Peripheries, Minorities and Taboos in the films of Marcel Łoziński, Pál Schiffer and Želimir Žilnik
The international conference bears a transdisciplinary outlook as it cross-references a variety of scientific fields (history of cinema, aesthetics, philosophy, history, political science, anthropology, sociology, etc.). A film retrospective of documentary films will be held at the Cinémathèque du documentaire (Centre Pompidou, Paris), as well as screenings followed by debates and panel discussions at Inalco in the presence of the filmmakers Marcel Łoziński and Želimir Žilnik.

"All Alone" in East-Central Europe: Reinventing the Orphan from the Fascist to the Socialist Era
International PhD Contract 2020-2023
Full-time, 36-month-long international PhD contract at Sorbonne University (PhD program IV) within the research centre Eur'ORBEM and in partnership with the French Research Centre in Social Sciences (CEFRES) in Prague, from 1 October 2020, under the supervision of Clara Royer. The PhD thesis may be written in French or in English. PhD propositions should focus on the discourses and practices surrounding the orphan condition in literature and/or visual arts (cinema, photography, graphic arts and so forth) in the wake of the violence and demographic upheavals that characterized 20th century East-Central Europe. Because of its interdisciplinary scope, applicants with a background in social history, literary studies and/or visual arts specialized in one or several countries of East-Central Europe may apply.

Cette année, ce séminaire conçu comme un moment important à la sociabilité des doctorant·e·s du CéSor se composera d’une partie à orientation théorique et d’une autre axée sur la méthodologie. L’axe théorique se penchera principalement sur les questions d’identités dans toutes les orientations et recompositions. La multiplication et le renouvellement incessant des emplois de la notion d'identité n'étant plus à démontrer, le but de ces séances sera de réfléchir d’un point de vue interdisciplinaire aux divers expressions identitaires et aux orientations données aux recherches dans lesquelles entre une telle notion, en multipliant les terrains (terrains ethnographiques, archives ou corpus de sources), les périodes et les aires géographiques.

Post-soviet diaspora(s) in Western Europe (1991-2017)
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, millions of former soviet citizens crossed the national borders in search of better lives in new countries, in what was the biggest migration tide since the end of World War II. These Post-Soviet migrants were diverse in origins, strategies and expectations. They often represented a challenge to the orthodox views of migration processes, since in most cases these flows could not be easily described and analysed following commonly accepted theoretical frameworks. Everybody seemed to be on the move: labour migrants, political refugees, cross-border traders, “tourists” planning to forget their return... and in a short period, they spread all over Western Europe.

Border Textures: Interwoven Practices and Discursive Fabrics of Borders
2nd World Conference of the Association for Borderlands Studies - Panel
In view of the current political developments in Europe, the scientific study of borders has increasingly gained importance. Cultural Studies has reacted to these developments by generating complex and more and more detailed theories and tools for describing and analyzing border phenomena. Cultural border studies champion approaches which do not examine spatial, material, temporal or cultural aspects in isolation but investigate their intersectional and performative interactions. This panel provides a space for explorative investigation of potential approaches for cultural border studies, focusing on interactions between material and immaterial manifestations of the border.

2nd World Conference of the Association for Borderlands Studies - Panel
The societal events of the last decade have challenged Border Studies more than ever before. This can be seen not only in the field’s growing institutionalisation but also in its developments in research: these include the relativization of geopolitical perspectives by cultural studies approaches, the spatialisation of the border concept (e.g. zone, third space, exter/internalisation etc.), the decentralisation of the border in favour of processes (e.g. b/ordering, othering etc.), the pluralisation of the border concept (e.g. walls, differences, (dis)continuities, demarcations) or the complexification of the border (e.g. scapes, textures). The panel is treating these developments and other turns as an opportunity for a long-overdue self-examination, which in the light of the resurgence of borders seems necessary from both a societal and scientific perspective.

Men in Eastern Europe – Ruptures, Transformations, and Continuities in the 20th Century
Our main objectives are to reconsider the state of the art and discuss new ways for writing a history of masculinities under socialism. The central questions of the workshop are: Which role were men and fathers to play in the construction of a “new” socialist family? How where masculinities transformed in socialist movements and state-socialist countries? The workshop is interested, on the one hand, in the ideologies and the utopian reflexions of the place of men in a future communist society. On the other hand, it aims at questioning the everyday life of socialist men and fathers, as well as the everyday life of men and fathers living under socialism.

Balkans workshop reading workshop (2016-17)
L'atelier Balkans est conçu comme un espace de dialogue et de discussion pour les jeunes chercheurs travaillant sur les Balkans. L'atelier de lecture proposé cette année aura pour objectif d'interroger les représentations des Balkans et leurs transformations sociales, économiques et politiques contemporaines. Dans le cadre de nos questionnements, plutôt qu'un lieu, les Balkans pourront être considérés comme un projet (Bakic-Hayden 1995). À partir de la diversité des cas nationaux, la lecture des articles proposés nous permettra d'appréhender les Balkans à travers leurs spécificités mais aussi comme un laboratoire pertinent pour des interrogations dépassant largement leur cadre : mémoire du communisme, travail, genre, économie de la dette.

The making of cultural policies
Trans-Acting Matters: Areas and Eras of a (Post-)Ottoman Globalization
This workshop takes place in the framework of the research project “Trans-Acting Matters: Areas and Eras of a (Post-)Ottoman Globalization”. It aims to analyse the making of cultural policies and actions in Turkey and the post-ottoman spaces. We wish to question the ways in which the circulations participate in the construction of cultural policies today as well as to rethink the earlier cultural policies and actions from the late Ottoman Empire onwards. The workshop attempts to question the co-production of cultural policies, of their spaces and territories, as well as the plurality of the conceptions of culture carried by cultural policies. The workshop will focus on the phenomena of hybridity, of connections, and associations of various actors which co-produce original forms of cultural policies.

Avec les indépendances et la décolonisation, des étudiants africains sont venus très nombreux en URSS ; mais moins souvent en Russie après la Perestroïka. Quelle a été l’histoire de ces étudiants partis se former, non pas dans l’ancien pays colonisateur, comme cela était souvent le cas, mais dans un pays étranger envers lequel ils étaient souvent partagés entre admiration et méfiance ? Comment y sont-ils arrivés ? Quelles ont été alors leurs expériences ? Qu’est-ce qui les a marqués ? Quel a été leur devenir professionnel et politique ?

Conference, symposium - Modern
Ce colloque clôture un projet ANR mené au Centre d'études des mondes russe, caucasien et centre européen (CERCEC, CNRS/EHESS), intitulé « Caucase et Asie Centrale : un autre Sud ? ». Il rassemblera à Almaty, outre les membres de l'équipe du projet, une cinquantaine de participants venus d'Asie Centrale, du Caucase, de Russie, d'Europe des Etats Unis et du Japon. Pluridisciplianire, ce colloque a pour ambition d’interroger la pertinence des outils heuristiques élaborés à partir de terrains situés au « Sud », mais aussi de la notion même de « Sud(s) » pour appréhender les périphéries méridionales de l’espace post-soviétique. Il entend réunir des chercheurs de toutes les disciplines des sciences sociales (sociologie, histoire, sciences politiques, géographie, anthropologie, démographie, économie). Tourism and Memory in Central and Eastern Europe: returning to the places of trauma
Remembering violence in Central and Eastern Europe
Depuis 1989 est apparu un « tourisme du retour » sur les lieux des violences commises envers les populations par ou dans le sillage des régimes totalitaires du XXe siècle. Ce tourisme mémoriel, variante du « tourisme noir », se dirige d’une part vers les lieux de la destruction (Auschwitz, Treblinka) ou de la répression, mais aussi vers lieux où ces persécutions ont eu lieu et où l’histoire familiale s’est cassée. Les « touristes du souvenir » cherchent les traces d’une brisure, d’un traumatisme, d’une mémoire qui hante leur présent et qu’ils cherchent à exorciser. Ils cherchent à reconstituer une partie d’une histoire familiale ou individuelle inconnue ou perdue, parfois sur plusieurs générations. La quête de cette mémoire meurtrie est devenue un élément de la construction identitaire et de pratiques sociales en Europe centrale et orientale. -

Approaches to post-Soviet transformations
Summer school in Dnipropetrovsk (Ukraine)
Two decades after the collapse of the USSR, evolutionary paths travelled by post-Soviet societies are spectacularly diverse - posing analytical challenges for social scientists. In the first post-Soviet years, these societies were expected to “Westernize” and so social transformations were supposedly transitional. Later, it became obvious that genuine evolution observed in the former USSR needed genuine analytical tools. Dramatic change exhibiting a strange (at times conflict-ridden) coexistence of transformation and continuity neither elicits comparison to “normal” social evolution, nor can it be explained as a chaotic or un-analysable specificity. The aim of the summer school is to discuss different approaches / concepts used to analyse post-Soviet transformations and to question their heuristic effectiveness. The Summer School is designed to be interdisciplinary and international. -

Le Revue française de socio-économie lance un appel à contribution sur le thème « Les pays post-communistes en mal de développement ». Il s'agira d'interroger le développement à l'aune des événéments qui se sont produits, dans les pays post-communistes, au cours des deux dernières décennies. Les analyses concerneront les pays de la Communauté des États indépendants (y compris la Géorgie) et ceux de l'Europe du Sud-Est (dont la Bulgarie et la Roumanie). Sont exclus les pays d'Europe centrale et les pays baltes. -

La Revue française de socio-économie lance un appel à articles sur le thème « Les pays post-communistes en mal de développement ». Il s'agira d'interroger le développement à l'aune des événements qui se sont produits au cours des deux dernières décennies. Sont concernés les pays issus de l'Union soviétique et les anciens pays satellites de l'Europe du Sud-Est. Les contributions sont attendues pour le 25 janvier 2009.
