Mais cette révolution s’inscrit dans le contexte international post-1968 avec une Guerre froide en phase de détente, dont elle est également le produit. Elle a exercé un fort attrait sur la scène internationale, au point de devenir source d’inspiration. À l’occasion du 50e anniversaire du 25 avril 1974, cette journée d’étude dresse un état des lieux et quelques perspectives de recherche sur la dimension internationale du printemps portugais.

The Americans in the western Mediterranean (1942-1945)

Landings, liberation and the "pax americana"

The objective of this meeting is to refocus the history of landings and subsequent military liberation operations in the Western Mediterranean, between 1942 and 1945, from an American perspective. Indeed, from Operation Torch in North Africa to the landing in Provence in August 1944 and the final battles in Italy in the spring of 1945, the United States asserted their decisions over the British within the coalition. Furthermore, the arrival of thousands of American soldiers, coupled with the installation of dozens of military bases in North Africa, Italy, Southern France, and Corsica, was accompanied by the establishment of various administrative structures by the United States to ensure a return to order and to set up a kind of "Pax Americana" according to their own interests. The interactions of these soldiers with the local populations sometimes lead to tensions. The aim, from a comparative perspective, is to go beyond the simple military dimension and broaden the study of this theater of operations to include political, economic, social, and cultural fields.

The theme of revenge, despite its spectacular and fascinating echoes, as well as its omnipresence throughout history, literature and the socio-political and economic trajectory of the entire Mediterranean region, has often only been the subject of fragmented and relatively scattered studies. In the collective unconscious, this lack of interest no doubt reflects a form of resistance to tackling a subject that is synonymous with the darkest and most negative facets of humanity. This issue of Confluences Méditerranée aims to explore this key and under-researched issue, drawing on a wide range of multidisciplinary contributions.

A Transatlantic Mediterranean?

Circulations, influences and civilian and military cooperation between the United States and Southern European and Turkish spaces (1945-1980's)

The objective of this meeting is to contribute to a transnational and decompartmentalized history of the circulations between Mediterranean Europe and the United States between 1945 and the 1980s, which will make it possible to apprehend these relations from a global point of view and to analyze the way in which these links were able to generate circulations of influence between Mediterranean countries. The aim is to combine diplomatic approaches with the socio-history of these actors and with the analysis of the circulation of knowledge and modes of governmentality, by placing Atlantic military issues and policies in the wider context of intellectual mobility and cross-practices. The European and Turkish Mediterranean is understood here in a broad and political sense, from Portugal to the confines of the Anatolian peninsula. Similarly, the ambition is to see how these relations between Mediterranean Europe and the Atlantic space may have had effects on the Southern and Eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea, whether during or after the period of colonial domination.

Ce colloque, pluridisciplinaire, se propose d’analyser, à travers les rapports sociaux de sexe, les dynamiques, ajustements et changements provoqués par les comportements alternatifs aux normes sociales, aux conventions familiales, aux pratiques sexuelles, etc. qui émergent dans les moments de bouleversements politiques et de migrations – comme ceux que l’on a connus dans le bassin méditerranéen. L’attention sera portée sur des exemples pris dans l’histoire longue ou dans l’actualité récente présentant les logiques d’affrontements, répressions, adaptations, violences, accommodements voire innovations qui s’expriment dans des résistances émancipatrices ou au contraire conservatrices et les dialogues Nord-Sud possibles dans ces contextes.

Literature and the challenge of conflict

Dans quelle mesure la littérature peut proposer un antidote à l’instrumentalisation de la mémoire ? Si Patrick Boucheron considère la littérature comme une « force supplétive de l’histoire », cette expression pourrait revêtir une acuité particulière lorsque l’accès au passé est fragilisé. Le colloque souhaite interroger la façon dont la littérature peut produire des discours et des récits mémoriels moins assujettis aux injonctions circonstancielles que les écrits de commémoration, voire même œuvrer à une représentation conflictuelle du passé.

Des historiens, archéologues, épigraphistes et philologues aborderont les rapports entre destruction et reprise en main, la distinction entre fondation et reconstruction, et proposeront des analyses ponctuelles, des études de cas ou des réflexions plus globales. Selon que les reconstructeurs sont les habitants d’avant la destruction ou un conquérant, et selon que la destruction est un fait de guerre, une catastrophe naturelle ou une volonté délibérée de rénovation et d’élimination des parties délabrées, la ville sera traitée comme un corps malade ou blessé et à soigner, réparer, amputer, ou comme un mort à enterrer, avec respect ou rage.

En histoire militaire, la guerre de siège représente une phase particulière des campagnes de conquête, phase qui peut être éclairée sous plusieurs angles. En premier lieu, les contingences matérielles, techniques et stratégiques méritent d’être observées, car le déploiement massif de troupes et de canons ne débouche pas toujours sur la victoire attendue ; en cas d’issue positive, le siège distingue le prince qui l’a conduit, alors que l’échec provoque une enquête pour trahison. Le plus souvent, par économie, l’assaillant préfère ouvrir des négociations pour emporter la place ; dès lors, les pourparlers intègrent des dimensions politiques et sociales déterminantes, surtout en période de guerres civiles, lorsqu’il faut établir les conditions d’une reddition.

Despite their collapses, their effects can be felt up to the present day. The Ottoman Empire’s history is usually divided into two phases: its construction and consolidation from the 14^th to the 17^th century, and its decay and collapse from the 18^th to the 20^th century.
