The current state of natural law - from the vitality of doctrines to the unthoughts of positive law
De la vitalité des doctrines aux impensés du droit positif
À la différence de leurs homologues étrangers, rares sont les juristes français qui cultivent actuellement une référence au droit naturel dans leurs écrits. En France, les doctrines du droit naturel semblent être devenues un objet d’étude exclusivement passé dans le champ de l’histoire des idées politiques. On attribue souvent ce repli au triomphe du normativisme kelsénien qui incarnerait l’aboutissement de la neutralité axiologique, en proposant une science émancipée de tout ancrage métaphysique et théologique. À y regarder de plus près, on doit constater la formidable diversité, tant sur le fond que dans la méthode, des courants et des approches qui se cachent derrière cette appellation – à commencer par la distinction entre droit naturel « classique » et « moderne ». Peut-on véritablement considérer qu’une telle diversité, le plus souvent mal identifiée, a disparu – ou a-t-elle simplement pris de nouveaux visages en abandonnant une étiquette stigmatisante ? C’est ce que les travaux de cette journée d’étude chercheront à établir.

Violencia y política en Latinoamérica: instituciones, sociedad civil y conflictividad
Deuxième journée d’étude
Cette journée d'études portera sur les liens entre violence et politique dans l'Amérique latine contemporaine (XXe-XXIe). Nous nous proposons d'examiner le phénomène de la violence comme élément structurant du politique dans le sous-continent, qu'il s'agisse d'une violence d'« en haut » (contrôle, répression exercés par l'État), d'« en bas », sous une forme extrême ou diffuse. Nous nous interrogerons sur les modalités de manifestation et d'expression de la violence, ainsi que sur les buts qu'elle peut servir. Les transmutations de la violence à l'œuvre actuellement seront également analysées (porosité croissante entre violence politique et criminalité, débordement du cadre étatique, narcoétat).

Historiographical appraisals and research perspectives
Le 4 mars 2019, le pape François annonçait l’ouverture, prévue pour le 2 mars 2020, des archives vaticanes concernant le pontificat de Pie XII (1939-1958). Cette nouvelle a suscité l’attention de l’opinion publique internationale. Sur cette période très riche tant pour l’histoire politique, religieuse que culturelle de l’Europe et du monde, les perspectives s’annoncent vastes et aiguisent les appétits historiens. Dans ce contexte d’ouverture prometteuse, ce séminaire propose d’établir un état des lieux de l’historiographie abondante – et souvent polarisée – sur le pontificat du pape Pacelli, mais aussi d’identifier des pistes d’études, tout en nourrissant une dynamique collective de recherche.

Si Marseille et la Provence ont été l'objet de fort nombreuses investigations historiques, généralistes ou spécialisées, peu de travaux ont abordé de manière spécifique la question du développement des services sociaux et du travail social dans la région. Cette journée d'études se propose d'explorer les diverses formes qu'ils ont pu prendre et les différents acteurs et actrices qu'ils ont impliqués dans une histoire au long cours, allant de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle à la fin du XXe siècle.

Enhancing human in Europe: dream and nightmare of the interwar period
Number of historians and philosophers consider in general that transhumanism and its aim at enhancing the human through applied science and technology have their roots in the inter-war period: Julian Huxley, Jean Coutrot, John B.S. Haldane or John D. Bernal are indeed massively considered as the precursors of such ideas. But are they the sole references to mention when considering the inter-war origins of transhumanism, or are they just the tip of the iceberg of a broader current of thought emerging at that time? Such question immediately raises another one, which requires clarification : can current transhumanism(s) really be linked to the ideas emerging in the inter-war period ? The aim of the workshop will be first to check whether and how the idea of an enhanced human through technology intervention may have circulated in Europe during that time. Secondly, space will be given to look for pertinent criteria for the identification of a « transhumanism » of the inter-war period, by evaluating the nature of the indices which may be studied: mobilizing ideas, currents of thoughts, schools of thoughts, sociotechnical imaginaries, etc. Within these perspectives, the workshop will make possible comparisons between the different European contexts (England, France, Italy, Germany, Russia, etc.), and the several papers will help us to better understand the circulation of ideas, networks and human exchanges which contributed to forge the cradle of transhumanist ideas. Communications will be in French or in English.

Twenty years after the 1999 Reform Act was passed, this one-day conference will study the evolutions and transformations of the legislative and political abilities of the House of Lords in the British parliamentary system. Organised jointly by the MIMMOC (Université de Poitiers) and the CECILLE (Université de Lille), the conference will also adopt a comparative approach and we welcome submissions focused on the upper chambers of different countries.

The stranger as model - a source of inspiration and a vector for utopia in western Europe, from 1917
Ces deux journées d'étude qui se tiendront les 3 et 4 juin 2019 à l'Ens ont pour ambition de croiser des réflexions d'historiens et de politistes sur les enjeux de la représentation de l'étranger en modèle. Qu'il s'agisse de modèles politiques cités en exemple, de représentations valorisantes diffusées à des fins de propagande ou par des intellectuels, artistes ou simples militants sincèrement convaincus, les modalités de recours à un étranger idéalisé renvoient en réalité à une grande diversité de rhétoriques politiques. Les cultures politiques concernées sont également nombreuses, et nous souhaitons encourager des communications autour de la place que peut prendre le recours d'un modèle étranger dans les différentes idéologies ou stratégies politiques, le lien à la politique culturelle de certaines puissances, et les acteurs de ces transferts culturels.

Le Pôle de conservation des archives des associations de jeunesse et d'éducation populaire (PAJEP) organise une journée d’étude consacrée à l’histoire des mouvements d’Action catholique spécialisée qui s’adressent aux adolescents et aux jeunes hommes et femmes (Jeunesse étudiante chrétienne, Jeunesse indépendante chrétienne, Jeunesse maritime chrétienne, Jeunesse ouvrière chrétienne, Mouvement rural de la jeunesse chrétienne). Cette manifestation, qui porte sur la période 1965-1979, est le prolongement d’une première journée d’étude, traitant du même sujet, pour la période antérieure (1945-1965). Elle se tiendra à Paris à l’automne 2019.

Theme week of the "Health" interdisciplinary research program at the EHESS
L’école thématique pluridisciplinaire qui se tiendra dans la région parisienne (lieu encore à déterminer), du 29 octobre au 2 novembre 2018 sera l’occasion d’approfondir les réflexions en cours sur ces différentes dimensions. Elle s’attachera en particulier à croiser des perspectives généralement envisagées de manière indépendante, comme celles qui concernent la naturalisation des origines humaines, des différences de genre, ou des comportement. L’attention portée aux thématiques nouvelles ou émergentes se combinera avec un souci de formation des jeunes chercheurs (doctorants et post-doctorants) et d’intensification des échanges entre les collègues français et étrangers.

The Agreements of the Holy See with States (19th-21st Centuries)
Models and Transformations, from Confessional States to Religious Freedom
This conference will explore the international legal agreements signed between the Holy See and individual states, which often but not always took the form of concordats and similar conventions. Its central focus will be to examine these conventions in light of diplomatic practices, as well as in relation to the political and religious dynamics of the nineteenth through the twenty-first centuries, notably the principles and requirements that comprised modernity. This entails assessing the historical evolution of the typology, method, content, scope, and spaces concerned.

This is a one-day workshop on the plurality of reconciliation practices in post-conflitc societies. What various meanings are assigned to the word ‘reconciliation’ in the different communities where such initiatives have been implemented? How may conflicting interests or views be reconciled? The organisers also wish to study the influence of historical factors, and assess how the accounts of those seeking reconciliation have evolved over time. An analysis of past initiatives will also be relevant. Finally, a distinction between nationally and locally devised initiatives may be made to better assess the policies implemented, their sustainability, and their impact on the local communities. This is a cross-disciplinary workshop and submissions by researchers in Humanities or Political and Social Sciences will be welcome.

La revue Études Corses, en partenariat avec le Centre de la Méditerranée moderne et contemporaine (Université de Nice – Sophia Antipolis) et l’UMR-Lisa (Lieux, Identités, eSpaces et Activités, Université de Corse – Pascal Paoli), organise une journée d’étude autour des évènements de mai 1958 en Corse, afin d’éclairer des lumières de la recherche récente un épisode méconnu de l’histoire de la Quatrième République et de la guerre d’Algérie. Pour comprendre le ralliement apparent des autorités civiles et militaires de l’île au pouvoir insurrectionnel d’Alger, dans le cadre de l’opération Résurrection, cette journée d’études propose de revenir sur les rapports entre la France, la Corse et l’Algérie durant la période de la décolonisation, sur la contribution insulaire à la séquence plus générale qui voit la chute de la Cinquième République et l’avènement du régime gaulliste, et enfin sur les conséquences locales de ces évènements dans la période immédiatement postérieure à 1958.

Résolument interdisciplinaire, il vise à étudier les "moments critiques" conduisant à l’institutionnalisation de l'ESS, soit à des réarrangements institutionnels où la société civile organisée de l'ESS assume des fonctions médiatrices entre la politique, l'économie et le social.

Corporate authority in the shaping of public policy
The power of corporate business has been a subject of intense debate and many social science studies since the 19th century. This conference is based on the idea that, not only has this power varied among industries, countries and different periods, but also that the way in which it is wielded has evolved over time. By bringing together scholars from various backgrounds within the fields of history, sociology, and political science, we intend to provide new insights on the multiplicity, depth and limits of the forms of influence that corporations, or the organizations furthering their interests – business associations, think tanks, communication or public relations agencies, foundations, etc. –, have on public policy.

An exceptional contribution to the legal protection of human rights
En 2016-2017 l’Autriche et la Hongrie fêtent le 150e anniversaire du compromis constitutionnel de 1866-67. La Constitution adoptée à l’époque a créé un cadre pour un développement rapide de la monarchie constitutionnelle et la construction de l’État de droit. Les premières cours modernes pour la protection des droits fondamentaux (Reichsgericht, Verwaltungsgerichtshof) ont été créées. Vienne et Budapest se sont alors retrouvées dans une situation exceptionnelle. Pour rendre hommage à tous ceux qui ont contribué à cet essor exceptionnel du droit moderne, il est proposé d’organiser un colloque pluridisciplinaire (droit public, histoire du droit, théorie du droit, droit comparé, droits de l’Homme) à Strasbourg.

Actualities and new perspectives in social science research
Homelessness, has been recognized as a public problem, not only by international organizations, but also by the national and local authorities from many countries. Homelessness became also a scientific problem. Many generations of researchers conducted inquiries among homeless people. They analysed the phenomenon of homelessness in a longer history of the treatment of poverty in the occidental societies. They were also able to describe the survival on the streets, the different configurations of support, the social violence against homeless people, the construction of social problem during different eras, etc. This congress wishes to offer a space for exchange in order to develop new perspectives in the field of homelessness research.

As a band who has garnered critical and commercial success without forsaking their taste for musical experimentation and subversive, yet poetic, lyrics, Radiohead offer multiple facets to their listeners and to popular music scholars alike. Nevertheless, only a handful of academic studies have, to this day, been devoted their work, including The Music and Art of Radiohead (Tate, 2005).
