Articuler l’histoire sociale et environnementale
Proche-Orient, Maghreb, Afrique (XIXe-XXIe siècle)
Cette journée d’étude a pour objectif de rassembler des historien-ne-s contemporanéistes spécialistes du Proche-Orient, du Maghreb et de l’Afrique travaillant dans une optique environnementale. Si la trame politique globale de l’histoire moderne et contemporaine de ces régions est bien connue (domination impériale ottomane ou monarchique locale, tutelle coloniale européenne, accession à la souveraineté nationale), les dynamiques sociales, juridiques et environnementales sont sous-documentées. Cette rencontre ambitionne de renforcer les liens entre des « aires » habituellement séparées tout en englobant une diversité de zones climatiques et d’écosystèmes, des côtes méditerranéennes aux forêts tropicales, en passant par les milieux désertiques. Afin de permettre un dialogue heuristique, il s’agira de réfléchir plus particulièrement aux manières d’articuler histoire sociale et environnementale, à partir de cas précisément situés et dans une approche comparatiste attentive aux sources mobilisées.

L’objectif de ce numéro de la revue Espace & Sociétés est de confronter différents contextes géographiques nationaux afin d’interroger les mécanismes sociaux, politiques et institutionnels qui produisent une altérité fondée sur la race - dans les processus d’urbanisation notamment, mais pas exclusivement. Autrement écrit, nous nous intéressons au rôle du racisme dans la constitution d’un « spatialisme racial ».

1956-1958: A revolutionary period that changed Africa (and the world)
The objective of this panel is to compare the various social mobilizations that took place in Africa during the years 1956-1958 and which arguably constitute a historical watershed. The main aim of the panel is not the making of an abstract comparative analysis, but the analysis, based on the testimonial material collected, of how the memory of these events has been structured over time. Moreover, we are interested in understanding what the impacts of these social movements were on the structuring of states and what continuities can be found between the mobilizations of that period and the ary social mobilizations that have shaken the continent in the last ten years, from the ‘Arab Spring’ of 2011 onwards.

What have Mesopotamian Empires ever done for their people? Tracking the macro in the micro
In this workshop, we aim to take the view from below and investigate in what way imperial dynamics may have affected the lifeways of people in their territories. The basic questions of this workshop are: How did the empires of the Ancient Near East affect the lives of ordinary people in their realm? To which extent was rural life and life in smaller towns permeated by imperial agents and policies, hence by imperial dynamics?

This issue of Arabian Humanities proposes to offer a multidisciplinary overview of the Sultanate of Oman contemporary period by bringing together old and recent works. It will focus as much on its history as on the major social and cultural changes that have taken place in its society. The aim is to explore the different aspects that can be observed today and which contribute to a better understanding of this country over time.

Towards a New Social History of Sudan
Cette conférence, qui est également un programme de recherche, souhaite remettre au centre de l’histoire moderne et contemporaine du Soudan les « gens ordinaires ». Nous souhaitons également nous intéresser à tous les thèmes liés à l’histoire des gens « exceptionnellement normaux » (Grendi 1977) : le quotidien, les croyances, les horizons et désirs, dans toute leur diversité selon classe sociale et origine, mais aussi dans tous leurs liens et circulations. Même si la microhistoire a surtout marqué l’historiographie européenne, elle a inspiré aussi des nombreuses études en histoire du Moyen Orient et de l’Afrique (voir l’historiographie de l’Afrique du Sud). Elle a aussi des affinités avec des historiographies non-européennes comme les Études subalternes (malgré leurs différences reconnues). Nous croyons que le croisement de ces approches ne peut que mener à une meilleure connaissance des acteurs et actrices « ordinaires ».

Revue d’histoire de l’enfance « irrégulière » | Numéro thématique 22 – 2020
Over the past several years, historiography that combines Childhood and Youth Studies with Colonial/Postcolonial Studies has demonstrated the importance of the place and role of children and youth in imperial constructions. In 2012, the Revue d’histoire de l’enfance “irrégulière” (RHEI) contributed to the development of this field with its issue on “Displaced Childhoods in Colonial Contexts” (no. 14, 2012). The journal will continue to explore new paths of research on this subject by dedicating issue 22 (2020) to child protection in colonial and post-colonial contexts.

A global history of free ports
Capitalism, commerce and geopolotics (1600-1900)
Exactly how free ports arose in early-modern Europe is still subject to debate. Livorno, Genoa and other Italian cities became famous as major examples of a particular way of attracting trade. Between the late eighteenth and the nineteenth century the existence of free ports – as specific fiscal, cultural, political and economic entities with different local functions and characteristics – developed from an Italian and European into a global phenomenon. While a general history of free ports – from their first emergence to the present-day special economic zones – has never been written, this research network aims to pave the way for such an enterprise. The history of free ports research network is organising a number of conferences in the next years, in order to work towards a standard publication and interactive research platform for the history of free ports from the XVIth to the early XXth century.

A new history of prisons and incarceration?
L'histoire des pratiques d'enfermement suscite actuellement un nouvel intérêt au niveau international. Longtemps concentrés, dans le sillage des travaux de Michel Foucault ou de Michelle Perrot, par exemple, à l'époque contemporaine, les travaux dans ce domaine s'interrogent aujourd'hui davantage sur les époques précédentes. Profitant des apports nombreux des historiographies anglaise et nord-américaine, hispanique, italienne ou germanophone, cette nouvelle histoire de l'enfermement s'élargit en outre vers d'autres pratiques qui dépassent la seule prison pénale. Ces premières journées, sous forme d’atelier, seront consacrées à un état de la recherche ; elles entendent constituer un jalon dans la formation projetée d’un réseau international centré sur l’étude des enfermements, plus particulièrement à l’époque moderne.

The family in the Arab-Islamic medieval world - parenthood, power and marginality
Parenté, pouvoir et marginalité
La famille dans le monde arabo-islamique médiéval suscite toujours l’intérêt des historiens médiévistes puisqu’elle représente encore un thème de recherche important et peu étudié au Moyen Âge, malgré les travaux bien connus déjà réalisés. Nous envisageons d’approfondir la recherche sur ce thème autour de trois axes : la parenté, le pouvoir et la marginalité. Dans une perspective pluridisciplinaire et comparative, notre appel à communication est adressé aussi aux chercheurs des autres spécialités et des autres périodes historiques.

Cette journée d'étude pluridisciplinaire est consacrée à l'histoire de la magistrature à l'époque du premier empire colonial, dans une perspective d'histoire institutionnelle, judiciaire et d'histoire sociale, dans l'ensemble des colonies européennes de l'époque moderne et au début du XIXe siècle. Etudier les spécificités des anciennes magistratures coloniales dans leurs statuts, leurs carrières, leurs manières de rendre la justice, leur implication dans le système colonial, leurs liens avec la société coloniale, etc. L'histoire de la colonisation passe par celle de ceux qui ont été des acteurs majeurs de ce complexe phénomène historique. Alors que la société judiciaire du second empire colonial (post 1850) a fait l'objet de travaux approfondis, celle de l'ancien régime colonial mérite d'étre étudiée dans une perspective colonialiste.

"Blue and white" - Chinese-style
Porcelain and earthenware - between visual sources and material realities (16th-18th century)
La production de « bleu et blanc » chinois ou « d’inspiration chinoise » constitue un objet d’étude significatif. Ces fameuses porcelaines, fabriquées notamment à Jingdezhen (Jiangxi) durant l’époque Yuan, ont commencé à circuler au sein des cours européennes à l’aube du XVIe siècle. C’est seulement au cours du XVIIe siècle qu’elles furent l’objet d’un engouement plus large donnant lieu à la fabrication de copies sous la forme de céramiques de diverses qualités. De cette nouvelle « mode » sont nés des substituts inspirés des modèles chinois, accessibles aux bourses les plus modestes. Ainsi est apparu l’épiphénomène des faïences dites « au goût de la Chine ».

Palfreys and rounceys, hackneys and packhorses, warhorses and coursers, not to mention the mysterious “dung mare” – they were all part of everyday life in the Middle Ages. Every cleric and monk, no matter how immersed in his devotional routine and books he would be, every nun, no matter how reclusive her life, every peasant, no matter how poor his household, would have some experience of horses. To the medieval people, horses were as habitual as cars in the modern times. Besides, there was the daily co-existence with horses to which many representatives of the gentry and nobility – both male and female – were exposed, which far exceeds the experience of most amateur riders today.

Interactions between the Twelver Shia and Christians - history, theology and literature
Les interactions et échanges entre des représentants chiʿites duodécimains et chrétiens, catholiques ainsi que protestants, ont rarement donné lieu à une étude détaillée. Pourtant, les contacts réciproques ont été nombreux comme l’indiquent les récits de voyageurs, les rapports de missionnaires, les textes théologiques et polémiques, les lettres diplomatiques, etc. Ces sources présentes dans les archives et bibliothèques européennes, mais aussi en Iran et Irak, restent pour une très grande part à étudier. Ce colloque s’assigne pour objectif d’identifier la nature de ces relations interculturelles selon les époques, les milieux, les géographies.
