LGBTQIA+ sexualities: subjectivities, movements, languages

LGBTQIA+ studies for contemporary history, having produced a vast amount of researches, are still questioning history and historiography: how can LGBTQIA+ history be written? Does it merely overlap with the history of LGBTQIA+ subjectivities or does it exceed the boundaries of the LGBTQIA+ community? Does it challenge the historical imagination in terms of sources, archives, political and disciplinary boundaries, gender categories? Diacronie. Studi di Storia Contemporanea is looking for contributions aimed at investigating these issues.

Trans Identities in the French media

Abstracts are welcome for an edited volume that will address the question of the representations of trans identities in the French media. This volume aims more specifically at observing how trans identities have been portrayed in the past decades (from the 1990s’ to the present time). Possible topics include (but are not limited to)(a) the evolution of the representation of trans identities in news coverage, (b) transgender characters in films and series, (c) pitfalls and biases regarding the way trans identities are portrayed in the French media, and/or (d) the analysis of a specific body of work.

La revue Simone de Beauvoir Studies est à la recherche d’articles et de textes autobiographiques, créatifs, essayistiques ou journalistiques, tous domaines de recherche et sphères culturelles confondus, qui explorent des idées inédites ou insuffisamment traitées de manière à enrichir les échanges autour de l’héritage de Beauvoir. Les textes soumis ne doivent pas nécessairement étudier les écrits de Beauvoir ; le comité éditorial encourage les propositions qui abordent des aspects centraux de son travail, tels que les études de genre, la politique mondiale, l’existentialisme et la théorie littéraire.

À l'occasion du centième anniversaire du congrès de Tours et de la création du parti communiste en France, cette journée d’étude suivie d’une table ronde grand public porte sur l’histoire des communistes à l’épreuve du genre, en privilégiant une approche par le bas, attentive aux itinéraires, aux identités et aux expériences militantes, et à ce qu’elles révèlent des représentations de la masculinité et de la féminité, dans les mondes communistes militants.

“Marine Feet and Vesuvian Eyes”: The Volcanic Aesthetics of Maria Orsini Natale

Edited Collection

This volume intends to fill a gap in the critical reception of a remarkable Southern Italian woman writer. A journalist, a poet and a writer, Maria Orsini Natale (1928-2010) lived and worked at the foot of Vesuvius, and began writing at age 69, receiving several literary recognitions. Her novel, initially written as Ottocento Vesuviano, then entitled Francesca and Nunziata, and published for the first time in 1995, was also made into a 2001 film directed by Lina Wertmüller, starring Sophia Loren and Giancarlo Giannini. The book earned her a semifinalist’s place in the Strega Prize, the most prestigious Italian literary award, and features a family from Amalfi, dedicated for generations to the white art of pasta making. More than fiction, it illustrates what in Neapolitan is called a ‘cunto’, part historical account and part allegorical tale, derived from a reservoir of collective as well as personal memories.

La journée d’études « Tuer les pères : Femmes derrière la caméra dans les films de famille » propose une réflexion collective autour des images d’amateur tournées en famille. En affirmant et en perpétuant l’institution familiale dans sa configuration patriarcale, nucléaire et hétérosexuelle, le film de famille a contribué à reproduire les codes et les hiérarchies de genre et de sexualité de la société bourgeoise. En concevant le cinéma d’amateur comme une « technologie de genre » (De Lauretis, 1987), nous invitons des communications portant sur les images réalisées par des femmes-amatrices afin de découvrir et décortiquer leur propre « regard familial ».

C'est dans cette perspective qu'un colloque se tiendra à Lausanne en octobre 2019, consacré aux mouvements lesbiens, homosexuels et trans en France, dans les années 1970-1980.

The one-day event, featuring leading experts in the field Regina Mühlhäuser and Anna Hájková, will combine an introductory lecture, two panels of talks, and close work with primary sources. Reshaping the Nation

Collective Identities and Post-War Violence in Europe 1944–1948

The conference will analyze the composition of nationalities (who belonged to the national community?), the legitimizing function of nationalism, and its relation to acts of violence at the end of war and to the reshaping of postwar societies. At the same time, we want to address the differences between countries. How did a specific occupation policy in a specific place, with its specific national and racist criteria, influence the “responses” of the occupied society? Is there any evidence of a biological understanding of nationhood? How did competing concepts shape a new understanding of the “nation”—particularly taking into consideration the different political and cultural developments in various nation-states after the war ended? We are interested in papers that touch upon violent acts occurring at the end of World War II and stemming from nationalism as reshaped by previous war experiences.

(Re)découvrir Nelly Arcan

Nelly Arcan est une écrivaine d’origine québécoise. Putain, son premier livre, publié en 2001, est rapidement devenu un bestseller et a été retenu dans les sélections des prix Médicis et Femina. Par la suite, Arcan a publié une autre autofiction, deux romans, des chroniques journalistiques et un album illustré. Ces volumes ont été suivis par la publication d’un essai posthume, Burqa de chair. Elle s’est donné la mort en septembre 2009. Ce colloque vise à réunir les chercheurs et chercheuses dont les travaux portent sur l’œuvre arcanienne, qu’ils ou elles la fréquentent de longue date ou depuis peu, et qu’ils ou elles souhaitent présenter des travaux en cours ou soumettre son œuvre à de nouvelles questions.

Ce colloque a pour vocation de rassembler diverses catégories d'acteurs : des chercheurs – historiens, politologues, sociologues, anthropologues, – mais aussi des professionnels de l’humanitaire. L’objectif est de comprendre l’importance de faire l’histoire de l’humanitaire au prisme du genre. Le colloque se concentre sur les actions qui concernent l’Europe, aussi bien du côté des intervenants que des bénéficiaires. Il s’attachera particulièrement aux représentations, au fonctionnement des organisations et aux rapports entre les différents acteurs de l’humanitaire qui ont été porteurs d’attitudes discriminatoires et d’inégalités de genre.

Minimising Risks, Selling Promises?

Reproductive Health, Techno-Scientific Innovations and the Production of Ignorance

Over the last decades, medical techno-scientific innovations have radically transformed reproductive processes at every level by putting the reproductive body under strict biomedical surveillance and submitting it to significant technological manipulation. Most of these innovations, often promoted as miracles and even revolutions, were generalised very rapidly thanks to ever-growing national and global markets. Their side effects on health were, however, insufficiently studied, or even ignored, until scandals (diethylstilbestrol, thalidomide, primodos, Dalkon Shield) or controversies (contraceptive pill, hormonal replacement therapy) unavoidably made them public. At the crossroads of STS, sociology of risk, medical anthropology, gender studies and ignorance studies, the aim of this international conference is to analyse the dynamics of ignorance production prior to, during but also after the rapid expansion of reproductive technologies, innovations and products.
