« L'heure de nous-mêmes a sonné »
Étude transatlantique et transdisciplinaire des contre-représentations noires de 1945 à nos jours
L’enjeu majeur de cette journée d’étude sera d’interroger la multiplicité des productions visuelles issues des populations noires et membres de la diaspora entre Europe et Amérique dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Il s’agira tout particulièrement de considérer les réalisations questionnant, directement ou en creux, les modèles traditionnels de représentation de ces populations — par exemple des représentations faisant montre d'une rupture idéologique et/ou visuelle (vis-à-vis) des canons dépréciatifs, largement ancrés dans l'imaginaire collectif international, qu'il s'agisse de contre-modèles positifs ou de propositions subvertissant d'anciens cadres de représentations dépréciatifs. Un angle d'approche possible du sujet pourra concerner des images ignorées voire exclues du champ de recherche de l'histoire officielle car ils émanent d'acteurs marginaux ou plus simplement tombés dans l’oubli et seraient donc confinés « à la marge » des études sur les représentations.

Ce numéro d’Études Cinématographiques entend interroger la circulation du concept d’intersectionnalité, sa pertinence et ses limites, dans le champ des études filmiques et médiatiques. En reliant économie du cinéma, cultural studies et approche esthétique, nous souhaitons développer trois angles de réflexion emblématiques de la spécificité du cinéma comme un art, une industrie et un rapport aux différents publics.

A cash award of $3,000 is made to the author of a recent book-length publication that provides new insights into works of art, the artists who made them, or aspects of history and theory that enrich our understanding of the artistic heritage of the United States.

This 2016 workshop on contemporary US-UK photography will take on the notion of censorship. With photography as its starting point, this edition aims to extend the debate to include the contemporary image on the whole. It is interested in the intermedial forays of other artistic forms in the practice of photographers (art installations, video and/or audio productions, performance, urban art practices, text/image interactions). How does the very artistic form/medium become in itself a means of expression and commitment when confronted with censorship, a means to create unity against censorship, a tool for identity expression of a group or of a minority, to circumvent constraints, or thrive upon these limits and generate creative impetus from them?

From the power of images to images of power, this workshop will explore the representations of power and the power of representation in contemporary American and British photography. What is photography capable of doing? Whether in the form of a public person, the environment of power (emblematic places and explicit or underlying forms) or its symbolism, what is photography capable of revealing about power itself? Political, institutional, economic or social power all depend upon a system of relations or tensions between groups or individuals (accepted, rejected, questioned, expressed visually or internalized) participating in the construction of the identity, myths or memories of the American or British nations. In what manner does photography enhance or contribute to this construction or deconstruction of the notion of identity and nation?

The American and British Nations in Contemporary Landscape Photography

Premier colloque international consacré au travail du peintre new-yorkais David Diao. Le colloque proposera des points de vues variés sur le travail de David Diao. Il s’agit d’engager des analyses ciblées sur certains aspects de son travail, mais aussi de proposer des mises en relation entre Diao et d’autres artistes, d’analyser le parcours et l’œuvre de Diao en le situant dans un contexte global de l’art contemporain depuis 1970 jusqu’à aujourd’hui. L’objectif est de contribuer à créer aujourd’hui un ambitieux travail théorique sur le travail de l’artiste.
