Le cas Georgette Leblanc (1869-1941)
Une artiste au cœur des échanges artistiques et intellectuels de champs modernistes transnationaux (opéra, théâtre, cinéma, littérature, féminisme)
Ce colloque se propose d’aborder la figure de Georgette Leblanc au travers de l’un ou l’autre des métiers qu’elle a endossés dans le contexte de champs artistiques et intellectuels divers, ou bien encore comme figure moderniste, figure intermédiale ou figure d’une histoire du genre. Figure bourgeoise de la première vague féministe, chanteuse lyrique aux répertoires contrastés, metteuse en scène peu reconnue comme telle, promotrice et médiatrice déterminante d’une œuvre littéraire, Georgette Leblanc fut aussi une collaboratrice intellectuelle pour Maurice Maeterlinck et l’écrivaine principale de plusieurs ouvrages et articles de nature principalement autobiographique ou documentaire.

"Modernas, flappers, and garçonnes": the representation of femininity in the 1920s and 1930s
Spanish, French and Anglo-Saxon perspectives
Ce colloque sera l’occasion de créer un espace consacré à la représentation d’une féminité de l’« entre-deux » dans plusieurs aires géographiques (Espagne, France, Royaume-Uni, États-Unis, etc.). Des questions de genre littéraire, de genre et d’identité sexuelle, de réseaux d’intellectuelles et de géographies spécifiques se rencontrent, notamment sous un angle géocritique, pour mettre en avant des femmes et des représentations de la féminité souvent oubliées. En prenant en compte les quatre « points cardinaux » d’une approche géocritique (multifocalisation, polysensoralité, stratigraphie, intertextualité), nous allons entre autres questionner les espaces de sociabilité de ces femmes et la construction de la moderna ou de la garçonne.

Jan Valtin retrospective (1941-1951)
Il n’y a pas beaucoup d’écrivains dont l’œuvre fut aussi fulgurante et la vie aussi pleine de rebondissements que celle de Jan Valtin. Son premier livre, Out of the Night, s’imposa dès sa sortie comme le plus grand succès de l'édition américaine depuis Gone with the wind (Autant en emporte le vent) ; il fut vendu à plus d’un million d’exemplaires aux États-Unis, en moins d’un an, et fut plus tard traduit dans de nombreuses langues. Ce récit à couper le souffle de la vie d’un révolutionnaire allemand sous la République de Weimar et la première période du nazisme avait pour mérite d’éclairer la façon dont l’action des communistes contre la social-démocratie en tant qu’ennemi principal avait conduit à l’alliance objective des totalitarismes pour détruire la démocratie bourgeoise.

Ce colloque international se donne pour objectif de s’intéresser spécifiquement à l’année 1968 et à ses effets, en embrassant largement l’aire caribéenne ainsi que nord, méso et sud-Américaine. Les organisateur-trice-s entendent favoriser les approches pluridisciplinaires et mettre en lien les aires géo-culturelles, de façon à insister sur les transversalités, les échanges, les transferts culturels et politiques ainsi que les parallélismes dont l’année 1968 est porteuse. Nous proposons de décliner l’année 1968 à l’aune de plusieurs prismes, lectures et présentations issus des champs d’investigations suivants : littérature, arts (arts visuels, cinéma, musique), archives et manuscrits, histoire, sciences politiques et sociologie. Le colloque est largement ouvert aux approches transdisciplinaires « informatisées » dans une perspective dite des « humanités numériques ».

1993-2018 : Twenty-Five Years of Vertigo
The Vertigo imprint was created in 1993 by DC Comics to publish “mature readers” material that challenged mainstream expectations. These books, many of which were creator-owned, sought to subvert narrative, graphic, editorial and moral conventions. With many successful and ambitious titles such as Sandman, Preacher, Transmetropolitan, Hellblazer, Fables or 100 Bullets, Vertigo played a seminal role in the recent history of American mainstream comics. However, in recent years, the imprint seems to have lost its specificity and struggles to renew itself. On the occasion of Vertigo's 25th anniversary, France's first symposium on the imprint will invite scholars to take stock of the imprint's aesthetic identity and its contribution to the cultural history of comics.

Dissonance, eclecticism and the fusion of genres in modern and contemporary English-speaking culture
L’objet de cette journée d’études est d’interroger les possibilités ouvertes par la sociologie culturelle - notamment les concepts d'omnivorisme, d'éclectisme, de dissonance - aux autres disciplines, notamment celles (civilisation, littérature, histoire) traditionnellement attachées à des aires culturelles (anglophone notamment) et plus ouvertes au syncrétisme théorique que la sociologie. La problématique du mélange des genres constitue-elle une approche permettant d’appréhender la culture dans son ensemble ? C’est ce que nous nous proposons de déplier pendant cette journée d’études, en s’attachant à la fois au point de vue des consommateurs, des créateurs et des créations culturelles.

Ce colloque s’intéressera à tous ces récits de voyage qui, en faisant un détour par l’étranger et en postulant une identité en mouvement, permettent de réactualiser l’expérience fondatrice du voyage dans la culture américaine, que ces récits émanent d’étrangers ou d’Américains expatriés. Étant donné que ce colloque se place résolument dans une perspective transnationale et souhaite encourager le dialogue entre anglicistes et spécialistes d’autres disciplines, les communications, d’une durée de trente minutes, seront en français.

“Literary Offenses” and Other Contentious Matter
This one-day conference will address the subject of controversial or polemical texts such as reviews, essays, letters, prefaces and/or postfaces published between 1800 and 1900 in Britain and the United States. It seeks to open fresh approaches to controversies or polemics by focusing on literature and the literary aspects of these questions. Indeed, if controversy can be defined as a debate between two or more parties with different viewpoints before an audience, studies have mainly come from the fields of social sciences and science studies, with some interest in rhetoric and/or argumentation. However, literary controversies are as important as scientific ones for the constitution of the public, democratic debate as it was shaped in Britain and in the U.S. in the nineteenth century. Controversies and polemics contributed to legitimizing some literary genres; they gave publicity to new or avant-garde authors; they redefined the content and contours of the public debate.

The circulation of popular culture between Ireland and the USA (18th-21st centuries)
Dans le système de culture mondialisée qui caractérise les sociétés contemporaines, l'organisation d'un colloque international invite à concentrer l’attention sur un cas d’étude, la circulation des diverses formes de culture populaire entre Irlande et États-Unis. L’ancienneté, la constance et de l’intensité des échanges culturels entre les deux nations sont en effet largement antérieurs à la mondialisation culturelle ultra-contemporaine. Cette singularité inscrite dans la longue durée permet de mettre en perspective les phénomènes contemporains tout en les interrogeant.

Modes of Silence in the Seventeenth- and Eighteenth-Century Anglo-American World
The aim of this conference is to explore modes of silence, understood as the voluntary or involuntary renunciation of speech, in the seventeenth and eighteenth century Anglo-American world. Various approaches covering a wide range of disciplines are welcome: literature, art history, history of religion, politics and science, history of the book. The organisers will especially value papers that study the dynamics of silence and speech.

En 1945, Gustave Cohen écrivait que « le De translatione studii (...) se prolonge vers l’Ouest dans le sens de la marche apparente du soleil », faisant référence à l’épanouissement des Mediaeval Studies outre-atlantique. La fondation de la Mediaeval Academy of America à Harvard et de sa revue Speculum en 1925, ainsi que le don de John D. Rockfeller, la même année, qui permit l’acquisition de la collection et du bâtiment des Cloisters par le Metropolitan Museum, ont donné une impulsion à l’étude du Moyen Âge en Amérique du Nord qui n’est jamais retombée, et qui s’est traduite par la création d’institutions qui ont joué un rôle majeur dans la diffusion de la médiévistique (le Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies à Toronto ouvert en 1929 sous la houlette d’Etienne Gilson, l’Institut d’Études Médiévales d’Ottawa en 1930, l’Institut d’Études Médiévales de l’Université de Notre Dame en 1946).

Angles, French Perspectives on the Anglophone World
For its inaugural issue, Angles: French Perspectives on the Anglophone World welcomes original proposals inspired by the celebrated aphorism: ‘Brevity is the soul of wit’. Often used to describe a literary and social form (humor or sarcasm) or to illustrate commonplaces, the dictum encapsulates beliefs about the relationship between ‘brevity’ and ‘wit’ which have numerous implications in different disciplines and forms of expression. The aphorism not only suggests that brevity is a gateway to revelatory truths, it also implies that true ‘wit’ exists only in shortened form, paradoxically positing depth of meaning (‘soul’) in brevity of form, and also hinting that humor loses its essence when explicated. Additional contradictions emerge when one recalls the context in which the line appears in Hamlet, when Polonius tires the audience by giving some words of wisdom to his departing son.

Displacement, Transgression and Dissent
France, Great Britain and the American Colonies (c.1600-1800)
This young researchers' conference sets out to examine norms and transgessions in 17th- and 18th-century France, Great Britain and early America, in relation to issues such as knowledge and science, religious dissent and political radicalism, the ontological status of man, definitions of reason and forms of unreason, including melancholy and madness, new discourses of body and mind, including those that shaped concepts of sexual behaviour deemed abnormal or contrary to Nature, the emergence of a political sphere, the beginnings of a public sphere...The aim of the conference will be to explore how these and related issues were explored in literary and artistic forms, as for example in poetry, satirical pamphlets, travel writings and utopias, drama and theological or moral controversies.

En présence de Judith Butler, Avital Ronell, Catherine Malabou, Martin Puchner, ce prochain colloque questionnera le lien problématique entre théâtre et philosophie, à l’aune des pensées anglo-américaines. De nouveaux croisements, de nouveaux transferts entre l’idée et la scène, l’abstrait et le concret impliquent un changement radical de perspective sur la philosophie et la performance. Au-delà du théâtre pensé comme référence littéraire ou comme concept opératoire, il s’agira de comprendre comment les philosophes anglo-américains peuvent nous communiquer une idée de la scène contemporaine, en tant que lieu physique, concret et vivant, théâtral et/ou performatif.

Evolutions of the American city
Ce colloque international se propose de croiser les approches disciplinaires sur la question des origines et celle de la transmission des identités urbaines. La problématique des transferts des savoirs, qui s’inscrit dans la continuité des colloques et des publications du laboratoire de recherche CRIT permettra d’élargir la réflexion sur la fluidité ou la rémanence de ces représenta. En effet, l’espace urbain a de tout temps accueilli, et parfois rejeté, souvent dans un paradoxe se nourrissant de ces ceux extrêmes, des populations venues d’horizons divers. Dans ce pays d’immigration que sont les États-Unis, le phénomène d’urbanisation est particulièrement propice à ce déploiement d’énergies, ainsi qu’aux brassages culturels et projets économiques et politiques. C’est alors un processus de savoirs entrecroisés qui au fil des années impose aux villes américaines leur géographie humaine si particulière et des spécificités propres.

Le continent américain a été et reste un pôle attractif pour des populations/des individus en quête d’un monde nouveau et meilleur, qu’il a acceptés et refoulés tout au long de son histoire. Comment l’américanité, réelle ou mythique, accueillante ou exclusive, opère-t-elle en tant que critère d’une recherche identitaire dans la réélaboration constante et l’évolution des visions culturelles de l’Amérique du nord et de l’Amérique latine ?

The inaugural international conference of the French Society of Modernist Studies
The aim of this two-day conference is to foster discussion on communities in the modernist period. As discursive constructs and historical practices, communities constitute a privileged phenomenon from which to understand the political and ethical regime of modernist texts, as well as the actual forms of collective experience in which writers and readers were involved. More than a decade after Jessica Berman’s landmark work on "the politics of community" in modernist fiction, we seek to explore the various ways in which communities were configured across genres and artistic media, but also to acknowledge the grounds of their historical and cultural specificity. We hope that this will lead us to distinguish various versions of the communal, from the ideal to the empirical, from the utopian to the everyday, from consensus to dissensus.

Lire la littérature et les arts visuels du monde anglophone avec le Lacan de l’après-encore
Reading English-language Arts and Literature with the Later Lacan
Lacanian analysis of literature and the arts has not been in vogue in France for some time now. Following the publication of Écrits in 1966, there was a period of analytic fascination with the imaginary capture of the mirror phase and its intersection with the structures of the symbolic in both literary and film studies. Since the 1980s, academic engagement with Lacanian theory in the cultural field has been in a slump, and this for several reasons: the reputed difficulty of Lacan’s style as apprehended through Ecrits, the opposition of numerous feminist critics, and the general decline of theory in the field of literary studies. Today, in light of the growing force of scientistic conceptions of the human subject (at the level of intelligence, behaviour, reproduction, the limits of the body, mortality), Lacanian theory finds renewed relevance in its unwavering postulate of the subject as singular, unique and incalculable, insusceptible to scientific conclusiveness.

While classical intertextuality has been a widely studied subject and a much-discussed topic in the field of European literary theory, there exist, as of yet, only one-off studies regarding its developments in the “New World”. Although works by writers such as Edgar Allan Poe and Jorge Luis Borges have often been analyzed from an intertextuality-oriented perspective, and although several research projects, by focusing on this or that national or regional literature of the Continent, have helped cover sizeable blind spots in literary history, the groundwork has yet to be laid for an overall theoretical approach on the ways in which the Ancient Classics have hitherto been reprised and rewritten in the Americas.
