The 11th annual international conference on Nordic and Baltic Studies
Brexit has just happened and its consequences are not yet fully comprehended. Would the outcome be a return to a status quo ante the Brentry of 1 January 1973 in British-EU relations? Would Britain become a sort of bigger Norway tightly connected to the EU, but yet not fully a member of the united organization? Would Britain really continue to exist as such? Would Scotland, not to mention other territories, emulate London and decide on their own Brexit, this time from the United Kingdom, in order to rejoin the EU? Would actually Brexit become a pathway for other skeptical EU nations? Would Brexit rocket exclusive forms of nationalisms? Would the whole of united Europe collapse, on the long run, as a result of Brexit as the League of Nations had become toothless after the US Senate had vetoed the Pact of League of Nations? But what effect is going to have Brexit on Scandinavian countries which historically have been closely connected to Britain? How is it reflected in Scandinavian intellectual milieus, in mass-media, in public discourses? What about the Baltic states which received a strong support from Britain in key moments of their history, for instance when Royal Navy came at the rescue of Estonian and Latvian independence following World War I or in the process of re-enactment of Baltic sovereignty after the collapse of the Soviet Union? Christina, Queen of Sweden at the crossroads
L'université de Bourgogne (laboratoire CPTC), en collaboration avec l'Assocation Christine de Suède, organise un colloque international sur le thème « Christine de Suède à la croisée des chemins » les 5-7 octobre 2020 à Dijon. Nous voudrions nous pencher ici sur cette « matière de Christine de Suède », de façon comparatiste et transversale, sans exclusive. L’idée maitresse de notre réflexion sera celle d’une Christine de Suède « à la croisée des chemins » : croisée des chemins européens (elle est passé à Dijon, ce dont le colloque se souviendra), personnage entre les « genders », personnage entre les « genres », personnage entre les savoirs.

Lands of heroism, tyranny and false christianity
Lithuania and the “margins” of Europe
The aim of these two sessions is to explore the place of Lithuania within the geopolitical and social sphere of Europe during the later Middle Ages. The first looks to explore the encounters between Lithuania and the other political and religious groups that held stakes within the Baltic arena. The second session will examine the various perceptions Christian Europeans had of Lithuania and place it within a larger reflection on the image of the so-called “margins” of Europe in the Western European discourse.

The politics of the Arctic in perspectives
Loin désormais d’une image d’un espace arctique unifié, gelé et exotique, ce colloque aura à cœur de discuter et de réfléchir sur la diversité de ces mondes arctiques en s’appuyant sur des recherches innovantes et transdisciplinaires. Les liens entre différents prismes d’analyse – géographique, stratégique, historique, politiste etc. - permettent de voir dans la région arctique un espace particulièrement sensible à la recomposition de la scène politique internationale comme aux bouleversements climatiques qui modifient singulièrement cette région vulnérable.

"Wanderlust": Björk's total art
Le parcours de Björk se distingue par un renouvellement constant et un naturel expérimental toujours inscrit dans un format de chanson aux émotions directes. Née en 1965 à Reykjavik en Islande, Björk grandit au sein d’une communauté hippie. Pour apprendre le piano et la flûte, sa mère l’inscrit en école de musique où elle découvre en parallèle de sa passion pour la pop des Beatles ou de Chaka Khan, la musique de Karlheinz Stockhausen ou Claude Debussy. Cet héritage entre cultures savante et populaire se cristallise en 1997 sur son album Homogenic, salué par la critique et le public comme l’une de ses plus grandes réussites. Son corpus d’albums ne saurait pour autant être résumé à la période des années 1990, la plus célébrée commercialement, puisque son évolution au XXIe siècle témoigne d’une vision esthétique en perpétuelle mutation et toujours inclassable. Les intervenant·e· sont invités à proposer une analyse critique de l’ensemble de l’œuvre de Björk.

18118-2018: Bicentenary of Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte's accession to the thrones of Sweden and Norway
Current state of research
Cette journée d’études entend appréhender l’accession aux trônes de Suède et de Norvège de Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte. Il s’agira de considérer cet événement à l’aune des renouvellements historiographiques entamés à l’université de Toulouse Jean Jaurès (UT2J) au sein du laboratoire Framespa il y a maintenant plus de dix ans, et d'en élargir le cadre aux autres universités françaises et à celles, plus lointaines, d'Europe du Nord. Les participants sont ainsi invités à replacer la personnalité et l’exercice du pouvoir par Bernadotte dans une historiographie plus large des bouleversements profonds que connaissent les États européens à la fin du XVIIIe et au début du XIXe siècles.

In high medieval Europe, conflict took a number of different forms, from large-scale battles, such as disputes over crowns, power and lands, to more local disputes over inheritance and property. In the absence of well-developed administrative structures which could limit conflict, cultural conventions, rituals and behavioural norms evolved to moderate violence within the elite community.

Northernness: concepts, representations, images
Ce colloque s’intéressera aux représentations du Nord dans la littérature et les arts européens. Il s’agira de comparer ces représentations chez les artistes et auteurs nordiques, mais aussi les autres Européens, et ainsi tenter de mieux cerner les différents concepts et modèles de nordicité. On s’interrogera sur les caractéristiques du concept pluriel de nordicité et sur la possibilité d’en retracer la généalogie, on s’intéressera aussi bien aux différents modèles de nordicité qui émergent au XIXe siècle qu’à leur évolution et leur transformation au cours des XXe et XXIe siècles.

Maritime Ivories in Western Europe, 900-1500
In the history of carved ivories, maritime mammals have often been eclipsed by the elephant, considered as a nobler ivory to which walrus or whale ivory would only be a poor man's substitute. But this historiographical view is not without its shortcomings, as not only did walrus hunting play a significant role in the first European explorations toward the west, but the trade for those ivories went as far as the Islamic world and even the Far East. This session at the 52nd International Congress on Medieval Studies, sponsored by the National Museum of Scotland, aims to address the variety of questions posed by the maritime ivories: how the raw material was collected, how it was traded, the workshops that carved them and their specific symbolic value in medieval treasuries

The North in the work of Xavier Marmier
Nombre de chercheurs issus de disciplines différentes se réfèrent encore aujourd’hui aux travaux de Xavier Marmier, pionnier des études germaniques et nordiques. Il représente donc un objet d’étude idéal dans le cadre d’un colloque interdisciplinaire réunissant des travaux de chercheurs de tous bords : histoire, géographie, littérature, philologie, culture, etc. Ce sera l’occasion d’étudier l’image que Marmier donne du Nord et de la confronter aux travaux de chercheurs contemporains. Les organisateurs font appel à des communications portant sur les territoires du Nord parcourus par Marmier, parmi lesquels l’Allemagne, les Pays-Bas, le Danemark, la Suède, la Norvège, l’Islande, et le Groenland.

The Colloquium is devoted to the history of fish, aquatic monsters and mammals in the northern seas (the English Channel, North Sea, Baltic Sea, Norwegian Sea, the North Atlantic), from antiquity to 1600. The colloquium is based on three themes: knowledge and the transmission of knowledge (medical knowledge, zoological knowledge, descriptions, identifications); savoir-faire and exploitation (aquatic farming, fishing, cooking, medicine); explorations – real and imaginary.

L'intérêt que la recherche historique récente porte à la notion de « l'espace » est étroitement liée aux changements politiques, économiques et culturels qui dépassent dans le contexte de la mondialisation les processus traditionnels d'identification et de structuration de l'État national. L'objectif du colloque présenté ici est d'analyser, au-delà des catégories traditionnelles de l'État nation, les conceptions et descriptions spatiales du passé qui se rapportent à la région de la Mer baltique et/ou la Méditerranée (ou à des espaces différement circonscrits tels le « Nord », le « Sud », le « Levant », etc.) tout en essayant de définir et de décrire ces espaces en tant que tels sur un plan historique, géographique et culturel.

Nordic and Germanic Space
The Kiel Treaty, signed on 14 January 1814, marks a milestone in European and Scandinavian history as it ended armed conflicts between the realms of Sweden and Denmark. In order to celebrate its 200th anniversary, this conference will focus on national propaganda and representations of power through the representation of the people. The period under study spans from the 14th century to 1814. It includes the Scandinavian realms’ stabilization as well as the emergence of a national sentiment centered on the homeland, the ruler or the reigning power and ends with the emergence of nationalism in Europe.

This workshop will explore the theme of Turkish political and cultural influence in the world, exploring scientific debates on the topic of “soft power” and its applicability to contemporary Turkey. This workshop aims at raising several questions: To what extent is the concept of “soft power” adequate to characterize Turkey’s influence and its weaknesses both on the international stage and towards its neighboring countries? Reciprocally, how can the analysis of the different patterns of Turkey’s influence help us question the concept of “soft power”, and to come up with other notions?

The Seventh Century: Continuity or Discontinuity?
The 2013 Edinburgh University Seventh Century Colloquium
We are pleased to announce a call for papers for the 2013 Edinburgh University Seventh Century Colloquium, 28-29 May 2013. The colloquium is a two-day interdisciplinary conference for postgraduate students and early career researchers. The colloquium brings together scholars from different disciplines studying the seventh century in order to promote discussion and the cross-fertilisation of ideas. We will explore how wider perspectives can be used to formulate new approaches to source material, drawing out fresh perspectives on both the familiar and unfamiliar. Our general theme will be an examination of whether the seventh century can be studied as a unit across regions or whether the period represents a break in the longue durée. What was the level of discontinuity between the "long sixth" and "long eighth" centuries? -

The Reformed Monastic Orders in North Europe 1100 to 1600
En 1113, David, le plus jeune fils de sainte Marguerite d’Écosse, établit à Selkirk dans le Sud de l’Ecosse une colonie provenant de l’abbaye de Thiron-Gardais fondée par saint Bernard de Ponthieu. Ce fut le premier établissement d’un ordre de type bénédictin réformé fondé dans les îles Britanniques. L’arrivée de ces moines continentaux marqua le début d’une ère de profonds changements religieux, politiques, culturels, sociaux et économiques dans les pays situés à la bordure septentrionale du monde christianisé, depuis l’Écosse et l’Irlande à l’ouest à travers l’Angleterre, la Scandinavie et l’Allemagne du Nord jusqu’en Pologne et l'Estonie à l’Est. Afin de célébrer le 900e anniversaire de cet événement, l’université de Stirling accueillera une conférence pluri-disciplinaire (du 10 au 12 juillet 2013) afin d’explorer l’impact monastique sur la culture et la société de l’Europe septentrionale du XIIe au XVIe siècle ainsi que son héritage moderne. -

Ding, ding, ting: Objects as cultural mediators. German, Dutch and Nordic language areas
Le colloque propose de croiser les fils de deux traditions théoriques, la théorie des transferts culturels, élaborée par Michel Espagne et Michael Werner dans les années 1980, qui a donné lieu ensuite à divers prolongements (histoire croisée, recherche sur les phénomènes de circulation, de réseau, d’interculturalité, d’hybridation…), et celle des Material Culture Studies.Il s’intéressera aux objets matériels, d’un point de vue historique, culturel, ethnologique, anthropologique, littéraire, linguistique, philosophique ou esthétique, dans leurs manifestations concrètes et leurs représentations discursives, visuelles, plastiques, ou textuelles, dans la mesure où ces objets circulent entre plusieurs cultures, entre deux pays (ou plus) des espaces néerlandophones, nordiques ou germanophones, du Moyen Âge à nos jours.
