Les chrétiens européens face à leurs passés embarrassants (du Moyen Âge à nos jours)
Les mémoires collectives semblent se focaliser avant tout sur des événements perçus de manière positive par les groupes porteurs de mémoire, en particulier dans le cadre des communautés chrétiennes. Témoignant de l’accomplissement d’un plan providentiel ou de la fidélité de croyants envers Dieu en dépit des difficultés, les faits mémorisés sont généralement honorables. Pour autant, certains actes commis par des chrétiens peuvent embarrasser leurs coreligionnaires des années ou des siècles plus tard. Cette journée d’étude, centrée sur le christianisme en Europe (et ses prolongements coloniaux), vise à explorer ces mémoires honteuses dans la longue durée, du Moyen Âge à nos jours.

Figures de veuves à l’époque moderne (XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles)
Images d’un statut social accepté, caché, revendiqué ?
Célèbres ou anonymes, il s’agira de questionner l’identité des veuves afin de mieux connaître leur influence politique, intellectuelle et sociale en cherchant à savoir si leur veuvage s’est révélé être un atout ou une faiblesse. Comment l’image de cette femme veuve s’est-elle développée au cours des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles ? Et comment a-t-elle fait face à la représentation rousseauiste d’une femme mère dédiée à son foyer et à l’éducation de ses enfants, valeur montante de la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle ? La journée d’études propose de mieux cerner la figure de la veuve dans les arts non seulement en France, mais aussi en Europe.

La vocation de cette journée interdisciplinaire est d'accueillir les contributions de chercheurs issus de disciplines telles que : littératures françaises et comparées ; histoire de la langue française ; littératures européennes non francophones : néo-latine, britannique, hispanique, italienne, portugaise, germanique... ; philosophie ; histoire ; histoire des sciences et des techniques...

Logics, stakes and limits of cultural heritage transmission in Eurasia
The thematic issue is about cultural heritage and patrimonialization. It aims at comparing the varying notions of “tradition” and “safeguarding of culture” within an empirical approach.We focus on conflicts about the creation of culture and how these globalised and specific contexts shape a changing self-perception of “ethnic identity” in Northern Asia, Central Asia and Eastern Europe.The articles may be on local as well as global expressions of cultural heritage: poetical genre, engraving or wood carving, architecture, ethno-parks or ecomuseums, cultural tourism, opposition to projects of valorization, etc. Analysis may also focus on the role of actors involved in local projects, on historical contexts or on international fashions.

Territorial imagery and the creation of a Dutch identity (1579-1702)
This two-day symposium aims to shed light on the ways in which Dutch depictions of national and transnational territories participated in the formulation of a shared identity. Multidisciplinary discussions will allow us to examine the terms of territorial imagery in Dutch visual culture, and their links with the formation of a national myth in the Early Modern Dutch Republic.

The Myth of Versailles and European Courts, 18th and 19th centuries
This symposium is organised in conjunction with the research programme “Court identities and the myth of Versailles in Europe: perception, adherence and rejection (18th-19th centuries)” led by the Centre de recherche du château de Versailles. The aim is to analyse the modus operandi of the myth of Versailles in the monarchic Europe of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, taking into account the two contradictory yet complementary elements that characterise the idea of myth: the real and the reconstruction of the real. The focus of this conference will therefore be twofold: understanding how the different aspects specific to the identity of Versailles have fuelled an illusion, but also discerning how this illusion gave rise to other accomplishments, whether architectural, ritual or political.

Second international conference, Midelt - Morocco (2020 edition)
Conçues pour combiner considération distanciée des réalités locales et ouverture au monde, les rencontres internationales de Midelt entendent promouvoir des formes de savoirs savants et profanes, ainsi que des échanges diversifiés pour mieux faire connaître l’espace local et ses dynamiques. Il s’agit de la sorte de mettre en discussion la culture et la vie sociale de la région de Midelt, d’une part en explorant ses multiples facettes et, d’autre part, en suscitant autant que possible des approches comparatives avec d’autres régions du monde. Les caractéristiques urbaines et rurales de la province, la présence de populations citadines et paysannes connaissant des conditions économiques très variées, autorisent de nombreuses interrogations et analyses sur les modes de vie, sur les pratiques culturelles au sens large et sur les sociabilités. Il est ainsi possible de s’intéresser à la parenté, aux activités socio-économiques, à l’éducation, par les différentes instances de socialisation (école, famille…). L’objectif est de mettre en perspective l’histoire locale pour tenter de saisir les mémoires des lieux et des collectifs (tribus, lignages …) afin de comprendre les permanences, les adaptations, les transitions dans de tels contextes.

Following in the footsteps of Fernand Braudel, an increasing number of recent studies show that the Mediterranean basin might be considered as a “borderland”, “borderscape” or “Frontier” suggesting that this area is not strictly a border between Christian and Muslim civilization, but a basin in which the two traditions and cultures meet and overlap, with an extraordinary variety of reactions to the hegemonic practices (acceptance, conflict, refusal, dissent). The aim of this conference is to bring together scholars who will discuss, from different perspectives and with a multidisciplinary approach, the variety of themes (topics) which revolve around the common issue of reflecting the problem of borderlands as a consequence of the encounter between Christendom and Ottoman Empire in the Early modern Mediterranean. The starting point of examination will be images, i.e. the usage of images (pictures, mental images, literary images and other visual representations …) as historical evidence.

The COST Action “Islamic Legacy: Narratives East, West, South, North of the Mediterranean (1350-1750)” [CA 18129] is launching a call for a conference “Soldiers, prisoners and converts between permeable borders in the Mare Nostrum (16th-18th centuries)”. The event that we are disseminating is being organised within this project, which as the purpose to provide a transnational and interdisciplinary approach capable of overcoming the segmentation that currently characterizes the study of relations between Christianity and Islam in late medieval and early modern Europe and the Mediterranean. We aim to create a network that will help to provide a comprehensive understanding of past relations between Christianity and Islam in the European context through the addressing of three main research problems: otherness, migration and borders.

"The grass is always greener" - gardens and politics
Franco-German histories, experiences and perspectives
Le CEREG (EA 4223) de l’Université de Nanterre, l’équipe de recherche « Mondes allemands » (EA 1577) de l’Université Paris VIII Vincennes Saint-Denis, l’Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Versailles et la fondation Fürst-Pückler-Park Bad Muskau organisent, du 14 au 16 mai 2020 un colloque franco-allemand sur le thème « “Sortir de l’enclos” : jardins et politique(s). Histoires, expériences et perspectives franco-allemandes ». Il s'agira de s’interroger sur les liens qu’ont entretenus, depuis le XVIIe siècle, les jardins avec la politique en France et en Allemagne, mais aussi d’examiner de récentes initiatives où le jardin, compris comme processus vivant, se transforme en lieu d’expression de la démocratie et de la citoyenneté. L’histoire des deux pays, parfois adverse et souvent intimement mêlée, incite en effet à tendre des miroirs pour révéler des mouvements et aspirations profondes des deux sociétés, étudier les contrastes et transferts mutuels, et croiser les études de terrain dans ce domaine encore peu exploré qu’est l'art comparé des jardins.

Music and Late Medieval European Court Cultures
Late medieval European court cultures have traditionally been studied from a mono-disciplinary and national(ist) perspective. This has obscured much of the interplay of cultural performances that informed “courtly life”. Recent work by medievalists has routinely challenged this, but disciplinary boundaries remain strong. The MALMECC project therefore has been exploring late medieval court cultures and the role of sounds and music in courtly life across Europe in a transdisciplinary, team-based approach that brings together art history, general history, literary history, and music history. Team members explore the potential of transdisciplinary work by focusing on discrete subprojects within the chronological boundaries 1280-1450 linked to each other through shared research axes, e.g., the social condition of ecclesiastic(s at) courts, the transgenerational and transdynastic networks generated by genetic lineage and marriage, the performativity of courtly artefacts and physical as well as social spaces, and the social, linguistic and geographic mobility of court(ier)s.

The Armenian language press in France and the creation of a transnational space
La Bibliothèque Nubar de l’UGAB (Paris) et l’université Paris-Diderot, avec le soutien du réseau Transfopress, réseau international prenant pour objet la presse allophone, et de la Bibliothèque universitaire des langues et civilisations (BULAC), s’associent pour organiser une journée d’étude sur le phénomène de la presse en langue arménienne comme presse allophone, en prenant pour terrain d’études la France. La presse allophone, entendue comme la presse écrite en langues autres que le(s) langue(s) officielles du pays où elle paraît, est un important phénomène transnational, tant dans sa dimension historique que contemporaine. Si la presse arménophone en diaspora a fait l’objet d’études disjointes, sur certaines périodes, ou dans certains pays (notamment la France), ce phénomène n’a pas véritablement fait l’objet d’une étude plus globale. Cette journée d’études se propose de resituer la presse arménophone publiée en France dans un cadre plus large, en s’interrogeant sur le rôle de cette presse dans la création d’un espace transnational ou d’espaces transnationaux.

Religion and State in the public sphere
Relations between religions and the State are well known to take multiple forms throughout the world. Some countries know an officially watertight separation between the two; others give a primary place to a given religion in the social order, to the exclusion of all others; others still have a State religion or established churches while at the same time guaranteeing freedom of conscience as well as forbidding any faith-based discrimination. Between the extreme of State atheism and the other extreme of a system explicitly based on the precepts of a given religion, the range of relations between Religion and the State is very wide. This interdisciplinary conference intends to describe and to analyse this diversity.

Insularities and enclaves in colonial and post-colonial circumstances
Crossings, conflicts and identitarian constructions (15th - 21st centuries)
Historically, archipelagos were considered as rehearsal spaces for new social constructions. Since colonization and, afterwards, colonialism and imperialism, many of them evolved in association with the strengthening of international networks, while others did not escape isolation and forced unequal integration in different spaces. On the other hand, enclaves were the outcome of historical circumstances, often externally decided, which prompted some degree of insularity regarding the immediate geographical surroundings. When those territories did not become independent, there were demands for autonomy or, at least, some underlying emancipatory and anti-colonialist feelings. Even when these feelings did not mobilize relevant segments of the population, they disclose the alterity – above all cultural – in regard to sovereignty.
