead in burial mounds (kurgans), usually consisting of a funerary chamber limited by stone or brickslabs and covered by dirt and gravel, started in the fourth millennium BCE in the northern Caucasus and then spread south to the rest of the Caucasus regions, eastern Anatolia and northwestern Iran during the Bronze Age and Iron Age. The spread of the kurgan tradition, as well as the territorial, political, social, and cultural values embedded in their construction and their symbolic relation to the surrounding landscape are under debate. The workshop aims to examine chronological issues, cultural dynamics at inter-regional scale, rituals and burial patterns related to these funerary structures. The beliefs and ideologies that possibly connected the "kurgan people" over such a wide geographical area, as well as past and present theoretical frameworks, will also be discussed.

Les interactions et échanges entre des représentants chiʿites duodécimains et chrétiens, catholiques ainsi que protestants, ont rarement donné lieu à une étude détaillée. Pourtant, les contacts réciproques ont été nombreux comme l’indiquent les récits de voyageurs, les rapports de missionnaires, les textes théologiques et polémiques, les lettres diplomatiques, etc. Ces sources présentes dans les archives et bibliothèques européennes, mais aussi en Iran et Irak, restent pour une très grande part à étudier. Ce colloque s’assigne pour objectif d’identifier la nature de ces relations interculturelles selon les époques, les milieux, les géographies.
