Call for papers - Early modern
Following in the footsteps of Fernand Braudel, an increasing number of recent studies show that the Mediterranean basin might be considered as a “borderland”, “borderscape” or “Frontier” suggesting that this area is not strictly a border between Christian and Muslim civilization, but a basin in which the two traditions and cultures meet and overlap, with an extraordinary variety of reactions to the hegemonic practices (acceptance, conflict, refusal, dissent). The aim of this conference is to bring together scholars who will discuss, from different perspectives and with a multidisciplinary approach, the variety of themes (topics) which revolve around the common issue of reflecting the problem of borderlands as a consequence of the encounter between Christendom and Ottoman Empire in the Early modern Mediterranean. The starting point of examination will be images, i.e. the usage of images (pictures, mental images, literary images and other visual representations …) as historical evidence.

Naming and Mapping the Gods in the Ancient Mediterranean. Spaces, Mobilities, Imaginaries
Organised by the ERC Advanced Grant “Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency” (MAP - 741182), the conference Naming and Mapping the gods in the Ancient Mediterranean. Spaces, Mobilities, Imaginaries hopes to bring together the competences and specialties of multiple disciplines – archaeology, history, geography, anthropology, history of religions, philology, reception, social network analysis – in order to consider new documentation corpora concerning the intersection between the divine and space. Among other things, the conference aims to propose an innovative angle of approach: the intersection between the spaces and designations of the gods.

The expansion and culture of herbs around the world - text and image
From the peaks of the Himalaya to the Mediterranean Sea, from the outset of the Silk Road to the far reaches of the Eurasian continent, the economy and culture of herbs has expanded over the course of time. Whether used as common products of consumption or considered as rare and valuable commodities, sold in their raw form or transformed, these medicinal or aromatic herbs have become precious cultural ambassadors in encounters with more and more faraway horizons. This book project centers on the idea of herbs as vectors of encounters and cultural exchanges. Indeed, the expansion and use of herbs around the world have led to the emergence of interacting and expanding cultural practices. The focus will be on defining the specific fields pertaining to the knowledge of herbs, with a particular interest in their cultivation, harvesting, commercialisation and circulation.

This meeting aims to foster a discussion about the continuities and disruptions which have conditioned the multi-ethnic dimension of Mediterranean cities. We would like to focus on the specificities of places and time in our millennial history that have produced both tangible and intangible cultural heritage. We would like to broaden the traditional horizons of our disciplines under the issues of our times, questioning the role of historical research and the forms of scientific communication nowadays, when old practices seem more challenged than ever by the overwhelming expansion of new technologies.

Et pourtant, depuis que son nom même convoque dans la conscience collective les bateaux échoués ou la paupérisation croissante de pays déchirés par la guerre ou ravagés par la crise, elle semble avoir changé de visage. En quoi la Méditerranée résonne-t-elle en nous ? Comment pouvons-nous incorporer son legs pour construire une relation au monde actuel. Plutôt que d’en faire un concept ou une marque, que la langue en fasse un verbe.

Creativity in territories, issues in sustainable training?
C’est dans la diversité des territoires que les innovations sont qualifiées dans une logique d’usage prospective, au-delà du court terme des inventions. Les combinaisons les plus réussies de la coopération sont celles où différents acteurs du terrain peuvent susciter et stimuler un « vivre ensemble » de leurs savoirs, leurs savoirs faire et leur créativité. Au-delà des compétences sectorielles liées à l’innovation, dont l’enseignement supérieur est traditionnellement dépositaire, les universités technologiques ont donc besoin de comprendre et d’enseigner des savoirs culturels et sociaux et reconsidérer les apports des disciplines connexes (géographie, histoire, sociologie, anthropologie mais aussi littérature et arts) dans leurs multiples expressions de lien (oralités, écritures, images & sons).

Territorial control in the Mediterranean geopolitics of the Modern Age (16th - first half of 19th c.)
The workshop will pay particular attention to the history of the Mediterranean of such small spaces and to the strategies adopted by the states in order to control them. The workshop aims at reconstructing a whole scenario, in which these small entities help outlining a history of the Mediterranean in which such small territories are not only included, but also assessed for their past importance.

Migrations and citizenship in southern Europe

Le phénomène migratoire international, défini par la mobilité volontaire ou forcée de populations d’un pays à un autre (à la différence de la migration interne), n’est pas nouveau en soi et ne date pas du XXIesiècle. La nouveauté se situe dans la nature des flux migratoires qui a changé aussi bien par son ampleur que par la diversité même des catégories de migrants. La crise de l’État social et les effets de la crise économique et financière de 2008 dessinent en outre de nouvelles tendances. Les obligations morales et citoyennes de la diaspora envers ses nouveaux arrivants s’affaiblissent voire disparaissent sur fond de montée du racisme et de la xénophobie dans les sociétés et villes d’accueil. Ces crises, qui frappent durement les pays et villes de l’Europe du Sud, suscitent des départs (des fuites ?) vers de nouveaux horizons chez des jeunes qui - sans espoir de promotion sociale dans leur pays, certains déclassés voire exclus - peuvent nourrir de forts ressentiments envers leur société d’appartenance nationale.

Gouvernance des métropoles méditerranéennes : quels modèles, quels outils ?
Dans le cadre des deuxièmes rencontres de l’AViTeM qui auront lieu fin janvier 2015 à Marseille, il est organisé une première journée d’études sur la « Gouvernance des métropoles méditerranéennes : quels modèles, quels outils ? ». Cette première journée d’études organisée dans le cadre du réseau MEDITER vise à favoriser le dialogue entre les universités et les professionnels sur les politiques urbaines et territoriales en Méditerranée. L’objectif final du réseau est de favoriser la naissance de réflexions croisées sur la réalité et les enjeux de la ville méditerranéenne aujourd’hui. Pour cela il s’appuie sur un réseau de laboratoires ciblés et l’organisation de journées d’études thématisées liant recherche fondamentale et praticiens de l’aménagement. Cette journée d’études, avec publication des actes, permettra de poser une première pierre visant à favoriser des échanges scientifiques de haut niveau en matière d’aménagement et de développement territorial sur le pourtour méditerranéen.

Telle une nouvelle orthodoxie, le développement durable occupe une place majeure dans les discours et les dispositifs d'action renvoyant souvent à des consensus apparemment contradictoires. L'objet de ce colloque consiste à interroger les interconnexions entre « les mots et les choses », autrement dit, entre d'un côté, dire le développement durable et, de l'autre, le faire au prisme des représentations sociales et dans les territoires. Le développement durable est entendu comme étant constitutif d'une épistémè spécifique en rupture avec l'accumulation capitaliste, en ce sens il repose sur des innovations sociales transformatrices des modes de vie. Ces innovations sociales sont-elles le terreau de (nouvelles) théories du développement durable ?

Facts and Values in Aesthetics: Contemporary Stakes and Approaches
In a text entitled The Collapse of the Fact/Value Dichotomy and Other Essays (2004), Hilary Putnam argues convincingly against a classic opposition which does not serve philosophical reflection positively. Putnam’s analysis mostly focuses on the theory and practice of knowledge, but one can legitimately extend it to other fields, starting with that of aesthetics, which sooner or later is confronted with the question of whether one defends or rejects the dichotomy. Keeping or rejecting it implies reasons to do so, but often these reasons remain implicit, most especially in aesthetics.

Partant de la thématique générale « Expériences et représentations de l’espace dans l’antiquité » (programme 2012-2014 des classes préparatoires littéraires), nous nous proposons de travailler plus précisément sur la triple question de l’utilisation, de la fonction et donc de la représentation de l’espace. L’espace est un thème permanent de la littérature antique. Tour à tour scruté, analysé, chanté, décrit, fragmenté, recherché, convoité, imaginé, utilisé ou délaissé, il s’impose comme préoccupation partagée – de l’habitant le plus humble à l’intellectuel le plus illustre. Les écrits antiques s’intéressent à l’action et à la conception, autrement dit aux expériences et aux représentations de l’espace ; ils nous invitent à un véritable voyage au sein des mentalités antiques. Car c’est bien d’une ouverture de nature anthropologique qu’il sera question. -

Historiens, sociologues, anthropologues, agronomes, diététiciens, producteurs de fruits et légumes, industriels de l’agro‐alimentaire, travaillent sur ces nourritures végétales selon leurs paramètres scientifiques, leurs outils méthodologiques, leurs intérêts économiques. Les travaux de recherche menés en ce domaine s’imposent avec des méthodes et des questionnements appropriés, loin de toute considération anecdotique ou pittoresque. Ils s’inscrivent dans une problématique féconde, celle de l’histoire et des cultures de l’alimentation où se recoupent le matériel et le culturel, les techniques et les usages, les nécessités et les préférences. -
