Espace public / espace(s) privé(s) à la lumière des « printemps arabes »
À rebours des représentations officielles, médiatiques et néo-orientalistes de la division entre espace public/espace(s) privé(s), l’objectif de ce huitième colloque du Cercle des chercheurs sur le Moyen-Orient (CCMO) est d’analyser leurs chevauchements, leurs imbrications et interactions, voire leur caractère interchangeable : un espace privé étant susceptible à tout moment de se muer en espace public et inversement, un espace public pouvant épouser des logiques de privatisation et d’appropriation particulariste par un clan, une milice, une faction ou encore des groupes porteurs de causes spécifiques liées au genre, à la classe d’âge, à l’origine sociale ou encore à l’appartenance locale. Ce colloque invite à complexifier et à déconstruire cette opposition rigide entre espace public au singulier et espaces privés au pluriel, en interrogeant notamment la manière dont le politique se déploie dans des espaces privés ou semi-privés.

Populism: Theoretical Confusion, Contexts of proliferation and Comparative Experiences
Although most researchers unanimously agreed on the modernity of populism, this should in no way discourage us from further examining the implications of this phenomenon and its origins in ancient history. The search for the historical roots of populism, that some relate to early times, is only an attempt to establish its origin. However, the subsequent transformations of populism in meaning and practice have made it difficult to discern its limits. Apparently, this critical approach seems to be inaccessible due to many considerations, including the transformations of populism in terms of concept and practice to the point of almost losing its first forms. According to this approach, it is more likely that real beginnings of populism coincided with the emergence of modern democracy showing signs of deficiency.

The current state of moralisation in capitalism

Dans un contexte global où les inégalités économiques atteignent de nouveaux sommets et engendrent des perceptions d’injustices cruelles et insolubles pour les acteurs individuels et collectifs quel que soit leur pays, le capitalisme semble, aux yeux d’une grande majorité, entaché d’une immoralité croissante. Dans le même moment, les déclarations visant la moralisation du marché et de la finance se développent et s’intensifient dans une perspective qui viserait à atténuer les maux présents, sans être suivies d’effets concrets. Par cet appel à articles, L’Homme et la Société souhaite engager le débat sur les transformations présentes qui, sous couvert de moralisation du capitalisme, découragent, démobilisent et en fin de compte démoralisent les possibles vers une autre société.

1956-1958: A revolutionary period that changed Africa (and the world)
The objective of this panel is to compare the various social mobilizations that took place in Africa during the years 1956-1958 and which arguably constitute a historical watershed. The main aim of the panel is not the making of an abstract comparative analysis, but the analysis, based on the testimonial material collected, of how the memory of these events has been structured over time. Moreover, we are interested in understanding what the impacts of these social movements were on the structuring of states and what continuities can be found between the mobilizations of that period and the ary social mobilizations that have shaken the continent in the last ten years, from the ‘Arab Spring’ of 2011 onwards.

ICOFOM is proposing a symposium around two themes inspired by the process of renewing the definition of the museum and the major trends that contribute to transforming museums (Mairesse, 2015; 2016). These two central themes raise many questions about the primary mission of the museum. Decolonization is at the heart of the fundamental questioning of the social function of the museum. Consequently, these are the discourses, or even the myths of origin of the nations, that are contested.

Resistance to Order and Authority (ROAR)

Religion has served to legitimize political power, but it has also been a basis for resistance against order and authority. Be it the Maccabean revolt, Gandhi's practice of non-violence resistance, contemporary neo-pagan religions, or the counter-system movements portrayed by Mark Juergensmeyer in his 2001 book Terror in the Mind of God, religious beliefs have motivated people to reject social order that they deem as unjust, and possibly rise against it. Even in today’s secularized societies, religion has served as the ground for social movements and manifestations addressing pressing socioeconomic threats such as climate change, social inequality, authoritarian governments and minority discrimination. These observations have encouraged new trends in scholarly debate, especially regarding the emergence of alternative religious ideas and rituals in modern societies. old and new religious convictions legitimized various resistance movements among different communities? Which causes have influenced violent mobilizations against established social order, non-violent struggle, or the establishment of alternative community frameworks? What can these movements and ideas tell us about the role that religion plays today both in secularized and non-secularized societies?

Dans ce numéro d'Espaces et Sociétés, nous souhaitons analyser la dimension spatiale des obstacles et des stratégies visant à empêcher la mobilisation des classes populaires, que ce soit avant ou après que celle-ci prenne forme. La notion de démobilisation permet d’interroger de concert les pratiques qui contraignent ou empêchent l’émergence de l’action collective et les formes symboliques et matérielles visant à entraver et réprimer les mobilisations. On peut penser par exemple, d’un côté, aux stratégies de stigmatisation ou de délégitimation, aux pratiques paternalistes, clientélistes ou de cooptation ou, de l’autre, aux modes de répression, directs ou indirects, policiers ou judiciaires.

Localising democratic challenges. Assemblies, circulations and the imagination
Le pari de ce colloque est de saisir le double mouvement qui fait la complexité de l’épreuve démocratique : expérimentations et répression des alternatives citoyennes. La notion d’épreuve démocratique permet de penser à la fois les épreuves subies par la démocratie et les expériences par lesquelles elle fait la preuve de son existence sous des formes parfois renouvelées. Elle permet également d’interroger la place du conflit comme enjeu collectif, de s’attacher aux formes qu’il prend, de saisir les modalités de la mise en débat à différentes échelles et d’analyser les fragilités démocratiques des sociétés contemporaines. Localiser l’épreuve démocratique, cela signifie à la fois la repérer, la faire advenir en situation, l’actualiser et la « rendre locale », c’est à dire être attentif·ve·s aux propriétés des acteur·trice·s et des lieux.

The term ‘post-slavery’ has come into vogue as a catch-all for the complex timeline following the presumed abolition of slavery. In this special issue we wish to explore and question the concept through a focus on both visual and textual narratives of the afterlives of slavery, e.g. in literature, online (activist) platforms, human rights documentation, news-paper articles, pamphlets, films and theatre plays. We welcome both historical contributions on narratives of slavery following the abolition of slavery, as well as contributions demonstrating how past and present narratives have been used over time or are being used today.

Il ne s’agira cependant pas, en première intention, d’inviter les contributeurs à proposer une définition philosophique de l’éthique, mais plutôt à la considérer comme un champ de pratiques sociales protéiformes se désignant elles-mêmes comme relevant de l’ éthique. Que devons-nous et que voulons-nous faire de cette profusion des pratiques de l’éthique ? Quels rôles social et politique cette sphère de l’éthique est-elle en mesure de porter dans l'espace démocratique ?

Cet appel à contributions vise la publication d’un ouvrage collectif qui décrypte et analyse la paradiplomatie identitaire anglophone au Cameroun. En privilégiant une approche transversale, il est question d’interroger la manière dont, sur le plan international, les minorités anglophones s'organisent et se mobilisent au bénéfice de leur communauté. Les différentes contributions devront éclairer des problématiques telles que la conception et la mise en œuvre de la paradiplomatie identitaire ; les objectifs poursuivis ; les discours énoncés ; les acteurs impliqués ; les ressources mobilisées ; les contraintes existantes et les horizons de ces relations internationales.

Dialectics of Dread and Refuge

In A Grammar of the Multitude, Paolo Virno discriminates between the Kantian view of the dialectic of dread and refuge, which is based on a distinction between particular danger and absolute danger (also articulated by Heidegger through the distinction between fear and anguish) and the collapse of this distinction in the post-Fordist world, in which "the dividing line between fear and anguish, between relative dread and absolute dread, is precisely what has failed." (Virno 2004, 32) If post-Fordist institutions rely on a culture of pervasive dread – manifest as fear and anxiety – how do we resist this nearly intangible culture today? Arguably, we are moving beyond the sort of entrenched paralysis Virno speaks of, towards a new sort of political breakthrough, a manner of imagining life not determined by institutional cultures of fear and anxiety. Yet much thinking needs still to be done around the ways in which we engage in concerted resistance: do we fight within institutional walls – and if so, how do we resist systems of perpetual visibilisation – the gaze of securitization that renders us so exposed? What does this fight look like? Do we exit – and if so, where to? Is there a new underground?

Marx, Semiotics and Political Praxis
This special issue of Open Cultural Studies will return to the work of Karl Marx to reflect on and engage with his coherent articulation of words and their use, of words and actions, and of the intellectual and the political. The coherence of his discourse and praxis offers tools to think through, if not seek to transform, the alienated semiotic landscape of our times as described by the Frankfurt school philosopheers, Jean Baudrillard, Frederic Jameson, Sloterdijk and Slavoj Žižek. To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Marx's birth, in this special issue we want to honour his 11th Thesis on Feuerbach: "philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point, however, is to change it."

Amnis Review seeks to open up a reflection on the synergies that exist between war and political violence – both real and symbolic – and to ascertain to what extent the two phenomena are interlinked as well as how far they can be regarded as an essential area of research for gaining an understanding of the historical processes at work during a given period. To this end, Amnis proposes a long-term study focused on the contemporary period in order to analyse not only the impact of conflicts, such as the two world wars that left their mark on the 20th century, but also the consequences of the many civil wars, colonisation wars and the various other types of confrontations that have punctuated the history of European and American societies from the 19th century to the present.

Dans un prochain numéro thématique, qui paraîtra dans le courant de l’année 2018, la revue de sciences sociales Émulations (www.revue-emulations.net) se penchera sur la question de l’articulation entre les espaces nationaux et les dynamiques d’internationalisation. L’étude de ces rapports y sera envisagée dans le temps long, depuis la formation des États-nations au XIXe siècle jusqu’à nos jours. En outre, l’approche sera pluridisciplinaire et visera à explorer les différentes facettes de l’interaction entre États-nations et international, dans le cadre de la mondialisation croissante qui caractérise notre contexte actuel.
