Cartographical approaches to mobilities, circulation, flows and movements: methods, tools, representations, pratices and uses
Le colloque « Tous (im)mobiles, tous cartographes ? » ambitionne d’être une vitrine de l’avancée récente de recherches et travaux réalisés dans le champ de la production cartographique issue de données portant sur des déplacements au sens large, que ces derniers soient individuels, isolés ou concernent des groupes agrégés en flux ou non, et relatifs à des personnes, des biens ou des marchandises, des idées ou des informations. Le colloque souhaite montrer la fertilité du croisement des approches thématiques, théoriques et méthodologiques, techniques et technologiques, mobilisées pour la mise en cartes d’informations spatio-temporelles pouvant être difficiles à examiner, parce qu’elles sont complexes, massives ou sensibles.

Ce colloque interdisciplinaire interroge les manières dont le numérique, par les méthodes qu'il génère, permet d'approcher la complexité des organisations spatiales, qu'elles soient naturelles ou artificielles. Cette interrogation s'inscrit dans le cadre de la production de connaissances et dans celui de l'invention d'organisations nouvelles. L'incidence du numérique sur les organisations humaines au sein des territoires (agricoles, urbains, paysagers, architecturaux, naturels) sera également placée au sein des débats.

Mental maps: methodologies for approaching socio-spatial representations

Les disciplines scientifiques se référant à la carte mentale sont toujours plus nombreuses et les méthodes de recueil de plus en plus variées, entremêlant souvent des modes hybrides entre la représentation mentale ou cognitive, liée à la représentation sociale et à l'imaginaire collectif, le parcours commenté, le dessin réflexif, le jeu, l’enquête visuelle, les cartes collectives... Dans ces représentations spatiales, l’espace est un cadre – géographique, certes, mais également un espace social, de pratiques, psychologique, cognitif, politique, artistique, identitaire, symbolique, etc. L’idée est de savoir si l’on peut changer la dimension – ainsi que le support – de la carte mentale (2D, 3D, utilisation de drône, réalité augmentée, etc. ?).

Writing space - uses of cartography in social sciences
Usages de la cartographie en sciences sociales
La cartographie est aujourd’hui investie par des champs d’études autres que la géographie, ce qui rend nécessaire la création d’espaces de dialogue entre disciplines par le partage de méthodes proches d’enquête ou d’analyse. Cette journée doctorale propose d’analyser les usages et les apports de la cartographie pour les sciences sociales à travers des cas d’études spécifiques et des méthodes innovantes de son utilisation. Dans une perspective méthodologique, l’usage et les choix de représentations, les méthodes utilisées (logiciels de SIG, cartographie proportionnelle, schéma etc.) ainsi que la distinction entre cartographie qualitative et quantitative posent question. Qu’apporte la représentation cartographique à la recherche en sciences sociales ? L’objectif de cette journée n’est pas de présenter techniquement les logiciels, mais de comprendre les enjeux du recours à la cartographie en sciences sociales, de la mise en œuvre des terrains à la construction de discours sur l’espace. Cet appel à communication s’adresse aux doctorant(e)s de toute discipline (anthropologie, histoire, géographie, sociologie, économie, etc.) qui traitent de ces questions dans leur recherche.

Fonder, peupler, habiter, gouverner
Les phénomènes coloniaux ont très largement été des phénomènes urbains. De même, la création de territoires urbains (villes nouvelles, infrastructures, settlements, etc.) sont régulièrement qualifiés de « colonial ». Ainsi, au croisement des études urbaines et des études coloniales, cet atelier doctoral envisage donc d'interroger, à l'aune de cas d'étude situés, aussi bien diverses situations coloniales que la prolifération contemporaine des discours qualifiant telle ou telle situation urbaine de « coloniale ».

How can research on architectural and urban ambiances come to grips with experimentation? How can ambiance phenomena be explored in greater depth or discovered through spatial experimentation? Or how can such experimentation be built or conceptualized on the basis of assumptions regarding ambiance? Often presented as the basis for technical, aesthetic or indeed social innovation, what sort of experimentation can contribute to furthering our understanding, producing artefacts or setting in motion processes of architectural or urban transformation likely to encourage, drive or modify lived-in ambiances?

Geomedia is an emerging concept that has been deployed to capture a particular technological condition, associated with recent rapid developments in digital technology. As such, it signals to the dialectics of locative media and the mediations of localities. However, the concept of geomedia carries deeper/wider ontological and epistemological registers that transcend the simple twining of geography and media. In this wider sense, geomedia gestures to the expanding interdisciplinary terrain at the crossroads of media studies and geography, where various ontologies and epistemologies of space/time, flows/mobilities and mediation/ mediatization come together. The aim of this special issue is to explore the urban as a key terrain where these ontologies and epistemologies are articulated.

The mediation of technologies for a new communication and representation of territory
Session S25 of the 32nd Italian Geographers Congress
The session, which is part of the 32nd Congress of Italian Geographers, will accept both theoretical and methodological proposals exploring the forms through wich ICTs, particularly the Web, have been changing the dynamics of territory representation in the last decades. Among other things, the proposal shoud focus on territorial communication forms for both political and administrative aims (the communication by and for citizens/investors) and tourist and cultural purposes (the communication by and for tourists/visitors).

The intertwining of walking and cities. Methods and experiences
Nous invitons à explorer l'hypothèse que l'intrication de la marche dans la ville la rend paradoxalement omniprésente et invisible. Moyen d'accès élémentaire aux services ou aux aménités, agent de liaison entre les modes de transport véhiculaire et entre les tâches programmées, micro-rouage au sein des macro-rouages de l'organisation personnelle et collective, la marche est d'autant plus essentielle qu'elle est moins valorisée, son extrême banalité dans la vie des individus lui donnant un caractère diffus et trivial. La question des formes et conséquences de cette intrication offre donc le cadre général au sein duquel nous invitons les chercheurs à présenter leurs méthodes et résultats de recherche. Il s'agit de prendre la mesure de l'importance de la marche dans le fonctionnement urbain, non seulement dans une variété de conditions physico-biologiques, mais aussi et inséparablement dans une variété d'interactions sociales, de représentations culturelles, de motivations individuelles et collectives ou de situations historiques.

A fundamental tool in the approach to space and in the relationships that societies maintain with it, direct observation or in situ is only simple in appearance Espaces et Sociétés thus invites authors to think about the way they have mobilized observation in their research. More specifically, we wish to explore the hypothesis that the plurality of the theoretical and technical declensions of observation are particularly striking when this concerns spaces, their configurations and their uses. What status does observation grant to space? What are the original manners to grasp places and the social activities which produce them? What are the criteria of validity of this method? Which criticisms can we address to observation as a method ?

This special issue of Belgeo is dedicated to the relations between art and space (publication planned for autumn 2014). We suggest three main directions for articles: the first one aims to collect epistemological reflections concerning the development of a geography of art(s), to understand its specificities and contributions. The other two consider artistic spatialities with two complementary approaches, related to the localisation and the spatial dynamics of individuals and artistic phenomena. This call for papers is aimed at researchers of different fields interested in the spatial dimensions of artistic phenomena.

7th International PhD Seminar Urbanism and Urbanization
This 7th edition of the U&U International PhD Seminar will be held at the ENSA Paris-Malaquais, under the scientific direction of the Laboratory of Infrastructure and Architecture Planning (LIAT). Continually facing new demands from epistemological or technical society, and now facing an economic and social crisis (especially in Europe), urban planning is forced to question its methods. The Seminar is intended for PhD Students who wish to present their ongoing research questioning aspects of the field of urban planning in a historical perspective, from a theoretical point of view or with a potential for practical implementation. The U&U International PhD Seminars take place exclusively in English and seek to promote the exchange of ideas, provoke debate amongst researchers, invite comparisons, cross-pollinate different disciplines and to highlight the latest ongoing research. It is a rare opportunity offered to young researchers to meet with prominent scientists and build a critical argument.

Ambiance and Atmospheres: Encountering New Material Frontiers
RGS-IBG Annual International Conference 2013
Recent work on affect in Anglophone human geography has opened up new material frontiers by theorizing affective atmospheres (Anderson 2009; Bissell 2010; McCormack 2008). In such work we see an adjustment of thinking towards and around the relations between bodies and their environment by considering the ways in which bodies are situated within diffuse, distributed, sensible, and potentially turbulent volumes. Such an emphasis on the atmospheric, taken in both its meteorological and felt/affective sense, is in many ways tied to an expanded conception of materiality that draws attention to “the vibrant, constitutive, aleatory, and even immaterial indices” of materiality and materialization (Coole and Frost 2010: 14; Bennett 2010).
