Making society without god or master. Can we envisage humanity without religion?

De la Révolution française au milieu du XIX^e, un grand nombre de pensées et théories ont cherché à réorganiser la société. Si l'on s'est surtout intéressé dans les sciences humaines et sociales à la portée politique de ces théories, leur dimension religieuse n'est pas négligeable. Des Lumières aux premiers socialismes en passant par de nombreuses théories de philanthropie ou de réformes sociales, on constate que le religeux occupe une place importante dans ces pensées. Qu'il s'agisse de réinventer la religion, défendre sa tradition ou au contraire la voir disparaître, la création d'une nouvelle société aux XVIII^e et XIX^e siècles a conduit à de nombreuses pensées et théories qui articulent le religieux et le social. L'objectif de ce colloque est de revenir sur ces pensées du religieux en les confrontant aux discours politiques et pratiques sociales de leur époque.

Study day of the French Association for Contemporary Religious History

Depuis vingt-cinq ans, la question migratoire est prégnante dans le discours politique et médiatique, suscitant débat, interrogation, mais aussi travaux scientifiques. Si les chercheurs ont investi ce champ d’étude, l’analyse des interactions du phénomène avec le religieux est plus récente, mais souligne la place centrale qu’a pu occuper la religion dans les processus migratoires – aux origines de la migration, comme support de celle-ci, comme ressource à la fois spirituelle et sociale pour les déplacés –, et les transformations du religieux qu’ils induisent. La réflexion historique sur les articulations entre religion et migration dans le cadre transnational est à même de compléter ces travaux des sociologues, anthropologues, géographes et théologiens. On considèrera les grands mouvements de population à l’époque contemporaine (XIX^e - XX^e s.), forcés ou volontaires, sans exclure l’exil ni les migrations plus ponctuelles.

Les mouvements de la décolonisation et de la libération des peuples du Sud ont, au cours du XX^e siècle, essentiellement mené à un refus généralisé de la pensée des Lumières européennes : on peut notamment constater une forte critique postcoloniale de toute tendance d’universalisation du rationalisme de type cartésien ainsi que le refus des visées néocoloniales, néolibérales et hégémoniques, engendrées par l’impact des Lumières dans les sociétés à l’échelle globale. Les nouvelles littératures antillaises semblent pourtant une fois de plus, et à leur manière, faire circuler certaines valeurs éclairées, véhiculant ainsi un savoir autre, imprégné par sa localisation, à la fois dynamique et en perpétuel mouvement. Nos réflexions communes lors du congrès auront pour objet de décrire et d’analyser les raisons, les modes et les effets de cette transformation des valeurs éclairées par les littératures contemporaines, antillaises en l’occurrence.

This conference aims to deconstruct the ideas of rural religion as mechanically reproducing urban rituals and religious hierarchies and of the rural world as a space of cultural and religious resilience against urbanity. Rural areas represented an arena for very situational processes of negotiation between, on the one hand, administrative patterns and related social configurations, and, on the other hand, processes of social conformance to the very characteristics of a local specific rural environment, of adaptation to its peculiar habitus and religious customs, possibly involving gods whose competences directly mirrored a geophysical environment made of mountains, rivers, woods, etc.

Sur cette période très riche tant pour l’histoire politique, religieuse que culturelle de l’Europe et du monde, les perspectives s’annoncent vastes et aiguisent les appétits historiens. Dans ce contexte d’ouverture prometteuse, ce séminaire propose d’établir un état des lieux de l’historiographie abondante – et souvent polarisée – sur le pontificat du pape Pacelli, mais aussi d’identifier des pistes d’études, tout en nourrissant une dynamique collective de recherche.

Among other things, the conference aims to propose an innovative angle of approach: the intersection between the spaces and designations of the gods.

En 2019, le Centre de Recherches et d'Echanges sur Diffusion et l'Inculturation du Christianisme (CREDIC) consacre son colloque à la jeunesse chrétienne. Organisée dans la catéchèse ecclésiale comme dans des mouvements para-ecclésiaux ou dans des programmes d’engagement volontaire, elle a constamment été au centre des préoccupations des organismes missionnaires. En Europe, comme en Afrique, en Asie et dans les Amériques, elle a été un acteur et un destinataire des activités des Églises et des organisations missionnaires. L’objectif de ce colloque est d’étudier sous les angles historiques, anthropologiques, sociologiques comme psycho-pédagogiques, la place que tient la jeunesse — de l’enfant au jeune adulte — dans les missions outre-mer et dans les Eglises du Sud, depuis le XIXe siècle jusqu’à aujourd’hui.

Symbolic and Material Changes to Cult Images in the Classical and Medieval Ages

Iconotropy is a Greek word which literally means “image turning.” William J. Hamblin (2007) defines the term as “the accidental or deliberate misinterpretation by one culture of the images or myths of another one, especially so as to bring them into accord with those of the first culture.” In fact, iconotropy is commonly the result of the way cultures have dealt with images from foreign or earlier cultures. Numerous accounts from classical antiquity and the Middle Ages detail how cult images were involved in such processes of misinterpretation, both symbolically and materially. Pagan cultures for example deliberately misrepresented ancient ritual icons and incorporated new meanings to the mythical substratum, thus modifying the myth’s original meanings and bringing about a profound change to existing religious paradigms. Iconotropy is a fundamental concept in religious history, particularly of contexts in which religious changes, often turbulent, took place. At the same time, the iconotropic process of appropriating cult images brought with it changes in the materiality of those images...The conference hopes to generate new research questions and creative synergies by initiating conversation and the exchange of ideas among scholars in the arts and humanities.

Ce colloque entend explorer la contribution des prédicateurs à la critique politique. La prédication est porteuse, en effet, d’une puissance critique à l’égard des pouvoirs. Le simple fait que le clerc (et l’institution dont il relève) pose son intervention publique comme mission divine ouvre un espace à la contestation, à la subversion, vis-à-vis des pouvoirs temporels.
