72nd IHAF congress

Le plus grand congrès réunissant les historiennes et historiens de l'Amérique française aura lieu cette année à Ottawa pour sa 72e édition. Plus de 120 communications aborderont avec des angles, des approches et des questions diverses le thème des Frontière/s. Comment s’exprime, en différentes époques, la notion de frontière en Amérique française? Comment évolue-t-elle au fil des siècles? Quelles sont ses représentations? Quels types de pouvoir impose-t-elle? C’est autour de ces questions que nous engageons les participant.e.s à proposer des pistes d’analyse empiriques, théoriques ou épistémologiques qui permettront de mieux problématiser la frontière.

North American Studies in France and Europe

State of the Art and Future Prospects

In 1980, François Furet established the first visiting chair in North American studies at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in partnership with the French-American Foundation. Yet, it was not until 1984 and the election of Jean Heffer as permanent full professor that the Center for North American Studies (CENA) came into being. Despite pioneering efforts in some English departments and the creation of the first university chair in North American history at the Sorbonne in 1967, there was significant disparity between the importance of the USA in the contemporary world and the weakness of North American studies in France. Over the last thirty years and under the supervision of Jean Heffer and François Weil, the CENA has become one of the leading institutions for North American scholarship in France and Europe.

À la suite d’un premier colloque, tenu à Montréal en 2011, le présent colloque a pour but de poursuivre le dialogue qui s’y était engagé entre chercheur-es de différents horizons et disciplines. La perspective comparée doit permettre d’apprécier le rôle des acteurs, associations privées, organes gouvernementaux ou organisations internationales qui favorisent la migration au Québec et en France. Elle permettra, par ailleurs, d’analyser les récits et les imaginaires des migrants et la manière dont ils ont justifié leur départ dans l’un ou l’autre pays.
