5th International "Language and Territory" Colloquium
This multidisciplinary colloquium will discuss the different ways that languages and territories are linked, and will show the political, social and economic stakes that arise from the relationships between them. Above all, these terms refer to men and women with their social practices and representations, at the core of the logic of territoriality. New territories give rise to new language practices, which, in turn, create new spaces, discourse and meaning. The "boundaries" we draw between languages and territories are permeable in time and space, depending on factors such as population displacement, language policies, linguistic and social representations, education, mass media and socio-cultural values.

MemWar. Memory and forgetting of war and trauma in the 20th century

European ways of inciting and containing armed conflict, 1648-2020
The history of Europe is as much about violence and divisions – including religious wars, national clashes and ideological conflicts – as it is about shared cultural, social and economic accomplishments. If war has been such a constant presence in the history unfolding on the continent, the incessant efforts to limit its destructiveness are also an undeniable fact. It was such efforts that eventually led to the birth of Jus ad bellum and, ultimately, laid down the foundations of modern international law. From such a viewpoint, one might even find another definition of what European history might be. Some scholars have suggested that if war has structured a common European space, the containment of violence and the art of peacemaking have constituted ‘Europe’ in thought and practice.

Breaking boundaries: academia, activism and the arts
The international conference Breaking Boundaries: Academia, Activism and the Arts proposes to bring into focus and critically question common grounds and boundaries between and within the Humanities, political activity and aesthetic production. At a time when boundaries are simultaneously questioned and reinforced – for example between geographical territories, political states, public and private spheres, gendered bodies, creative media, theory and practice, local and global, human, non-human and post-human – the question of what such frontiers stand for, and how and why they might be transgressed offers itself for and, indeed, urges discussion.

Call for papers - Representation

Politically incorrect - does the world belong to polyglots?
3rd international conference of foreign languages

Collective Identities and Post-War Violence in Europe 1944–1948
The conference will analyze the composition of nationalities (who belonged to the national community?), the legitimizing function of nationalism, and its relation to acts of violence at the end of war and to the reshaping of postwar societies. At the same time, we want to address the differences between countries. How did a specific occupation policy in a specific place, with its specific national and racist criteria, influence the “responses” of the occupied society? Is there any evidence of a biological understanding of nationhood? How did competing concepts shape a new understanding of the “nation”—particularly taking into consideration the different political and cultural developments in various nation-states after the war ended? We are interested in papers that touch upon violent acts occurring at the end of World War II and stemming from nationalism as reshaped by previous war experiences.

Struggle for recognition: identity-formation and subjectivation
The theme of the conference is “Struggle for recognition: identity-formation and subjectivation”. The struggle of recognition has emerged, in the recent years, as a powerful paradigm. It is at the intersection of different areas of the human sciences: philosophy, gender studies, critical theory, discourse analysis, literature, etc. It is widely associated with the works of Axel Honneth, Nancy Fraser, Charles Taylor, Paul Ricoeur, to name just a few prominent figureheads. We aim to bring together scholars and graduates researching the intersections of linguistics, cultural and literary studies with a particular focus on identity discourses, gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, diaspora and diasporic discourses, cultural images and imagology, and various ways of struggling for recognition and subjectivation.

Instances of power and cultural discourse
Intercultural exchange in the age of globalization, second edition
In the context of today’s social, political and economic changes, power is one of the governing principles of culture. Power comes in many shapes and sizes and it manifests itself under various forms: it can be tyrannical or a combination of forces (Foucault); it can be charismatic, traditional and rational (Weber) or the opposite – manipulative; it can also appear as a system of diluted forces that spring from the “social field” (Bourdieu); it can remain in the unconscious or it can manifest itself in the speech act. However it may appear, it has become clear that power shapes the course of the creation, interpretation and analysis of literary texts and other cultural products.

Divided memories, shared memories: Poland, Russia, Ukraine
History mirrored in literature and cinema
In Central and Eastern European countries, memorial questions appeared right after the demise of the communist regimes in 1989–1991, revealing long-denied processes. The phenomenon of the rise of repressed memories along with the rewriting of history, and the political uses of the past are noticeable in Poland, Russia, and Ukraine, three countries whose histories are as often shared as their memories are divided. The “memory wars” in which these three states have sometimes been engaged since the end of the 1980s have been the subject of an abundant historiography.

Educative communities - training and practices in the context of diversity

Music and post-war aftermaths, 19th-21st centuries - Music and Nation III

"The Balfour Declaration" : What centenary
In order to address this notorious Declaration, we propose a debate on the historical, political and geostrategic circumstances that led to the Balfour Declaration, and how practical politics influences the making of Britain’s foreign policy. The Balfour Declaration and its ramifications at the local and global levels could be tackled with reference to a myriad of theoretical frameworks such as the postcolonial/political theory, new historicism, ethnography, to name but a few.

Art and research relating to the visible and invisible traces of conflicts - interdisciplinary and inter-artistic approaches to war heritag
This symposium is part of the research project “landscape(s) of the strange. On visible and invisible traces of a regional heritage in transformation. Artistic and theoretical (re)-constructions of a cross-border history marked by major conflicts” started in 2016. To begin with, the project approached the notion of “trace” or “mark” in its material (heritage, architecture, vegetation) and immaterial (memory, culture) dimensions, especially those related to the concrete landscape of Lorraine which bears the mark of a conflictual history opposing Frenchmen and Germans, especially during the two World Wars.

Berlin
A Realm of Memory of the Cold War
Whether or not “the entire world” was looking at Berlin, as Reuter asserted, is one of the central questions to be addressed at our conference. Starting from the “frontline city” of Berlin, we will cast our glance to West Germany and its neighboring countries in order not only to frame the Berlin Airlift as a transnational memorial of the Cold War, but also to address, from outside, the question of whether Berlin was really the international focus of the East-West conflict back then, as the press and academia so often portray it.

The fictions of terrorism in the French-speaking space
Alternative francophone journal vol. 2, no.1

To reconcile and to reincorporate
Discourse, ceremonies and practices in and beyond the Iberic Monarchies
In recent years historiography has been slowly acknowledging the potential of civil societies to restore concord after profound divisions. It also has uncovered the pacification strategies of authorities to reconcile and reincorporate individuals and social groups after periods of contestation and revolt. These complex processes are crucial to better understand the history of the Iberic monarchies, which have been able to develop a long-term government despite many crises of different origin and outlook. Hence, this conference will be focused on the themes of reconciliation and reincorporation from following four perspectives: Words, discourses and emotions (semantics and sentiments), Negotiating reconciliation (promotors and strategies), Making reconciliation work (agents and mediators, processes and forms), In the margin of reconciliations (the undecided and excluded)
