Économie politique et fiscalité dans l’Orient hellénistique et romain
Le projet de cette journée serait de faire dialoguer des historiens, philologues, papyrologues, épigraphistes et archéologues spécialistes d’économie et de fiscalité antiques afin de découvrir comment ces deux disciplines pourraient plus étroitement travailler ensemble et mettre en commun leurs savoir-faire techniques et théoriques.

Dans un contexte de concurrence accrue entre les territoires, le développement territorial et la mise en réseau sont édifiés comme des enjeux majeurs à de nombreuses échelles politiques et administratives. À ce titre, le colloque questionne l’inscription spatiale des dynamiques relationnelles et leurs rôles dans les trajectoires des territoires. La diversité des acteurs qui prennent part au développement interpelle les modes de gouvernance. La société civile et les structures de l’économie sociale et solidaire jouent notamment un rôle croissant dans le développement des territoires, à travers leurs initiatives citoyennes. Alors que les partenariats entre les différents acteurs sont largement plébiscités dans le discours public, quels rôles jouent les dynamiques relationnelles dans l’émergence des processus de développement territorial et, en particulier, dans ceux propres aux innovations sociales ?

An international round table organized on May 4 and 5, 2019 at the University of Salahaddin (Erbil, Iraq) highlighted the interest for a collective work that will address the question of Christianity in Iraq at the turn of Islam. Les Presses de l’Ifpo launch a call for papers related to this theme.

From quarries to rock-cut sites. Echoes of stone crafting
The conference aims at carrying on the international debate on the archaeological investigation of rock-cut spaces and stone quarries, considered as aspects of the same mining phenomenon: places in which specific empirical and handcrafted knowledge related to stone working is expressed and conveyed. The conference envisages a diachronic approach and therefore all case studies are welcome, without chronological limits.

The journal is interested in anything related to languages, translation, culture, and multilingual communication. Published annually, it includes articles and book reviews spanning through the whole translation studies spectrum.

New approaches to the history of soft power in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries
The study of soft power in the modern period is unequal, with much attention understandably paid to the Cold War when culture offered a surrogate for damaged and blocked political dialogues. But practices that aimed at promoting a nation abroad were not invented after the Second World War, nor were they inexistent before then. Some historians have traced their origins back to the nineteenth century with the formation of nation states (in Europe) and the growth of ministries of foreign affairs. In addition, the historiography has largely omitted soft power policies produced by and targeting so called “periphery countries”. Therefore, much remains to be written if we are to fully appreciate the history of soft power and its associated key concepts (public and cultural diplomacy, propaganda, publicity, promotion, oeuvres -in the French context, public relations) and the multiplicity of meanings with which these ideas and practices were endowed globally throughout the modern period.

Integrating the margins in the Middle Ages (5th-15th century)

Entre transition (périphéries, confins) et rupture (limites, écarts, frontières), les marges sont toujours relatives, pensées dans leur rapport avec une norme. Le modèle centre-périphérie a longtemps retardé leur étude, les cantonnant à une définition en négatif vis-à-vis d'un centre tout puissant, où elles étaient instituées comme le pôle perdant au sein d'un système dissymétrique. Poser la question de l'intégration des marges (territoriales, spatiales, mais aussi sociales), doit permettre de dépasser ce constat pessimiste et ce désintérêt – allègrement battu en brèche par les recherches des deux dernières décennies – pour les marges. En jouant sur toute la polysémie du terme, des marginalia des manuscrits aux marches territoriales, en passant par les individus et les groupes marginaux, ces journées d'études souhaitent susciter une réflexion transdisciplinaire, entre littérature, histoire et archéologie ; à la croisée des mondes médiévaux chrétiens et musulmans, conformément aux intérêts fondateurs du laboratoire du CIHAM – UMR 5648.

Monitoring colonised populations in the metropolis
Face à la très importante masse de documents produite par les institutions chargées de la surveillance des colonisé-e-s en métropole, de nouvelles pistes restent à investir. Pour cette journée, nous considérerons cette documentation dans sa dimension matérielle autant que comme support d’une manière de rendre compte du réel – qui, parfois spécifiquement politique et sociale, genrée, raciale, résulte souvent de l’articulation entre ces aspects. Dans le cas présent, il s’agira d’envisager l’archive comme point de départ pour appréhender la surveillance des ressortissant-e-s de l’empire présent-e-s en métropole, en la considérant non pas uniquement comme une trace, mais également comme un instrument véritable du contrôle. Ainsi, cette journée invite notamment à travailler les processus de production au travers desquels se modèlent et évoluent les catégories socio-administratives qui façonnent les secteurs de populations à surveiller.

New technology-based metamorphosis in Japan
In Japan, the kyara-ka phenomenon, ‘transforming into a character’ (Aihara Hiroyuki, 2007) is now giving birth to what Nozawa Shunsuke (2013) calls ‘an emerging art of self–fashioning.’ Based on elaborate disguise techniques, the kyara-ka phenomenon covers a variety of communication strategies and practices: cosplay, kigurumi, Vtubing, utaloid voice banks, use of voice-image filters to upload videos where humans look like characters… Exploring all the aspects of this ‘thingification of humans’, the conference will reflect on how and why a growing number of people market themselves as characters. The conference goal is to address the complexity of issues raised by these voluntary and, perhaps, ironical acts of obliteration. What is the profile of men and women who transform themselves into computer-graphic creatures? How do they deal with being loved only through their digital alter-ego? What little or grand narratives are being produced alongside? Can we still deal with the phenomenon in terms of authenticity (original) versus artificiality (copy)? What negotiations or refusals underly the use of characters as social masks?

Second young researchers' conference in historical linguistics in Lyon
L’association lyonnaise Diachronies contemporaines, vouée à la promotion de l’activité scientifique des jeunes chercheurs en linguistique historique, organise les Deuxièmes rencontres lyonnaises des jeunes chercheurs en linguistique historique. Après une première édition dédiée spécifiquement aux langues gallo-romanes, cette seconde édition entend s’ouvrir également à l’étude des langues anciennes indo-européennes. L’objectif de l’événement est de permettre aux jeunes chercheur·ses travaillant sur l’histoire des langues anciennes et gallo-romanes de présenter leurs travaux et d’échanger à ce sujet. La forme de ces rencontres est celle d’un colloque traditionnel à la suite duquel des actes seront édités.

The French Association into South-East Asia research (Afrase)
Les rencontres de l'Association française pour la recherche sur l’Asie du Sud-Est (Afrase) 2020 proposent de partager des histoires de familles en Asie du Sud-Est et de s'interroger sur la relation entre récits de soi et récits de parenté, Quelle que soit la nature de la famille alors considérée, famille réelle, étendue, reconstruite ou imaginée. Cet appel concerne tous ceux qui voudraient partager une réflexion sur ces récits, particulièrement sur les formes de ces histoires, leur conservation et leur transmission. Tous les supports de ces récits de famille sont mis à l'honneur, qu'il s'agisse de récits oraux, de textes, de dessins, de photographies ou de films. La question du dialogue au sein des groupes de parenté en Asie du Sud-Est et entre l'Asie et le monde est mise à l'honneur à travers les thèmes de la communication, notamment dans le cadre des réseaux sociaux.

Dialogues in the Late Medieval Mediterranean
Methodological encounters and (dis)encounters
The aim of this workshop is to launch a methodological exchange forum to analyze the panorama of the late medieval Mediterranean from different and complementary perspectives. During the last years, an increased number of projects focused on the relations between East and West, Christianity and Islam or North Africa and Al-Andalus had emerged in the international scenario. In the framework of these current research projects, this workshop has been proposed to achieve two main objectives: to create a dialogue space to share the recent research results of these projects, as well as to establish new research networks integrated by senior and young researchers which allow the development of multidisciplinary research lines about the late Middle Ages.

L’originalité de ce dossier thématique de la revue Communication (Revue du département d’information et de communication de l’Université Laval), réside dans le choix du sujet principal centré sur l’espace public dans les pays arabophones (autant du Maghreb que d’ailleurs dans le monde) et africains subsahariens. Il s’agit d’un sujet peu étudié par la littérature scientifique en sciences de la communication. Les objectifs du présent appel à articles sont d’interroger la pertinence du concept d’espace public à la lumière des travaux critiques, de privilégier des travaux empiriques ancrés dans des terrains spécifiques (les pays arabophones et africains subsahariens) et de faire émerger de nouveaux objets de recherche ou de nouvelles propositions théoriques. Ce dossier permettra ainsi d’apporter une contribution susceptible d’intéresser les chercheurs travaillant sur les problématiques relatives à l’espace public en sciences humaines et sociales et en sciences de la communication en particulier.

Ces doctoriales internationales veulent en effet placer les étudiant·e·s, dans une perspective de pensées critiques face aux questions des prédicats de leur recherche et des conceptualisations et face à l’usage social et politique des méthodes de recherche et des résultats de recherche. Seront également discutés, les méthodes de recherche dans et pour l’intervention locale, les méthodes de recherches sur les populations versus les méthodes de recherche avec les populations, mais aussi le rôle et la forme de la recherche-action en faveur de l’émancipation des populations et de la place de l’expérience dans la transformation sociale.

La revue Les Cahiers d’histoire sollicite des propositions d’articles pour un numéro spécial. Ce numéro, qui porte sur l’histoire de la Chine et des pays de l’Asie de l’Est, sera publié sous la direction de Carl Déry (chercheur postdoctoral et membre affilié du Centre d’Études sur l’Asie de l’Est de l’Université de Montréal). L’objectif de ce numéro est d’offrir un riche éventail des perspectives actuelles en histoire de la Chine et en histoire des pays de l’Asie de l’Est.

A global history of free ports
Capitalism, commerce and geopolotics (1600-1900)
Exactly how free ports arose in early-modern Europe is still subject to debate. Livorno, Genoa and other Italian cities became famous as major examples of a particular way of attracting trade. Between the late eighteenth and the nineteenth century the existence of free ports – as specific fiscal, cultural, political and economic entities with different local functions and characteristics – developed from an Italian and European into a global phenomenon. While a general history of free ports – from their first emergence to the present-day special economic zones – has never been written, this research network aims to pave the way for such an enterprise. The history of free ports research network is organising a number of conferences in the next years, in order to work towards a standard publication and interactive research platform for the history of free ports from the XVIth to the early XXth century.

Cette rencontre a pour objectif de permettre à des doctorants et jeunes chercheurs d'échanger sur les notions de transport et de circulation terrestres, dans un espace géographique et chronologique large : de l’Orient au monde méditerranéen, du IVème millénaire avant notre ère au XVème siècle de notre ère. Cette approche transversale, spécifiquement voulue et développée pour cette journée d’étude, a pour objectif de rassembler les communicants autour des questions de méthode d’analyse tant archéologiques, qu’iconographiques ou philologiques.

Contemporary ethnographic research in the Middle East
Many parts of the contemporary Middle East are confronted with war, sectarianism, transnational interferences, uprisings, and a comeback of authoritarian regimes. This brings about various difficulties for ethnographic research as a practice of knowledge production based on the immersion of researchers in given social contexts and the subsequent writing up and publishing of texts. The international conference No country for anthropologists? Contemporary ethnographic research in the Middle East explores the obstacles to do ethnography in the Middle East and take them as the starting point for reflection upon the role of anthropology with a view to the Middle East of today.

What do we picture when we evoke India? For its 20 th annual Workshop, The “Association des jeunes études indiennes” (AJEI) invites young researchers to share their knowledge and to propose a critical approach of the concept of ‘Images’ in the subcontinent: To what extent do images reflect the many realities and representations of India and how does the Indian imagery affect scholarly, artistic and touristic as well as political perceptions, from a western and an Indian point of view? The Workshop is aimed to develop a cross-disciplinary dialogue in social sciences for a better understanding of the multiple roles that Images have been playing from antiquity to nowadays in the perceptions and the foundations of culture and identities in Indian society. The aim is also to open some reflexive discussions on the use and construction of images.
