  Espace public / espace(s) privé(s) à la lumière des « printemps arabes »

  À rebours des représentations officielles, médiatiques et néo-orientalistes de la division entre espace public/espace(s) privé(s), l’objectif de ce huitième colloque du Cercle des chercheurs sur le Moyen-Orient (CCMO) est d’analyser leurs chevauchements, leurs imbrications et interactions, voire leur caractère interchangeable : un espace privé étant susceptible à tout moment de se muer en espace public et inversement, un espace public pouvant épouser des logiques de privatisation et d’appropriation particulariste par un clan, une milice, une faction ou encore des groupes porteurs de causes spécifiques liées au genre, à la classe d’âge, à l’origine sociale ou encore à l’appartenance locale. Ce colloque invite à complexifier et à déconstruire cette opposition rigide entre espace public au singulier et espaces privés au pluriel, en interrogeant notamment la manière dont le politique se déploie dans des espaces privés ou semi-privés.

  Articuler l’histoire sociale et environnementale

  Proche-Orient, Maghreb, Afrique (XIXe-XXIe siècle)

  Cette journée d’étude a pour objectif de rassembler des historien-ne-s contemporanéistes spécialistes du Proche-Orient, du Maghreb et de l’Afrique travaillant dans une optique environnementale. Si la trame politique globale de l’histoire moderne et contemporaine de ces régions est bien connue (domination impériale ottomane ou monarchique locale, tutelle coloniale européenne, accession à la souveraineté nationale), les dynamiques sociales, juridiques et environnementales sont sous-documentées. Cette rencontre ambitionne de renforcer les liens entre des « aires » habituellement séparées tout en englobant une diversité de zones climatiques et d’écosystèmes, des côtes méditerranéennes aux forêts tropicales, en passant par les milieux désertiques. Afin de permettre un dialogue heuristique, il s’agira de réfléchir plus particulièrement aux manières d’articuler histoire sociale et environnementale, à partir de cas précisément situés et dans une approche comparatiste attentive aux sources mobilisées.

  Power(s) in Palestine

  Over the past two decades a great deal of research on the question of Palestine has pointed to a fragmentation of the Palestinian political landscape, divisions exacerbated by the Oslo Accords. The ensuing establishment of the Palestinian Authority (PA), in particular, fostered the emergence of new political dynamics and new sources of power and legitimacy, embodied in the conflict between Fatah and Hamas that has dominated Palestinian politics since 2007. The creation of the PA also encouraged a process of capital accumulation and a restructuring of social classes after 1993. Moreover, the dispersion of Palestinians across the world, the superposition of national and international legal realities and the diversity of actors in the conflict have contributed to the multiplication of sources and resources of power. This complex set of factors has prompted questions regarding new sources, mechanisms and flows of power in Palestine, as well as resultant dynamics.

  What art does to the city in the Maghreb and the Middle East

  Artistic practices, the expression of politics and transformations of public space

  Ce numéro thématique et interdisciplinaire de Manazir Journal a pour objectif de réunir des travaux explorant le « faire art » dans l’espace public urbain en Afrique du Nord et au Moyen-Orient. Qu’ils soient visuels ou performatifs, les arts urbains (tags, graffitis, street art, fresques murales, performances, spectacles vivants, sculptures ou installations dans l’espace public, etc.) occupent depuis une dizaine d’années, une place grandissante dans la production artistique. La scène du graffiti et du street art s’est notamment étendue, à la faveur des « Printemps arabes » ; chaque année, les inscriptions murales se multiplient, de nouveaux centres d’art urbain apparaissent et des festivals entièrement dédiés au street art s’organisent. Ces initiatives font progressivement de la ville une galerie à ciel ouvert, contribuant au renouvellement des formes d’expression du politique dans l’espace public, et aux transformations de l’espace urbain.

  Another definition of otherness?

  Cet atelier souhaite déplacer la question sur l’orientalisme, souvent lu au masculin, pour se demander s’il existe un orientalisme féminin, construit à la même époque, par les voyageuses, les archéologues et les ethnologues femmes qui ont aussi visité ces lointaines contrées et dont les écrits moins connus, moins cités et surtout, beaucoup moins étudiés, offriraient peut-être un regard différent sur cette altérité particulière. Les voyageuses occidentales qui sont elles-mêmes en périphérie du centre constitué par les auteurs de sexe masculin détiendraient-elles une représentation de l’Orient plus libre ? Les schémas narratifs par lesquels se dit l’altérité orientale varient-ils significativement en fonction des genres ? Si oui, pourquoi et comment ?

  1956-1958: A revolutionary period that changed Africa (and the world)

  The objective of this panel is to compare the various social mobilizations that took place in Africa during the years 1956-1958 and which arguably constitute a historical watershed. The main aim of the panel is not the making of an abstract comparative analysis, but the analysis, based on the testimonial material collected, of how the memory of these events has been structured over time. Moreover, we are interested in understanding what the impacts of these social movements were on the structuring of states and what continuities can be found between the mobilizations of that period and the ary social mobilizations that have shaken the continent in the last ten years, from the ‘Arab Spring’ of 2011 onwards.

  Towards a New Social History of Sudan

  Cette conférence, qui est également un programme de recherche, souhaite remettre au centre de l’histoire moderne et contemporaine du Soudan les « gens ordinaires ». Nous souhaitons également nous intéresser à tous les thèmes liés à l’histoire des gens « exceptionnellement normaux » (Grendi 1977) : le quotidien, les croyances, les horizons et désirs, dans toute leur diversité selon classe sociale et origine, mais aussi dans tous leurs liens et circulations. Même si la microhistoire a surtout marqué l’historiographie européenne, elle a inspiré aussi des nombreuses études en histoire du Moyen Orient et de l’Afrique (voir l’historiographie de l’Afrique du Sud). Elle a aussi des affinités avec des historiographies non-européennes comme les Études subalternes (malgré leurs différences reconnues). Nous croyons que le croisement de ces approches ne peut que mener à une meilleure connaissance des acteurs et actrices « ordinaires ».

  Urban and architectural identities in Mediterranean cities

  Identités urbaines et architecturales dans les villes méditerranéennes

  The architectural and urban diversity characterising mediterranean city is inseparable from their identity. It seems clear at that this diversity and multiplicity of different identities shoud be considered as one of the greatest cultural and human values. The coexistence of forms in time and space, the blending of urban and architectural cultures, influences and contaminations, even the contrast and and contradictions of identity that are revealed in the mediterranean urban  territory reflect the stratification of the city in its pragmatics implications and its identity meanings. Today, in a context of a competition and attractiveness betwen territories, several mediterranean cities are going through a period of profound changes. Faced with these transformations, the reference to "identity territories" (Troin, 2004) and the ability of the city to build an identity and speared it among the population are called into question.

  Images and imaginations in the Middle East and North Africa

  Depuis les années 2000, et en particulier à partir des « révolutions arabes » de 2011, les régions du Maghreb et du Moyen-Orient ont connu une explosion d’images. Réalisées dans des espace-temps situés souvent au cœur des luttes et reprises à foison, parfois hors contexte, diffusées sur les réseaux sociaux ou dans les médias traditionnels, ces images et les points de vue singuliers qu’elles véhiculent sont l’œuvre aussi bien de producteurs professionnels que d’amateurs aux prises avec les événements. Ainsi elles ont participé à médiatiser les conflits et les revendications et à créer une proximité émotionnelle avec les événements. Elles ont aussi servi à se réapproprier un vécu ou à résister à un imaginaire imposé.

  Norms, constraints, and margins of freedom

  Film industry in the Arab world remains generally underdeveloped. Arab countries still depend on international film support funds, mainly European. This puts Arab producers, scriptwriters and filmmakers in a subaltern position in relation to European producers and funders, whose expectations in terms of content and narrative forms end up strongly impacting the film creation process. On the other hand, margins of freedom and resistance can be created within this system. This conference aims at addressing the complex relation between Arab cinemas and international film support funds.

  China in the Mediterranean

  Revue Confluences Méditerranée journal

  Rachat de ports ou d’entreprises énergétiques, redéploiement de la route de la Soie, proposition d’un plan de paix dans le conflit israélo-palestinien, la politique chinoise en Méditerranée est souvent analysée à l’aune de l’émergence d’un nouvel acteur faisant preuve d’activisme dans la région. Elle fait l’objet de beaucoup de fantasmes. Le mégaprojet « Belt and Road Initative » (BRI) lancé par le président chinois Xi Jin-Ping en 2013 suscite bien des attentions et des spéculations. Si le projet est impressionnant par son ampleur, les dynamiques sociospatiales qu’il implique ne sont pourtant pas forcément nouvelles. L’objectif de ce numéro est d’étudier les modalités différenciées de la présence chinoise sur les deux rives de Méditerranée.

  A city of four million inhabitants today, Amman’s expansion has become disproportionate to its urban history. Amman has experienced an impressive urban growth over the past fifty years, driven by forced migration and market laws. Developing from a small rural settlement at the end of the 19^th century, Amman evolved into a regional crossroad at the end of the 20^th century, and has become today a symbol for the consolidation of Hashemite rule, and as a result, the site of its contestation. Amman’s exceptional position among other regional capitals and its recent urban history has forced its inhabitants to create narratives concerning the city’s foundation, invent urban traditions, and negotiate ways of socialization.

  Contemporary ethnographic research in the Middle East

  Many parts of the contemporary Middle East are confronted with war, sectarianism, transnational interferences, uprisings, and a comeback of authoritarian regimes. This brings about various difficulties for ethnographic research as a practice of knowledge production based on the immersion of researchers in given social contexts and the subsequent writing up and publishing of texts. The international conference No country for anthropologists? Contemporary ethnographic research in the Middle East explores the obstacles to do ethnography in the Middle East and take them as the starting point for reflection upon the role of anthropology with a view to the Middle East of today.
