The French cinematic operetta, from "Chemin du Paradis" to Mariano's grande finale (1930-1970)
"A great operetta needs a great finale"
À l’occasion du cinquantième anniversaire de la mort de Georges Van Parys, nous souhaitons consacrer un colloque à l’opérette cinématographique (parfois aussi appelée « opérette filmée », « film-opérette », « opérette à grand spectacle »...), genre dans lequel le compositeur s’est particulièrement illustré. Le colloque se tiendra à Paris, au centre de Clignancourt et à la Maison de la Recherche, les 12 et 13 novembre 2021. On se posera la question du genre de l'opérette cinématographique - ses œuvres emblématiques, les grandes collaborations, ses enjeux socio-historiques, les raisons de son succès comme de son déclin, les influences (allemandes, hollywodiennes) – à partir d'angles divers (musicologie, histoire du cinéma, d'histoire de l'art, etc.).

Trans Identities in the French media
Abstracts are welcome for an edited volume that will address the question of the representations of trans identities in the French media. This volume aims more specifically at observing how trans identities have been portrayed in the past decades (from the 1990s’ to the present time). Possible topics include (but are not limited to)(a) the evolution of the representation of trans identities in news coverage, (b) transgender characters in films and series, (c) pitfalls and biases regarding the way trans identities are portrayed in the French media, and/or (d) the analysis of a specific body of work.

The world history of filmed news during the second half of the 20th century
Cette journée d’études a pour objet de faire un bilan sur l’histoire des actualités cinématographiques dans le monde pendant la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Elle est associée au projet ANTRACT consacré à l’analyse transdisciplinaire des journaux de la société de presse filmée Les Actualités Françaises (1945-1969), entreprise d’État qui a produit pendant près d’un quart de siècle plus de 20 000 sujets d’actualités destinés au public des salles de cinéma françaises et étrangères. Organisée autour de communications et d’échanges interdisciplinaires, cette rencontre s’inscrit dans une double perspective de recherche historique et technologique.

Peripheries, Minorities and Taboos in the films of Marcel Łoziński, Pál Schiffer and Želimir Žilnik
The international conference bears a transdisciplinary outlook as it cross-references a variety of scientific fields (history of cinema, aesthetics, philosophy, history, political science, anthropology, sociology, etc.). A film retrospective of documentary films will be held at the Cinémathèque du documentaire (Centre Pompidou, Paris), as well as screenings followed by debates and panel discussions at Inalco in the presence of the filmmakers Marcel Łoziński and Želimir Žilnik.

"All Alone" in East-Central Europe: Reinventing the Orphan from the Fascist to the Socialist Era
International PhD Contract 2020-2023
Full-time, 36-month-long international PhD contract at Sorbonne University (PhD program IV) within the research centre Eur'ORBEM and in partnership with the French Research Centre in Social Sciences (CEFRES) in Prague, from 1 October 2020, under the supervision of Clara Royer. The PhD thesis may be written in French or in English. PhD propositions should focus on the discourses and practices surrounding the orphan condition in literature and/or visual arts (cinema, photography, graphic arts and so forth) in the wake of the violence and demographic upheavals that characterized 20th century East-Central Europe. Because of its interdisciplinary scope, applicants with a background in social history, literary studies and/or visual arts specialized in one or several countries of East-Central Europe may apply.

Image, Cinema & Politics: the Avant-Garde Dilemma in the Interwar Period (1918-1936)
In this publication we would like to explore the relation between the post-1918 crisis of the liberal system and the use of art and image as political media including its nationalist, gender and class discourses since they reflect the political and economic transformations of the post-war years. Art and cinema allow us to observe processes such as accelerated urbanisation, electrification and the automobile revolution, the incorporation of women into the waged- labour market or class struggles, all of which fed the insecurity and anxiety of industrialised societies which sought shelter in growing protectionism and corporatism.

Writing, drawing and translating artificial intelligence in science fiction
From a transcultural perspective, this international workshop will look into some representations of Artificial Intelligence in Japanese and Chinese science fiction (SF) to shed light on the on the creative ways with which non-Anglophone science fiction envisions the social / cultural / economical / political impacts of AI development. It will examine Japanese and Chinese SF works – (translated) literature and manga – as well as some technological and political discourses on AI, to delineate possible alternative ways to approach the posthuman imagination.

Towards Transatlantic and Transdisciplinary Approaches to Black Counter-Representations, from 1945 until Today
The central goal of this conference lies thus in the investigation of the multiplicity of visual representations produced by the Black population and diaspora between France and the United States in the second half of the 20th century. In particular, we invite researchers to focus on productions which have challenged—directly or indirectly—the traditional canon for Black representations. Of particular interest in this conference are examples demonstrating a visual/ideologic rupture with depreciative models that permeated the public imagination in the West, whether they be positive counter-models or new visual representations aiming to critically subvert formerly pejorative representational frames.

Women behind the camera in family films
La journée d’études « Tuer les pères : Femmes derrière la caméra dans les films de famille » propose une réflexion collective autour des images d’amateur tournées en famille. En affirmant et en perpétuant l’institution familiale dans sa configuration patriarcale, nucléaire et hétérosexuelle, le film de famille a contribué à reproduire les codes et les hiérarchies de genre et de sexualité de la société bourgeoise. En concevant le cinéma d’amateur comme une « technologie de genre », les communications porteront sur les images réalisées par des femmes-amatrices afin de découvrir et décortiquer leur propre « regard familial ».

The theatre of science-fiction: the first elements of cartography
Dans ce numéro de la revue ReS Futurae, il s’agira d’interroger l’histoire de la science-fiction (SF) au théâtre depuis le XIXe siècle au moins et de réfléchir à l’historiographie du théâtre de science-fiction en France et à l’étranger, en interrogeant les catégories génériques actuellement en usage avec lesquelles le théâtre de science-fiction voisine et/ou que le théâtre de SF subsume (utopie/dystopie, post-apocalypse, etc.). Sur la base d’études de cas, l’ambition est d’assembler les premiers éléments utiles à une cartographie du théâtre de science-fiction.

7th biennial conference of the Réseau européen de recherche sur l'avant-garde et le modernisme
Dans la recherche sur l’avant-garde et le modernisme une des notions clés est celle de crise. Tout au long de leur époque, les avant-gardistes et les modernistes ont été confrontés à des crises, qu’elles soient économiques ou politiques, scientifiques ou technologiques, esthétiques ou philosophiques, collectives ou individuelles, locales ou mondiales, à court ou à long terme. À leur tour, les modernistes et avant-gardistes ont été continuellement accusés d’avoir provoqué des crises, qu’elles soient artistiques ou culturelles, sensorielles ou conceptuelles, accidentelles ou intentionnelles, ayant une grande portée ou une plus négligeable, provocant des crises de représentations ou autres. Les notions mêmes « d’avant-garde » et de « modernisme » sont sans cesse le sujet de et soumises à des crises conceptuelles, laissant la recherche sur l’avant-garde et le modernisme au bord d'une crise théorique aussi perpétuelle qu'autodestructrice.

Jijé before Jerry Spring (1914-1954)
The eclectic vocations of a master of graphic novels - Christianity, humour and adventure
Cette journée, qui sera la première journée d’étude sur Jijé à l’université, se focalisera sur la première moitié d’une carrière en bande dessinée, où l’auteur expérimenta la bande dessinée chrétienne, la veine humoristique, ou encore la BD d’aventure. On abordera la formation graphique de Jijé, depuis l’École des Métiers d’Art de Maredsous, et l’évolution de ce style dans ses bandes dessinées avant Jerry Spring. On évoquera également les débuts de Jijé aux éditions Dupuis, notamment les circonstances de sa reprise de la série titulaire du journal à côté de ses autres bandes dessinées dans Spirou. On situera aussi l’importance de Jijé en tant que père fondateur de la bande dessinée chrétienne francophone, depuis l’énorme succès de sa biographie de Don Bosco. La journée d’études sera conclue par une cérémonie, à l’occasion de la réception de la donation qu’Yves Félix, professeur émérite à l’UCLouvain, a faite aux Archives du monde catholique (ARCA).

Tele(visualising) health: TV, public health, its enthusiasts and its publics
Televisions began to appear in the homes of large numbers of the public in Europe and North America after World War II. This coincided with a period in which ideas about the public’s health, the problems that it faced and the solutions that could be offered, were changing. The threat posed by infectious diseases was receding, to be replaced by chronic conditions linked to lifestyle and individual behaviour. Public health professionals were enthusiastic about how this new technology. TV offered a way to reach large numbers of people with public health messages; it symbolised the post war optimism about new directions in public health. But it could also act as a contributory factor to those new public health problems.

Le Centre d'étude des arts contemporains (CEAC) organise un colloque international intitulé L’œuvre multipliée au prisme de la collection et de l’archive. Cette manifestation constituera un rendez-vous important pour la communauté scientifique française et européenne impliquée dans la théorisation et la pratique de l’œuvre multipliée contemporaine. Ce colloque s’inscrit dans une volonté de mettre à jour plus spécifiquement les pratiques de la collection et de l’archive au sein du multiple et des éditions d’artistes (livres, affiches, disques, vidéos, éditions électroniques, etc.).

The emergence of video art in Europe: Historiography, theory, sources and archives (1960-1980)
À ce jour, à l’échelle de l’Europe, une histoire de l’art vidéo demeure donc à faire. C’est la mission à laquelle le présent programme de recherche entend répondre. Un réseau international, regroupant à la fois des historiens de l’art et de l’image en mouvement, des artistes, des protagonistes de cette aventure, des dépositaires de fonds d’archives, des conservateurs et de jeunes chercheurs, s’est constitué. Il a pour objectif de collecter des données sur les artistes, les œuvres et les événements qui ont permis l’avènement de cette pratique, ou qui ont compté dans son développement sur le territoire européen, et de mettre au jour les conditions nationales spécifiques de production et de diffusion permettant d'expliquer la variété des productions comme la disparité des périodes d'émergences (1960-1980).

Dans le cadre du projet « TRANSARCHIVES - Pratiques d’archivage et patrimonialisation du film : rencontres transcontinentales du passé et du présent », soutenu par la Fellowship Européenne Marie Sklodovska Curie, nous vous invitons à une séance et à une journée d’études qui visent à analyser les interactions entre la France et l’Amérique latine à travers le cinéma. Les intervenant se concentreront sur différentes périodes et situations clés telles que : les réalisateurs sans frontières qui ont travaillé des deux côtés de l’océan atlantique, la période révolutionnaire des années soixante et soixante-dix, les visions des critiques cinématographiques clés et aussi les enjeux contemporains liés à la circulation du cinéma latino-américain en France et du cinéma français en l’Amérique latine.

Tele(visualising) health: TV, public health, its enthusiasts and its publics
The conference aims to bring together scholars from different fields (such as, but not limited to, history, history of science, history of medicine, communication, media and film studies, television studies) working on the history of television in Great Britain, France and Germany (West and East) (the focus of the ERC BodyCapital project), but also other European countries, North and South America, Russia, Asia or other countries and areas. Papers might focus on one national, regional or even local framework. Considering the history of health-related (audio-) visuals as a history of transfer, as entangled history or with a comparative perspective are welcome. The organizers welcome contributions with a strong historical impetus from all social and cultural sciences.

The creation, reception and circulation of the figures of otherness in the cinema of fiction
Exoticism in countershot workshop
Cet atelier, regroupant plusieurs approches disciplinaires sur le cinéma, se propose de réfléchir à la notion d’exotisme dans les films de fiction. Il est l’occasion de revenir aux textes conceptualisant cette notion (en peinture et en littérature notamment), et de les confronter à diverses cinématographies européennes ou extra-européennes. L’enjeu est de multiplier les points de vue dans une dynamique de champ-contrechamp. Nous prendrons à bras-le-corps la question de l’exotisme dans le cinéma de fiction pour en faire un objet d’histoire culturelle, en faisant aussi appel à d’autres disciplines (anthropologie, esthétique, histoire des formes). Une analyse des rapports entre exotisme et cinéma peut nourrir les réflexions des sciences humaines et apporter des éléments de compréhension de ce « fait social total » qu’est le cinéma.

Excess? Images of body, health, morality and emotions across the media
A central goal of the workshop is to open up an international exchange and to connect perspectives from the history of science, the history of emotions, the history of the body and media history in order to shed new light on a history of health as a cultural history. The event is part of the research project “The Healthy Self as Body Capital: Individuals, Market-Based Societies, and Body Politics in Visual Twentieth Century Europe” funded by the European Research Council under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (Advanced Grant agreement No 694817) led by Christian Bonah (University of Strasbourg) and Anja Laukötter (Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Berlin).
