An interdisciplinary dialogue between maritime historians and archaeologists

This conference will close a four-years French-Taiwanese research project (ANR/MOST) on Maritime Knowledge for Asian seas (seaFaring), which propose to reconsider, and possibly to review, our knowledge on China’s seafaring tradition through a new approach focusing on the practical know-how available to the craftsmen, seamen and merchants during the 16^th-18^th centuries, with special emphasis on sailing and trading knowledge and practices.

The Middle East and Europe: cross-cultural, diplomatic and economic exchanges in the early modern period (1500-1820)

This conference is an international symposium that proposes to study the entire range of exchanges and relations established between these two areas during the Early Modern Times (1500-1820). Its main objective is to think about diplomatic, economic, religious and cultural links between Europe and the Middle East by calling upon over twenty researchers with specializations in the Arab, Persian and Muslim world. In addition, this conference will provide a comprehensive overview to date of the Arabian Gulf at a time of major political change, including the successive arrival of the European “trading empires”. It will focus on some of the methodological challenges raised by a global, connected and cross-cultural thinking approach to the History of the Middle East and Europe”.

Within the rapidly expanding area of research on food and foodways, the medieval eastern Mediterranean is still very much an unexplored area. The aim of the POMEDOR project (People, Pottery and Food in the Medieval Eastern Mediterranean) was to explore this new field in a multidisciplinary way and to stimulate further research.

The Role of Women in Work and Society

French historians are concerned by women’s history since thirty years, but studies are manly dealing with the Occident. For the ancient Near East, there is now a great deal of limited studies on women and gender history, but few syntheses. Furthermore, economic history is well represented in Assyriology, thanks to the good preservation of dozen of thousands of clay tablets recording administrative operations, contracts and acts dealing with family law. Despite these voluminous sources, the topic of work has not been much addressed. The thirty participants of this conference will examine the various economic occupations involving women, in a gender perspective, over the three millennia of Near Eastern history.

Consuls, figures of sales intermediation in Europe and in the Mediterranean world (17th-19th century)

Le colloque « Les consuls, figures de l’intermédiation marchande » est organisé dans le cadre du projet de recherche « Les figures de l’intermédiation marchande en Europe et dans le monde méditerranéen (XVI^e -XXI^e siècle) », inscrit dans l’axe 1 du programme quinquennal 2012-2016 du Centre de la méditerranée moderne et contemporaine (université de Nice Sophia Antipolis). Ce projet, à travers l’étude de figures de l’intermédiation marchande (commis voyageurs et agents de commerce, consuls, courtiers, commissionnaires, capitaines de navires), entend développer une réflexion sur les principales transformations qu’a connues la pratique du commerce à distance durant les époques moderne et contemporaine.

Table ronde organisée par l’Institut universitaire de France, l’université de Lyon 2, l’UMR 5189 HISOMA et la Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée, l’université de Lille 3 et l’UMR 8164 HALMA-IPEL. La question est d’abord méthodologique : à quoi reconnaît-on une crise, ou inversement des indices de croissance, dans nos sources ? Comment peut-on analyser, en contexte, une amélioration des conditions de vie des populations ? Comment interpréter les moments d’échec dans les économies antiques ? Il s’agit également de s’interroger sur la formulation et la perception par les Anciens de ces notions de crise, de croissance et de progrès.

L’Anatolie comme objet d’étude a intéressé les archéologues, les historiens, les géographes, les sociologues et de nombreux chercheurs d’autres disciplines, car c’est un espace à l’histoire riche et complexe, qui a vu se succéder depuis l’Antiquité de nombreux peuples comme les Hittites, les Phrygiens, les Lydiens, les Grecs, les Perses, les Romains, les Byzantins, les Turcs seldjoukides et ottomans. Cet espace, cœur de l’Empire ottoman et de la République de Turquie, a donné lieu à de nombreux ouvrages sur ses ressources naturelles, les minorités qui le peuplent, ses vestiges archéologiques. L’objet de ce symposium international et pluridisciplinaire est de réunir des spécialistes en histoire, géographie, sociologie, archéologie et littérature pour définir les particularismes culturels, politiques et territoriaux de cette région, et revisiter les clichés actuels ou hérités de l’historiographie de chacune des disciplines.

The metropolises of Tokyo-Yokohama, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Singapore located on the periphery of East Asia’s maritime corridor, form a system which is characterized by the intensity of their economic links, the different relationships they have with their hinterlands, and their level of integration within the world economy.

Dans le cadre du programme pluriannuel du GDR « Les Entreprises françaises sous l’Occupation », il était indispensable de consacrer un colloque spécifique à la question de l’activité des entreprises dans l’outre-mer français. Le colloque s’attache à reconstituer la stratégie, les activités et les performances des entreprises insérées dans l’empire français, qu’il s’agisse d’entreprises locales, d’entreprises métropolitaines actives en outre-mer ou même d’entreprises étrangères. Les comportements des différents acteurs impliqués, patronaux aussi bien que salariés, et la manière dont ils ont pu être appréciés après la guerre sont également appréhendés.
