  Processes of peace and transitional justice

  L’Institut universitaire Varenne (IUV) et l’Association francophone de justice transitionnelle (AFJT) organisent leur cinquième université d’été consacrée à la justice transitionnelle. Elle est destinée – au travers d’un thème – à former et sensibiliser les participants à l’ensemble des mécanismes judiciaires et extra-judiciaires permettant de traiter les violations massives et systématiques des droits de l’homme. Lors de l’édition 2018, l’université d’été aura pour thème « Processus de paix et justice transitionnelle ». Cette dernière sera donc analysée au prisme du contexte de sa mise en œuvre.

  Mass Culture : New Approaches, New Issues (19th and 20th centuries)

  After the 2016 edition, devoted to the links between media and politics from the French Revolution to today, the theme proposed this year is « Mass Culture: new approaches, new issues (19th and 20th centuries)”. Comparative and transnational approaches to archives and sources will allow us to investigate in new and innovative ways the idea of mass culture as an object of historical study. The school’s international dimension will encourage discussion between different historiographical traditions in the field, and comparisons among many historical contexts and regions. Methodological inquiries will be especially encouraged, in order to evaluate the contributions which, for example, the digital humanities or interdisciplinary approaches may offer.

  Quelles sont les conditions d'écriture d'une histoire globale localisée dans la densité des terrains et des tissus sociaux? Cet atelier doctoral entend aborder les enjeux de la réception d'un courant historiographique venu du monde anglo-saxon par les historiographies européennes au cours des vingt dernières années. Grâce à l'éclairage d'historiens spécialistes de la Méditerranée, de l'Afrique, de l'Amérique et de l'Asie, il s'agit de donner aux participants les clés pour comprendre les débats actuels et des pistes pour renouveler ces approches.

  Freedoms and Slaveries in the Atlantic World (14th-20th c.)

  STARACO Summer University (STAtus, ‘Race’ and Colour in the Atlantic World from Antiquity to the Present)

  Today, bibliography on the phenomenon of slavery in the Atlantic is incredibly vast.  However, our research group on the definition of hierarchies of colours and of "races" cannot avoid addressing this subject. It is clear that the deportation of millions of African captives towards the Americas constituted the most powerful impetus for the racialisation of slavery, leading to the ‘natural’ representation according to which all slaves are black. This simple equation, however, covers over a complex historical process that this research conference seeks to analyze more closely. We must begin by ‘denaturalizing’ the concept of slavery. The term slavery, in fact, includes situations that are very different in time and space, which the various specialists in our research network will be able to compare.

  Le département d’histoire de l’UQAM, avec la collaboration de l’équipe de recherche Montréal, plaque tournante des échanges : histoire, patrimoine, devenir et en partenariat avec Bibliothèque et archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ), offrira à l’été 2014 un cours intensif consacré à l’exploration des relations entre l’histoire et le numérique, avec Montréal comme laboratoire de recherche. Cette première édition de Montréal numérique approfondit la thématique « Temps et espace ».
