Les formes de résistances culturelles et sociales en Algérie. De l’antiquité à l’indépendance
Volume 3, n° 1 de la Revue d’histoire méditerranéenne
Terre de civilisation, l’Algérie a subi de nombreuses invasions depuis les temps anciens. Rome s’établissait en Afrique du Nord malgré la résistance des Berbères. Cette opposition militaire fut complétée par d’autres formes de résistances culturelles et sociales comme la romanisation, le donatisme et les circoncellions. Durant le Moyen Âge, le Maghreb se transforma profondément. L’islamisation fut presque achevée en moins d’un siècle tandis que l’arabisation d’une majorité du peuple amazigh prit plusieurs siècles. Certains facteurs permirent à la langue berbère de résister. L’influence du mouvement confrérique était une réalité sous les Turcs (1518-1830). Pour des raisons liées à l’impôt, la Darkaouiyya se révolta grâce à un grand soutien populaire (1806-1813). Depuis 1830, la résistance militaire des Algériens occupait les devants de la scène, amenant des réactions violentes de l’occupant.

Following in the footsteps of Fernand Braudel, an increasing number of recent studies show that the Mediterranean basin might be considered as a “borderland”, “borderscape” or “Frontier” suggesting that this area is not strictly a border between Christian and Muslim civilization, but a basin in which the two traditions and cultures meet and overlap, with an extraordinary variety of reactions to the hegemonic practices (acceptance, conflict, refusal, dissent). The aim of this conference is to bring together scholars who will discuss, from different perspectives and with a multidisciplinary approach, the variety of themes (topics) which revolve around the common issue of reflecting the problem of borderlands as a consequence of the encounter between Christendom and Ottoman Empire in the Early modern Mediterranean. The starting point of examination will be images, i.e. the usage of images (pictures, mental images, literary images and other visual representations …) as historical evidence.

Venice, a Mediterranean regional power
Economic, maritime and political perspectives, 1669-1797
This seminar aims to explore the relationship between Venice and the Mediterranean between the loss of Crete, the last major dominion of Venetian maritime empire in 1669, and the end of the Republic in 1797. Through the analysis of economic and commercial exchanges, naval activities and diplomatic/military relations of the Serenissima in the Mediterranean, we aim to discuss the dynamics of transformation and adjustment of the Republic’s new status as a regional power faced with the challenges of an Inner Sea crossed and populated by more powerful and richer competitors.

2021 marks the bicentennial of the Greek uprising which resulted, at the end of a long war, in the country’s independence:Greece was thus born as a modern nation while romanticism, particularly in France, made it one of its favorite themes,carrying out out a vibrant philhellenic movement. The commemoration should not, however, cover up that there were andare other Greeces, from antiquity to our own day. The theme of this issue is also given in the plural since the construction of Greek art in the modern era is but one of the phenomena considered here. It is the plurality of constructions of Greecein art which unifies the collection of studies and essays which we envision.

Power and emotions - sensitivities, representations and governance in Modern Europe (France-Spain)
Cette journée d'étude transpériodique et interdisciplinaire (histoire, civilisation hispanique, histoire des arts, sciences politiques, etc.) entend interroger les rapports de pouvoir et de domination (sur le plan politique, économique psychologique ou symbolique) s’inscrivant dans une dimension sensible et s’exprimant par des émotions (adhésion, résistance, joie, tristesse, amour, haine, etc.) individuelles et/ou collectives qui peuvent aussi bien renforcer les structures de décision que les fragiliser en cas de contestation radicale. Le domaine d’étude visé est l’Epoque Moderne (France-Espagne) sans pour autant s’interdire d’explorer des repères plus anciens, dotés d’une valeur exemplaire ou fondatrice.

Creating a diaspora in the city - memories, representations and institutions
Mediterranean Europe, 14th-18th century
Nous souhaitons aborder dans ces journées d’études les enjeux de la construction d’un groupe en diaspora à travers le cadre urbain, pris à la fois comme espace et territoire dans lequel se déploient les perceptions et les stratégies des acteurs, et pris également comme lieu dans lequel les communautés interagissent entre elles, avec les institutions et autorités locales. Nous proposons donc de faire se rencontrer l’étude des diasporas avec deux thématiques actuelles de l’histoire urbaine : l’étude de la répartition et de l’implantation des étrangers en ville d’une part, et celle des usages de l’espace urbain d’autre part. Il s'agira de comprendre, par l’urbain et ses spécificités, comment on aboutit à des identités collectives – parfois souples et négociées, parfois assignées de manière plus autoritaire – de ces groupes sociaux qui finissent par être pensées et se penser comme diaspora, voire par être institutionnalisés.

A global history of free ports
Capitalism, commerce and geopolotics (1600-1900)
Exactly how free ports arose in early-modern Europe is still subject to debate. Livorno, Genoa and other Italian cities became famous as major examples of a particular way of attracting trade. Between the late eighteenth and the nineteenth century the existence of free ports – as specific fiscal, cultural, political and economic entities with different local functions and characteristics – developed from an Italian and European into a global phenomenon. While a general history of free ports – from their first emergence to the present-day special economic zones – has never been written, this research network aims to pave the way for such an enterprise. The history of free ports research network is organising a number of conferences in the next years, in order to work towards a standard publication and interactive research platform for the history of free ports from the XVIth to the early XXth century.

The flower, the pig, the flask and the corpse - ecofacts and artifacts in funerary scenography
En archéologie, les rituels funéraires sont toujours complexes à appréhender, à restituer et à comprendre. Les travaux engagés sur cette thématique depuis quelques décennies ont mis en évidence la complexité des cérémonies au sein desquelles la création de la sépulture n’est qu’une étape. Les autres phases du rituel, comme la préparation du corps, le traitement des restes du bûcher en cas de crémation, les rituels funéraires et commémoratifs, sont souvent mal documentés tandis que les substances organiques ont rarement survécu à l’épreuve du temps. Parmi celles-ci, les offrandes biologiques (végétales / florales, alimentaires, cosmétiques, aromatiques, médicinales et magico-thérapeutiques…) posent de nombreux problèmes d’identification et d’interprétation dans le cadre des funérailles ou des commémorations.

Connecting Mediterranean and Atlantic History
2nd meeting of the Atlantic Italies Network
The Atlantic Italies Network – a developing network of scholars working on economic entanglements and related cultural phenomena that emerged between Italian-speaking territories and the Atlantic world from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century – aims at examining connections related to European states without colonies as well as their links to sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas and at contributing to current attempts to analyse early modern Italian territories in their global contexts. The second meeting of the network will particularly appreciate papers involving economic dimensions related to shipping, trade and economic interconnections, but we welcome all proposals contributing to our overall perspective.

El proyecto nace con la necesidad de recordar lo mucho que ha aportado la Hélade tanto en la literatura española como en la hispanoamericana, deudoras ambas de la tradición clásica, no sólo desde la intrínseca unidad que se crea entre mito y literatura, sino desde la filosofía clásica y la producción poética y narrativa en general.

Maritime voyages in the Mediterranean - from the Middle Ages to early Modernity
Ce colloque souhaite aborder le thème de l'itinérance en l’appliquant de manière privilégiée à l’espace maritime de la Méditerranée dans toute son étendue et toutes ses cultures. L’objet du colloque sera de rendre compte des modalités et des enjeux des circulations et des déplacements de personnes (départs, traversées, escales) autour des ports du bassin méditerranéen, dans leur dimension historique comme imaginaire. Les communications pourront s’appuyer sur un corpus varié de textes (récits de voyage, témoignages, documents d’archive, traités…) et de langues (latin, arabe, hébreu, français, italien, espagnol, anglais...).

Cities, urban societies and syphilis in the Mediterranean and beyond (16th-21st centuries)
Venue du fond des âges, plus que toute autre maladie contagieuse peut-être, la syphilis (associée aux autres pathologies vénériennes) incarne les tensions d’un monde qui se mondialise à partir du XVIe siècle avec une phase d’accélération au XIXe siècle. Si l’on suit Alain Corbin dans la description qu’il donne de « l’image composite du péril vénérien, spectre inédit, dont les traits originaux […] ne s’effaceront pas avant les années médianes du XXe siècle », alors s’impose à notre étude une épidémie lente dont Peter Baldwin saisit la dynamique entre « prostitution et promiscuité » et met en lumière les « velléités de régulation » qui tentent de se superposer aux dynamiques de circulations. Le colloque souhaite donc conjuguer une pluralité de contexte (colonial, métropolitain …) et une perspective de temps long avec l’expérience contemporaine d’une épidémie de syphilis qui connaît une recrudescence.

Territorial control in the Mediterranean geopolitics of the Modern Age (16th - first half of 19th c.)
The workshop will pay particular attention to the history of the Mediterranean of such small spaces and to the strategies adopted by the states in order to control them. The workshop aims at reconstructing a whole scenario, in which these small entities help outlining a history of the Mediterranean in which such small territories are not only included, but also assessed for their past importance.

Mobilities, surveillance and assistance in the Western Mediterranean (16th-21st centuries)
Le contrôle du territoire et des hommes qui y circulent constitue la réalité très actuelle des rivages de la Méditerranée occidentale. Depuis longtemps, ces espaces cosmopolites et très attractifs (commerce, tourisme, industrie…) sont caractérisés par le contact constant entre altérités qui favorisent aussi bien les attractions et les circulations de populations que les redéfinitions et les crispations identitaires. L’heure de la globalisation n’empêche pas certains espaces d’afficher aujourd’hui avec force, parfois avec violence, leur particularité, où la religion et les pouvoirs politiques constituent un puissant instrument de définition et d’encadrement des sociétés, un marqueur incontournable des identités.

Dairy products in Medieval and post-medieval Mediterranean countries: production, trade, consumption
Contrasting with the Prehistory for which the question of the beginning of the consumption of dairy products is of critical importance, few studies are devoted to the production and consumption of these products during medieval and post-medieval periods. However, dairy products, especially cheese, are key components of the Mediterranean diet. Sometimes disregarded, sometimes recommended by dieticians, the latter are traded both at local and international scale. Therefore it seems necessary to organize a workshop on "Dairy products in Medieval and post-medieval Mediterranean countries: production, trade, consumption".

Urban spaces, mobility and "citadinité" in the Mediterranean cities (14th to 18th century)
The panel focuses on mobility and insertion in the cities of the Mediterranean area, during the early modern age. Since the Ancient times, Mediterranean cities are centers for commercial and cultural exchanges, and crossroads of migratory streams. These "sedimented" cities have a long tradition of multi-cultural society and reception of foreigners while remaining, to this day pivotal centers for international circulation and migration, and gateways to Europe.
