Economic history and its models / Economists and history
Depuis quatre années, le séminaire histoire-économie, soutenu par quatre laboratoires lyonnais (CIHAM, HiSoMA, LARHRA, Triangle), a tenté de jeter des ponts entre ces disciplines en ne prenant ni la forme d’un « impérialisme de l’économie » ni d’une pure historicisation des systèmes de production et d’échange. Deux journées d’études vont clore cette tentative, en privilégiant une réflexion sur l’usage des modèles. Ce mot est entendu ici dans un sens assez large qui ne recoupe pas l’usage précis qu’en font les économistes. Ainsi, la démarche idéal-typique fondée par Max Weber peut être considérée, ici, comme un travail de modélisation. Ces journées d’études reposent également sur la conviction que le recours au temps long et à des aires chrono-culturelles multiples, depuis l’Antiquité et le Moyen Âge jusqu’aux temps modernes et contemporains, favorise la diversité des approches et le décloisonnement des analyses.

Craftsmen and metalworking in medieval cities: thirty five years later
The symposium Craftsmen and Metalworking in Medieval Cities: 35 Years Later addresses the metallurgies of iron, copper, tin, lead and precious metals, which produced a wide variety of objects necessary for urban life at the end of the Middle Ages. The nature, volume and possible standardization of production may be studied, as well as the needs of the city, the practices and techniques of craftsmen, their knowledge and know-how. The relationships between the crafts and between the craftsmen themselves might be examined, including dependency links, pluriactivity, networks of sociability or local relationships in urban areas. The identity and regulation of these crafts, their integration into urban society, their relationship with the surrounding rural areas and with other cities may also be revisited.

À travers des études de cas variés, des réflexions plus générales et en croisant les méthodes d’analyse, il s’agira de saisir, selon les époques et les lieux, les outils et les mécanismes de la construction de ces réputations et la manière dont elles agissent dans l’économie.

11th-17th centuries
This symposium will take stock of the theoretical ambition of this programme, relative to the disciplinary tools available to us today, to disclose, to distinguish and above all to ponder the historical connections established. If the plants, epidemics, commercial goods or written materials are proof of often-forgotten connections, they inform us only indirectly on the intensity and consequences of these economic, political and cultural connections for the societies of Southern, Eastern or Western Africa. Starting from this observation, the historians, archaeologists, linguists, and philologists involved in this release will reflect on multidisciplinary models that go beyond the observation of a connection and switch towards a more integrative concept of “route,” understood, in the broader sense, as a connection in progress. I this respect, the third and final objective of this symposium will stimulate further reflection on the routes that crisscrossed medieval Africa, and the practices, mobilities, and representations that they created.

The economy of stone in the Meuse valley and surrounding regions (1st century BC - 18th century)
The first edition of conferences dedicated to stone economics during the historical periods, which was held in Nancy in 2015, underlined the vitality of the research carried out about this subject, as illustrated by the recent works led in Lorraine. The Stone by Stone series of meetings aim to promote the relevance of stone economics research and to facilitate discussions about the topic, through a cycle of international conferences held every three years. The upcoming Stone by Stone II Symposium will be held in Namur and Dinant in December 2018. It will be co-organized by the University of Namur (AcanthuM – ILEE), by the University of Louvain-la-Neuve (UCL), by the University of Brussels (ULB/VUB), by the University of Lorraine, by the INRAP and by the Maison du Patrimoine medieval mosan, and by the AWAP (Agence wallonne du Patrimoine).

Coins and currency in the 10th and 11th centuries
Issuing authorities, political powers, economic influences
The 10th-11th centuries were crucial for the history of France. The centralized Carolingian state gave way to the regional principalities. Why this happened and how it affected society are core questions for historical research. The study of coins has a huge potential to contribute to this debate. Contrary to written documents, they survive in thousands. Contrary to other archaeological artefacts, coins are struck by official decision, reflecting the “state”. They are more closely datable them most other artefacts. Coins also circulate widely in many spheres of society, reflecting trade and economics.The conference Coins and currency in the 10th and 11th centuries takes advantage of this leap forward to reopen the debate. The aim of the conference is to bring numismatists, archaeologists and historians together in order to confront their ideas for the mutual benefit of historical knowledge.

Storage: production, accumulation and the redistribution of cereals in the medieval and modern west
Le 40e Colloque de Flaran est l’occasion, pour les historiens et les archéologues, de tenter un premier panorama des problématiques relatives au stockage alimentaire, en particulier céréalier, dans l’Europe médiévale et moderne, en s’attachant aux dispositifs matériels des mises en réserve (des modestes greniers aux zones à silos, des granges villageoises aux entrepôts urbains), ainsi qu’aux techniques de conservation. Ils s’intéresseront en outre à l’emplacement et à l’environnement des structures de stockage. On explorera les formes de prélèvement, de dépôt et de répartition qui ont défini l’organisation des sociétés européennes avant le Marché, tout en alimentant parfois les marchés locaux.

Histories and economic dynamics
30 years of the Comité pour l'histoire économique et financière de la France
Le Comité pour l’histoire économique et financière de la France (CHEFF) fête ses 30 ans. À cette occasion, le bureau de la Recherche de l’Institut de la gestion publique et du développement économique (ministères économiques et financiers) organise un colloque international le 25 septembre 2018, au centre Pierre-Mendès-France du ministère de l’Économie et des Finances, sur le thème Histoire(s) et dynamiques économiques. Cet évènement se veut à la fois un moment de bilan historiographique et de débats sur les enjeux et les chantiers de l’histoire économique aujourd’hui. À travers l’exemple du CHEFF, ce colloque propose également un retour sur expérience de la place et du rôle d’un comité d’histoire placé à l’intersection du monde de la recherche et de celui de l’action. À ce titre, il permet de questionner l’histoire et le devenir de ce type de structure.

Las siete partidas est un code unique de droit civil dans l’Europe médiévale. Suivant le modèle du Corpus Iuris Civilis, ce document est un vrai code, complet et systématique, organisé en livres, en titres et en lois, qui contraste formellement avec les autres grandes œuvres légales de l'Europe du XIIIe siècle. Dans le même temps, Las siete partidas ont été la source du système légal du royaume médiéval de Castille-Léon, et plus tard, de l'Espagne moderne et de tous les pays de langue espagnole colonisés par la métropole. Las siete partidas ont eu par ailleurs un profond impact sur les autres royaumes péninsulaires du monde hispanophone en raison de sa traduction en portugais, catalan et galicien

This two-day international conference aims to highlight recent and challenging interdisciplinary studies dealing with complex historical climate/society interactions in Mediterranean during the last two millennia. The study of these existing connections can help in better understanding the role played by past climatic events in the eruption of regional conflicts, in forced migration and displacement of people, in periodically appearing infectious disease outbreaks or in subsistence crises like food shortages and famines Similarly, it seems necessary to identify and analyze socio-economic and technological responses (e.g. water supply systems) together with mitigation and general adaptation strategies, insofar as they existed, to cope with climate change.

Silver on one side, gold on the other? The medieval Mediterranean was an area in which precious metals were produced and circulated, intertwining three worlds, both friends and foes: Roman Christianity to the West, byzantine Christianity to the East, and Islam to the South. Precious metals (gold, silver, copper and lead), at the origin of numerous objects of the material culture and currencies used by the economies, filled the societies. They were mined, processed, commercialised, controlled and hoarded by a wide variety of stakeholders and institutions, from simple peasants to emperors.

L’istituzione dotale si configurava come uno degli elementi strategici nelle forme di organizzazione delle società ebraiche in Antico regime. Il suo studio ravvicinato e comparato consente, pertanto, di gettare una luce su molteplici aspetti.

Material culture, an object at issue
Anthropology, archaeology and history
Alors que, dans les années 1960-1970, le concept de culture matérielle a été un outil heuristique important, mobilisé par historiens et archéologues, il a depuis connu un relatif effacement. Son utilisation a permis de faire converger de nombreuses problématiques et d’intégrer les objets dans leur matérialité même, et non seulement dans leur représentation écrite. La convergence entre archéologie et histoire, de même d’ailleurs qu’un certain usage de l’ethnographie ont été liés au désir de connaître les conditions de vie des plus humbles, c’est-à-dire non pas des marginaux et des exclus, mais des travailleurs dont l’activité a rendu possible la croissance médiévale comme la reprise du XVe siècle. Le but de cette première réunion en 2015 sera double : étudier l’historiographie de la culture matérielle et définir un programme scientifique qui permette de progresser dans notre compréhension de cet objet d’étude.
