  Narrative forms and co-production in Arab cinemas

  Norms, constraints, and margins of freedom

  Film industry in the Arab world remains generally underdeveloped. Arab countries still depend on international film support funds, mainly European. This puts Arab producers, scriptwriters and filmmakers in a subaltern position in relation to European producers and funders, whose expectations in terms of content and narrative forms end up strongly impacting the film creation process. On the other hand, margins of freedom and resistance can be created within this system. This conference aims at addressing the complex relation between Arab cinemas and international film support funds.

  The journal focuses on Film Studies, Theater Studies and Visual Arts in general, in the MENA region as well as Mediterranean countries. It is published twice a year and is trilingual (French, English and Arabic). It comprises a call for papers section, a Varia section and a reviews section. For its second issue, Regards launches a call for papers for its thematic dossier as well as for its Varia section.

  Constructing Kurgans

  Burial mounds and funerary customs in the Caucasus, Northwestern Iran and Eastern Anatolia during the Bronze and Iron Age

  The tradition of burying the dead in burial mounds (kurgans), usually consisting of a funerary chamber limited by stone or brickslabs and covered by dirt and gravel, started in the fourth millennium BCE in the northern Caucasus and then spread south to the rest of the Caucasus regions, eastern Anatolia and northwestern Iran during the Bronze Age and Iron Age. The spread of the kurgan tradition, as well as the territorial, political, social, and cultural values embedded in their construction and their symbolic relation to the surrounding landscape are under debate. The workshop aims to examine chronological issues, cultural dynamics at inter-regional scale, rituals and burial patterns related to these funerary structures. The beliefs and ideologies that possibly connected the "kurgan people" over such a wide geographical area, as well as past and present theoretical frameworks, will also be discussed.

  In order to address this notorious Declaration, we propose a debate on the historical, political and geostrategic circumstances that led to the Balfour Declaration, and how  practical  politics  influences the making of Britain’s foreign policy. The Balfour Declaration and its ramifications at the local and global levels could be tackled with reference to a myriad of theoretical frameworks such as the postcolonial/political theory, new historicism, ethnography, to name but a few.

  Notre colloque se propose d’accueillir les contributions qui étudieront ou feront découvrir les multiples univers artistiques dans lesquels les initiateurs, artistes arabes ou d’origine arabe, évoluent après avoir effectué un passage en Occident. Comment ces artistes ont-ils abordé dans leurs créations l’altérité occidentale et la leur ? Comment tirent-ils parti de leur mobilité géographique ? À quel point interagissent-ils avec les cultures et les acteurs culturels de leurs terres d’asile ? Quel regard portent-ils sur leur pays d’origine ? Quelle place occupent-ils dans le paysage culturel arabe ? Est-ce qu’ils ont en commun quelques traits ou stratégies artistiques ? Quelle est la portée artistique et politique de leurs créations ?

  Images, narratives and identities: what the visual arts of the Maghreb and the Middle East have to teach us (19th-21st century)

  Workshop in the framework of the GIS conference - the Middle East and Muslim worlds, 2015

  L’analyse des œuvres plastiques élaborées par des artistes modernes et contemporains dans les sociétés du Maghreb et du Moyen Orient depuis le XIX^e siècle, de leurs formes, mais aussi des conditions de leur production et des modalités de leur réception, reste aujourd’hui un domaine relativement peu exploré, malgré les perspectives qu'elle ouvre pour comprendre ces sociétés. La lecture de ces œuvres permet de saisir des discours révélateurs du rapport que les acteurs sociaux entretiennent avec leur passé et leur présent. Nous proposons dans cet atelier d’explorer cette question à travers l’idée, issue de la sémiologie visuelle, que l’image s’appréhende sur le modèle du texte, « dans la mesure où ses constituants (et leur distribution dans l’espace de la représentation), sollicite[nt] de la part du spectateur une série d’ajustements [propres à] la lecture ».

  Le programme de recherche, fondé par l’European research council When Authoritarianism Fails in the Arab World (WAFAW), invite les universitaires, chercheurs et étudiants, travaillant en science politique, relations internationales, études migratoires, sociologie ou économie politiques, a envoyer leur proposition de communications pour apporter des éléments de réponse aux questions telles que : Comment l’événement, la rupture et la nouvelle palette des possibles ont-ils suscité ce nouvel élan de « nationalisme à distance », au delà des cercles déjà politisés et en exil ? Comment les soulèvements, leur répression et la reprise en main autoritaire a donné une saillance renouvelée aux groupes d’opposition à l’étranger ? Comment les régimes gèrent-ils les relations avec ces acteurs transnationaux ?

  L'orientalisme désorienté ? La Turquie contemporaine au miroir des approches postcoloniales

  Les études turques se sont-elles entièrement dégagées du paradigme « orientaliste » ? Ce colloque a pour objet de réévaluer le regard porté sur la Turquie par les sciences sociales : les études sur la Turquie, considérées encore trop souvent comme relevant d’une « aire culturelle » irrémédiablement singulière, paraissent relativement hermétiques aux avancées théoriques, notamment vis-à-vis des interrogations induites depuis une trentaine d’années par les apports des différentes branches des postcolonial studies. Dans cette perspective, nous proposons deux axes centraux.
