  Spatiality in Japan

  Japarchi research network seminars, 2019-2020

  Le séminaire annuel « Spatialité au Japon » du réseau scientifique thématique Japarchi se poursuit en 2019. En s’intéressant à un ensemble de notions et de dispositifs fondamentaux de la culture spatiale du Japon, il s’inscrit dans la continuité de l’« encyclopédie ouverte » publiée en 2014 Vocabulaire de la spatialité japonaise. Les interventions prennent appui et se concentrent sur un terme ou une expression. Cette année les entrées thématiques proposées portaient sur : 1) la notion de paysage au Japon, 2) des termes désignant des lieux, moments, rituels associés à l’hospitalité et à sa spatialisation (architecture, ville, milieu rural, paysage, jardin), dans l’histoire et aujourd’hui, 3) la notion d’espaces publics au Japon et de l’ensemble des termes et expressions usuels propres à qualifier ces espaces et définir leurs usages, 4) la ville et l’architecture soutenables, 5) les mobilités urbaines 6) la rétraction urbaine 7) les effets du tourisme dans les espaces.

  New research on the History of Chinese gardens and landscapes

  Organised by Dr Jan Woudstra in conjunction with the Gardens Trust, the event will look at new discoveries in the field from both professionals and post-graduate students from around the world. Dr Alison Hardie will introduce the conference and outline the importance that Maggie Keswick’s 1978 book The Chinese Garden, History Art and Architecture has played in the subject. It is a unique opportunity to hear speakers from UK and International institutions to present their new research in the field. Talks will cover subjects as wide-ranging as Jesuit water landscapes, gardens as museums, Feng Shui symbolism and botanical watercolours.

  Identities and territories

  Au cours du XX^e siècle, les pays et les empires autoritaires, à l’économie planifiée et se revendiquant de l’idéologie communiste ont-ils développé un rapport particulier aux ressources naturelles, aux aléas et aux catastrophes, à l’environnement en général ? Comment les États et les sociétés qui en sont les héritiers font-ils face aujourd’hui à une crise environnementale devenue multiforme et globale : conséquences des catastrophes (Kychtym, Tchernobyl, Aral...) ; inégalités environnementales ; pollutions industrielles ; risques naturels et technologiques ; changement climatique, etc. ? À l’approche historique développée ces dernières années, s’ajoutera la volonté d’aborder ces territoires dans une double perspective, celle d’espaces socialement construits par des acteurs et des stratégies et celle d’espaces structurants pour l’action publique.

  Man and the desert

  Multidisciplinary conference in Wadi Rum (Jordan)

  The area of Wadi Rum in Southern Jordan was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a mixed natural and cultural site in June 2011. Scholars involved in the the preparation of the nomination file came to realise that scientific knowledge about the broader Wadi Rum area is scarce and does not do justice to the importance of the site, be it its natural or cultural dimensions. It also became apparent that there is a need to systematise research and documentation efforts, and provide technical advices to the relevant authorities for the monitoring and conservation of the natural and cultural heritage of the site. Man and the Desert: the First Multidisciplinary Conference on the Natural and Cultural History of Wadi Rum is expected to be the first of a series of conferences on the interactions between human communities and arid environments to take place every two years in Wadi Rum.
