Summer School - History

An Environmental History of the Great War

We intend to bring together an international group of 20 to 30 graduate students working on military, cultural, social, and environmental history of the First World War from 2nd to 7th July 2018. Over the course of the week, they will have opportunity to get to know each other, but also a wide range of internationally recognized academic experts. Guided tours on excursions to French and Belgian sites are an integral part of the program and will enrich the participants' experience.

The Italians in Lyon: urban space, national identities and representations

Pendant un siècle (1860-1960), l’immigration italienne a constitué, une part majeure des flux migratoires vers l’agglomération lyonnaise. Aussi, son histoire, qui est encore largement à écrire, peut offrir de multiples points de vue pour mieux comprendre la place assignée aux immigrants dans l’espace urbain de l’agglomération lyonnaise et au sein du monde ouvrier, pour se pencher sur l’émergence et la construction des réactions de rejet et de violence qu’ils ont pu subir, et étudier les représentations multiformes dont ils ont été l’objet au cours de la période.

Si la première guerre mondiale a dévasté des millions de vies humaines, elle a aussi profondément bouleversé les territoires européens et leurs frontières, la perception et la représentation de ces espaces. Organisée à l’occasion de l’exposition « Été 14 : les derniers jours de l’ancien monde », cette journée d’étude tentera d’approfondir les dimensions sociales, culturelles et politiques, mais aussi les évolutions techniques de la représentation du territoire pendant le conflit. Comment la cartographie a-t-elle été mobilisée dans la préparation de la guerre, puis au cœur des opérations militaires ? Comment les cartes ont-elles participé à la propagande des États et des Empires, quelles formes de représentations destinées à la société civile ont-elles été mises en œuvre, par le biais de la presse notamment ? Comment, enfin, les cartes ont-elles contribué à faire émerger une nouvelle géopolitique ?

1914-1918. The war in maps

The 1rst World War dramatically affected societies and territories, as well as personal lives and all forms of culture, in Europe and elsewhere in the world. The 1914-1918 conflict had in all respects a foundational nature. On the occasion of the 1rst World War commemorations, and in connection with the exhibition, "Summer of '14: The Last Days of the Old World", which will be held at the French National Library from March 25 to August 3, the French Committee of Cartography organizes a conference specifically dedicated to the role of cartography in the war, according to three main issues : the role of maps during the preparation of the war, the use of maps on the theatre of military operations, the importance of the map in a civil society during the war.

Global Art History and the Peripheries

Established in 2009, Artl@s is a project of a Spatial (Digital) history of arts and letters, providing scholars with the tools and support needed in order to expound their narratives and qualitative evidence with spatial representations and quantitative analyses. The Artl@s team organizes an international conference in partnership with the École normale supérieure, the Institut national d'histoire de l'art and the Terra Foundation for American Art, inviting researchers to gather and develop a removed and well-thought out approach to the question of the peripheries in art history.
