Between variability and singularity: crossing theoretical, qualitative and computer-based approaches to types and typologies in archaeology

Call for paper EAA 2021

This session is based on the ambition to revisit the "type" as an analytical and theoretical concept inorder to re-activate type-sensitive archaeological research or to develop genuine alternatives. We invite scholars from varying backgrounds to interrogate our apprehension of types, and to re-consider the basic explanatory value of types andtypologies, especially so vis-à-vis computer-based methods, emerging theoretical frameworks and, more generally, the consequences of such approaches and research frameworks for our understanding of types and typological thinking as core concepts ofarchaeological practice.

Second young researchers' conference in historical linguistics in Lyon

L’association lyonnaise Diachronies contemporaines, vouée à la promotion de l’activité scientifique des jeunes chercheurs en linguistique historique, organise les Deuxièmes rencontres lyonnaises des jeunes chercheurs en linguistique historique. Après une première édition dédiée spécifiquement aux langues gallo-romanes, cette seconde édition entend s’ouvrir également à l’étude des langues anciennes indo-européennes. L’objectif de l’événement est de permettre aux jeunes chercheur·ses travaillant sur l’histoire des langues anciennes et gallo-romanes de présenter leurs travaux et d’échanger à ce sujet. La forme de ces rencontres est celle d’un colloque traditionnel à la suite duquel des actes seront édités.

The person in question on networks - 5th RES-HIST conference

Cinquième rencontre RES-HIST

Pour cette cinquième rencontre, nous proposons que les contributeurs et contributrices de ces journées discutent une thématique précise : « La personne en question dans les réseaux ». Les travaux historiques qui mobilisent les techniques spécifiques d'analyse de réseaux envisagent en effet souvent dans leurs analyses des « personnes ». Dans la majorité de ces travaux, ces personnes – comprises comme des individus – interviennent en tant qu’entités (réseaux de correspondance, d’intellectuels et de savants, de marchands, d’évêques, de nobles ou de paysans, réseaux égocentrés), une démarche aujourd’hui intuitivement compréhensible par référence aux réseaux sociaux numériques (Facebook, Twitter, etc).

Ancient Greek and Roman painting and the Digital Humanities

When in 1921, A. Reinach published the Recueil des textes grecs et latins relatifs à la peinture ancienne (Recueil Milliet), it was mainly to make accessible these texts about painting and aesthetics to a broader audience. Since two years, a team gathered around the Perseus Digital Library and the Perseids Project (Tufts University) seek to revitalize the Recueil Milliet (an essential tool for historians of Greek and Roman Art) implementing it into a digitalized format (http://digmill.perseids.org/commentary). In relation to the work made, the proposed conference seek to question methodologies which combine Digital Humanities and scientific research, especially in the field of history of Greek and Roman art. But also, to put forward the relationship between textual sources and the most recent archaeological findings.

Semantic Web for Scientific Heritage

SW4SH 2016: Second International Workshop

Classicists and historians are interested in developing textual databases, in order to gather and explore large amounts of primary source materials. For a long time, they mainly focused on text digitization and markup. They only recently decided to try to explore the possibility of transferring some analytical processes they previously thought incompatible with automation to knowledge engineering systems, thus taking advantage of the growing set of tools and techniques based on the languages and standards of the semantic Web, such as linked data, ontologies, and automated reasoning. SW4SH 2016 aims to provide a leading international and interdisciplinary forum for disseminating the latest research in the field of Semantic Web for the preservation and exploitation of our scientific heritage, the study of the history of ideas and their transmission.

Encoding Data for Digital Collaboration (ASOR 2016)

Data encoding entails an analog-to-digital conversion in which the characteristics of an object, text, or archaeological site can be represented in a specialized format for computer handling. Once encoded, data can be stored, sorted, and analyzed through a variety of computer-based techniques ranging from specialized data-mining algorithms to user-friendly mobile apps. Especially when encoded data is open-source, researchers around the world can collaborate on the collection, encoding, and analysis of data.

Vitruvian machines

Roman engineering, texts, archaeology and reconstruction

L’équipe caennaise, depuis longtemps spécialisée dans l’étude des textes scientifiques et techniques, dans l’édition de Vitruve et la restitution virtuelle des machines de l’Antiquité propose une rencontre interdisciplinaire prenant appui sur le contenu de l’œuvre de Vitruve pour faire un point sur l’état des connaissances dans les domaines de l’ingénierie romaine. En amont du texte de Vitruve, il s’agit de comprendre comment s’est constitué le savoir mécanique romain, en aval, d’étudier l’évolution et l’importance de la mécanique romaine jusqu’à la fin du V^e siècle p.C. et, au-delà, de s’intéresser à l’influence de Vitruve sur les architectes-ingénieurs de la Renaissance. L’aire géographique prise en compte est celle de l’extension territoriale maximale de l’empire romain. Les communications porteront sur les textes (De Architectura, textes techniques, littérature « commune »), l’iconographie, les sources archéologiques (restes de machines et traces de leur emploi) et les restitutions qui peuvent en être proposées. « Restitution » est ici à prendre au sens large : descriptions techniques, dessins, maquettes physiques et virtuelles.

We warmly invite you to the EAGLE 2014 International Conference on Information Technologies for Epigraphy and Digital Cultural Heritage in the Ancient World. Hosted by EAGLE Europeana network of Ancient Greek and Latin Epigraphy, École Normale Supérieure and Collège de France, Chaire Religion, institutions et société de la Rome antique, it is the second in a series of international events planned by this European and international consortium. The conference will be held September 29-30 and October 1, 2014, in Paris. Keynote lectures will be delivered by Susan Hazan (The Israel Museum), Tom Elliott (New York University) and Thomas Jaeger (European Commission).

Networks in archaeology and history

Over the past decade "network" has become a buzz-word in many disciplines across the humanities and sciences. Researchers in archaeology and history in particular are increasingly exploring network-based theory and methodologies drawn from complex network models or social network analysis as a means of understanding dynamic social relationships in the past, as well as technical relationships in their data. This series of conferences aims to provide a platform for pioneering, multidisciplinary, collaborative work by researchers working to develop network approaches and their application to the past.
