  Violence in Plato’s philosophy

  Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence (Special Issue)

  The Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence (PJCV) is seeking articles dealing with philosophical issues that arise in connection with the conception of conflict and violence within Plato’s philosophy. Conflict and violence are often regarded as two of Plato’s main interests in his political thought, especially when he discusses the dread and danger they bring to the city. However, is it possible to understand conflict and violence in Plato’s work only from this political and rather pejorative standpoint? It is possible to see conflict and violence in Plato’s philosophy as something else, rather than a threat to the harmony of the community?

  What the Mediterranean means to us?

  Tête-à-tête journal n°9 (Fall 2018)

  Dire de la Méditerranée qu’elle est un creuset est un poncif ; dire qu’elle est un carrefour une évidence. Et pourtant, depuis que son nom même convoque dans la conscience collective les bateaux échoués ou la paupérisation croissante de pays déchirés par la guerre ou ravagés par la crise, elle semble avoir changé de visage. En quoi la Méditerranée résonne-t-elle en nous ? Comment pouvons-nous incorporer son legs pour construire une relation au monde actuel. Plutôt que d’en faire un concept ou une marque, que la langue en fasse un verbe.

  The Notion of Intelligence in Ancient Greece (nous-noein), from Homer to Platonism

  Vol. 16 Methodos (2016)

  The aim of this issue of Methodos is to gather contributions of international scholars on the notion of nous-noein in order to reconstruct the history of the terms related to intelligence and its activities. The issue will mainly try to outline the evolution of such terms, from their original perceptual meaning to their conceptual and theoretical scope. Contributions should thus provide materials and analysis to identify the stages and ruptures in the evolution of their use. Additionally, all attempts to trace the technical and cultural transformations which have allowed the passage from the practical understanding of the nous-noein to its more abstract uses are welcome. Papers should by no means be limited to genetic or historical reconstructions; we also welcome any paper bringing some new elements of reflection on the notion of intelligence in the chosen era.

  VIth Mediterranean Congress of Aesthetics

  Facts and Values in Aesthetics: Contemporary Stakes and Approaches

  In a text entitled The Collapse of the Fact/Value Dichotomy and Other Essays (2004), Hilary Putnam argues convincingly against a classic opposition which does not serve philosophical reflection positively. Putnam’s analysis mostly focuses on the theory and practice of knowledge, but one can legitimately extend it to other fields, starting with that of aesthetics, which sooner or later is confronted with the question of whether one defends or rejects the dichotomy. Keeping or rejecting it implies reasons to do so, but often these reasons remain implicit, most especially in aesthetics.

  Langues, cultures et médias en Méditerranée : diversité, variation, pratiques et représentations

  Organisé pour la première fois au sud de la Méditerranée, en mai 2010, par l’équipe de recherche « Culture, médias, identité » (ERCMI), le colloque « Langues et médias en Méditerranée » relance sa seconde édition à Ouarzazate sous la thématique « Langues,cultures et médias en Méditerranée : diversité, variation, pratiques et représentations ». Il aura lieu à la faculté polydisciplinaire de Ouarzazate (Université Ibn Zohr-Agadir) du 15 au 17 octobre 2012. Ce colloque bisannuel permet aux chercheurs s’intéressant à la diversité, aux variétés et variations des langues, des cultures et des médias, d’échanger leurs idées, de partager les résultats de leurs travaux liés aux notions de diversité, de variation, de pratiques et de représentations dans les écrits, les discours et les moyens de transmissions. Il constitue un lieu où peuvent se discuter les apports de la recherche en sciences humaines et sociales - notamment la linguistique, la sociolinguistique, l’anthropologie, la sociologie, l’ethnologie culturelle, la psychologie, la psychologie sociale, la philosophie, les sciences de l’information et de la communication et les autres domaines connexes - à la compréhension des mécanismes sous-jacents à la production du sens et de sa circulation dans l’espace méditerranéen à travers l’usage des langues et des médias.
