Les formes de résistances culturelles et sociales en Algérie. De l’antiquité à l’indépendance
Volume 3, n° 1 de la Revue d’histoire méditerranéenne
Terre de civilisation, l’Algérie a subi de nombreuses invasions depuis les temps anciens. Rome s’établissait en Afrique du Nord malgré la résistance des Berbères. Cette opposition militaire fut complétée par d’autres formes de résistances culturelles et sociales comme la romanisation, le donatisme et les circoncellions. Durant le Moyen Âge, le Maghreb se transforma profondément. L’islamisation fut presque achevée en moins d’un siècle tandis que l’arabisation d’une majorité du peuple amazigh prit plusieurs siècles. Certains facteurs permirent à la langue berbère de résister. L’influence du mouvement confrérique était une réalité sous les Turcs (1518-1830). Pour des raisons liées à l’impôt, la Darkaouiyya se révolta grâce à un grand soutien populaire (1806-1813). Depuis 1830, la résistance militaire des Algériens occupait les devants de la scène, amenant des réactions violentes de l’occupant.

Les propositions attendues doivent permettre de rassembler les questions vives que posent leur emploi dans différents travaux dans les sciences humaines et sociales en général et en sciences de l'information et de la communication en particulier.

Freedom and Death in the Greek Revolution of 1821
Microhistorical analyses of battles in the Epirotic and Balkan areas
In 2021, during the 200th anniversary of the proclamation of the Greek Revolution of 1821, the Department of History and Archeology will hold another international conference on "Freedom and Death in the Greek Revolution of 1821. Microhistorical analyses of battles in the Epirotic and the Balkan area". The conference will address issues of Greek historiography, such as the Modern Greek Enlightenment in Epirus, Souli, and the networks of Souliotes; operations in Epirus; the battles of Peta, Philhellenes, Plaka, and Kompoti; Lord Byron on Epirus; the strategies of Ali Pasha; the Epirotic networks in Moldovlachia; and the lives and deaths of revolutionaries. Using modern methodological tools and a microhistory approach to conduct systematic research of both new and old archives, the conference will offer original and interesting approaches to an already rich discussion.

On the Bicentennial of the Greek Revolution and the inauguration of the Paris-Athens 1780-1919 exhibition, the Louvre Museum and the French School at Athens are organizing an international conference, which will be held at the Louvre Museum and the Institute of France, from 22 to 23 April 2021 under the auspices of the Académie des Inscriptions et des Belles Lettres. This conference also benefits from the support of the Initiative 1821-2021. The languages of the conference will be French and English.

Venice, a Mediterranean regional power
Economic, maritime and political perspectives, 1669-1797
This seminar aims to explore the relationship between Venice and the Mediterranean between the loss of Crete, the last major dominion of Venetian maritime empire in 1669, and the end of the Republic in 1797. Through the analysis of economic and commercial exchanges, naval activities and diplomatic/military relations of the Serenissima in the Mediterranean, we aim to discuss the dynamics of transformation and adjustment of the Republic’s new status as a regional power faced with the challenges of an Inner Sea crossed and populated by more powerful and richer competitors.

L'objectif de ce colloque est de proposer une analyse comparée des formes d'internement établies par les métropoles coloniales du Sud de l'Europe (France, Espagne, Italie, Portugal) à leur intérieur et au sein de leurs empires et de les relier aux morphologies des différentes méthodes de réclusion contemporaines visant en particulier les migrants et les réfugiés. L’hypothèse qui sera mise en débat au cours du colloque est que la combinaison de la mise en place de dispositifs de contrôle contraignants avec l’identification de catégories considérées « dangereuses » que les autorités souhaitent limiter dans leur action, crée un système de pouvoir et de contrôle des États sur les populations qui devient paradigmatique avec la consolidation des empires coloniaux modernes au XIXe siècle.

Workshop on sexual violence in modern southern European history
Southern European gender models and the implications of these on the study of sexual violence in the western world are relatively under-theorised within broader narratives of the western subject. This workshop seeks to address this lacuna through an exploration of the intersection of southern European culture – understood through the prism of “unity in diversity” – and sexual violence in the modern period. A thorough comparison of sexual violence within the diverse localities of the European south will allow similarities and differences to emerge, and will help to decentre current emphasis on the English-speaking world within the current historiography on sexual violence.

Historiography of the Perception of Islam through Manuscripts, Korans and their Displacement
The aim of this workshop is to approach the question of the relationship between Christianity and Islam through the study of the production, circulation and uses of Arabic manuscripts, and mainly Korans, in the late medieval and early modern Mediterranean Europe. Our assumption is that the Balkans, Italy and the Iberian Peninsula form an axis of circulation which is especially significant for our understanding of the Mediterranean Sea as a comprehensive space of cultural, political and religious contact.

Urban and architectural identities in Mediterranean cities
Identités urbaines et architecturales dans les villes méditerranéennes
The architectural and urban diversity characterising mediterranean city is inseparable from their identity. It seems clear at that this diversity and multiplicity of different identities shoud be considered as one of the greatest cultural and human values. The coexistence of forms in time and space, the blending of urban and architectural cultures, influences and contaminations, even the contrast and and contradictions of identity that are revealed in the mediterranean urban territory reflect the stratification of the city in its pragmatics implications and its identity meanings. Today, in a context of a competition and attractiveness betwen territories, several mediterranean cities are going through a period of profound changes. Faced with these transformations, the reference to "identity territories" (Troin, 2004) and the ability of the city to build an identity and speared it among the population are called into question.

The Western Mediterranean in the 5th century. The great upheaval?
The 5th century is unequivocally identified as a key moment in the history of the Western Mediterranean, marked in particular by the establishment of the Barbarian kingdoms, the end of the Roman Empire in the West and a new phase of Christianity's expansion. These are all major, if not fundamental, upheavals that have profoundly and lastingly influenced the evolution of this geographical area. Currently data available make it very difficult to form a satisfactory global vision of this century because they are so heterogeneous, dispersed and often diluted in diachronic approaches. From this observation emerges the need to gather, cross-reference and compare the extremely abundant information in order to measure the transformations and the space they affect during the 5th century. An international symposium is undoubtedly the most appropriate tool to approach this issue, given the multiplicity of research teams working in this field and the scope of the geographical framework concerned.

The expansion and culture of herbs around the world - text and image
From the peaks of the Himalaya to the Mediterranean Sea, from the outset of the Silk Road to the far reaches of the Eurasian continent, the economy and culture of herbs has expanded over the course of time. Whether used as common products of consumption or considered as rare and valuable commodities, sold in their raw form or transformed, these medicinal or aromatic herbs have become precious cultural ambassadors in encounters with more and more faraway horizons. This book project centers on the idea of herbs as vectors of encounters and cultural exchanges. Indeed, the expansion and use of herbs around the world have led to the emergence of interacting and expanding cultural practices. The focus will be on defining the specific fields pertaining to the knowledge of herbs, with a particular interest in their cultivation, harvesting, commercialisation and circulation.

Cette journée d'étude transpériodique et interdisciplinaire (histoire, civilisation hispanique, histoire des arts, sciences politiques, etc.) entend interroger les rapports de pouvoir et de domination (sur le plan politique, économique psychologique ou symbolique) s’inscrivant dans une dimension sensible et s’exprimant par des émotions (adhésion, résistance, joie, tristesse, amour, haine, etc.) individuelles et/ou collectives qui peuvent aussi bien renforcer les structures de décision que les fragiliser en cas de contestation radicale. Le domaine d’étude visé est l’Epoque Moderne (France-Espagne) sans pour autant s’interdire d’explorer des repères plus anciens, dotés d’une valeur exemplaire ou fondatrice.

Otherness and resistance through the prism of gender in the Mediterranean
Ce colloque, pluridisciplinaire, se propose d’analyser, à travers les rapports sociaux de sexe, les dynamiques, ajustements et changements provoqués par les comportements alternatifs aux normes sociales, aux conventions familiales, aux pratiques sexuelles, etc. qui émergent dans les moments de bouleversements politiques et de migrations – comme ceux que l’on a connus dans le bassin méditerranéen. L’attention sera portée sur des exemples pris dans l’histoire longue ou dans l’actualité récente présentant les logiques d’affrontements, répressions, adaptations, violences, accommodements voire innovations qui s’expriment dans des résistances émancipatrices ou au contraire conservatrices et les dialogues Nord-Sud possibles dans ces contextes.

The social and political life of collections, archives and museums in the contemporary Mediterranean
Depuis la publication de l’ouvrage Les lieux de mémoire (1984-1992), le lien entre nation et patrimoine a été abondamment travaillé. Cette journée d’étude se propose d’explorer des processus connexes à la dynamique patrimoniale classique: la formation circonstancielle et l’existence au jour le jour d’ensembles d’objets, de papiers, de lieux qui entrent également dans le champ patrimonial, bien que par des voies détournées, et dont il s’agit de retracer l’histoire et la réception, toujours particulières. La Méditerranée contemporaine offre un observatoire privilégié pour considérer ces phénomènes à l’échelle d’un vaste territoire aux frontières mouvantes et aux appartenances fluides dans un monde en perpétuelle reconfiguration entre des régimes de gouvernance, des dynamiques sociales, et des relations internationales instables.

First part: the age of the Roman Republic
Si la place de l’hellénisme dans le monde romain a été bien étudiée pour la période républicaine, les rapports que les Romains entretenaient avec les Grecs de leur temps, ainsi que la manière dont ils les considéraient méritent d’être explorées plus avant. Quelles relations les Romains nouèrent-ils donc avec les Grecs avec lesquels ils étaient en contact ? Et tout d’abord, comment perçurent-ils les Grecs vivant en Grande Grèce, sur le sol même de l’Italie ? Lorsqu’ils commencèrent à remporter des victoires sur les rois hellénistiques, firent-ils une distinction entre hellénisme et peuple grec pour mieux assumer l’héritage de l’un sans s’encombrer de l’autre ? Les Romains faisaient-ils une différence entre Grecs de Grèce, d’Italie et d’Orient ? Quelles relations personnelles les aristocrates romains avaient-ils avec des Grecs ? Et quels Grecs ? Le statut social était-il le facteur prédominant dans le choix de ces relations ?

144th national congress of historical and academic societies
Chaque année, le Congrès national des sociétés historiques et scientifiques (CTHS), lieu de rencontre et d’échange unique dans le paysage de la recherche française, rassemble environ cinq cents participants parmi lesquels des universitaires issus de très nombreuses disciplines : histoire, géographie, sciences, ethnologie, anthropologie, préhistoire et protohistoire, archéologie, philologie, histoire de l'art, environnement, etc. Il accueille également des jeunes chercheurs (dont c’est parfois la première intervention publique) et des érudits locaux membres de sociétés savantes. La confrontation des regards, des expériences et des approches méthodologiques explique la singularité du congrès du CTHS.

Creating a diaspora in the city - memories, representations and institutions
Mediterranean Europe, 14th-18th century
Nous souhaitons aborder dans ces journées d’études les enjeux de la construction d’un groupe en diaspora à travers le cadre urbain, pris à la fois comme espace et territoire dans lequel se déploient les perceptions et les stratégies des acteurs, et pris également comme lieu dans lequel les communautés interagissent entre elles, avec les institutions et autorités locales. Nous proposons donc de faire se rencontrer l’étude des diasporas avec deux thématiques actuelles de l’histoire urbaine : l’étude de la répartition et de l’implantation des étrangers en ville d’une part, et celle des usages de l’espace urbain d’autre part. Il s'agira de comprendre, par l’urbain et ses spécificités, comment on aboutit à des identités collectives – parfois souples et négociées, parfois assignées de manière plus autoritaire – de ces groupes sociaux qui finissent par être pensées et se penser comme diaspora, voire par être institutionnalisés.
