New Technology-based Metamorphosis in Japan
In Japan, characters now invade social networks up to the point where a whole industry of character-camouflage is prompting millions of web users to merge with videogames-like creatures. How can we understand this phenomenon? What social changes does it contribute to shape and to mirror?During the course of an international workshop, researchers from various disciplines are invited to share their experiences and outcomes concerning this phenomenon, which has been stamped kyara-ka, “transforming into a character” (Aihara Hiroyuki, 2007). It is now giving birth to what Nozawa Shunsuke (2013) calls “an emerging art of self–fashioning”. Based on elaborate techniques of disguises, the kyara-ka phenomenon covers a variety of communication strategies and practices. Exploring all the aspects of this “thingification of humans”, the workshop will reflect on how and why a growing number of people market themselves as characters.

Hong Kong: protests, politics and identity
What factors are at the origin of these protest movements? What will be the impact in the formation of a new Hong Kong identity? What can be expected from the political evolution in Hong Kong and the relations between the city and the continent and the outside world? This symposium, organized by Professor Lun Zhang, attempts to clarify these issues. Several important Hong Kong academics and intellectuals, both actors and privileged observers of these protests and the political and cultural evolution of these last few decades to Hong Kong will be present to show their analysis. They will also dialogue with French Hong Kong specialists.

Emotional attachment to machines
New ways of relationship-building in Japan
Currently, technologies that foster emotional connections between humans and digital beings are perceived as a threat by many. Because emotional devices are considered to be make-believe systems based on ‘simulation’ (which is often confused with lying, deceit or fraud), emotional technologies could potentially be suspected of affecting human sexual identity or disrupting social bonds. This Symposium will examine the ways in which humans form intimate relationships with ‘emotionally-intelligent entities’ (robots, digital characters, downloadable boyfriend…) and what purposes these relationships to machines serve for them.

From the diversity of practices to legal definitions
La qualification pénale de traite des êtres humains recouvre des réalités très diverses en fonction de l’origine géographique des groupes criminels, du profils socio-démographiques des membres qui le composent, des formes d’exploitation (travail forcé, exploitation sexuelle, délinquance forcée….), du types de contraintes exercées, des modes de recrutement des victimes. Autant de paramètres difficiles à cerner et pourtant essentiels pour appréhender ce phénomène criminel dans sa complexité. De la compréhension du phénomène découle la pertinence de la qualification pénale, la construction d’une politique publique adaptée et la mise en œuvre d’actions de répression des auteurs ou de protection des victimes. Le colloque questionnera la pertinence des concepts existants pour saisir ces faits dans leur complexité. Il s’agira donc de travailler sur les notions de mafias, de groupe criminel organisé, de traite des êtres humains.

This international conference in political studies and political philosophy wishes to explore the notion of compromise in its transnational dimension, in order to test the relevance of a cultural and global approach to compromise. The topics addressed by the conference are the following: Can we develop morally right and wrong compromise typologies? Can we propose a universal ethics of compromise or does compromise vary depending on the socio-cultural history of a country? To what extent is culture relevant in shaping types and norms of compromise?

The Saint-Siège accords with the States (19th-21st centuries)
Models and changes from the confessional State to religious freedom
Ce colloque s’intéresse aux accords de droit international signés entre le Saint-Siège et les États, qui, le plus souvent mais pas exclusivement, ont pris la forme de concordats et de conventions similaires. Il s’agira de les examiner à la lumière des pratiques diplomatiques, mais aussi au regard des dynamiques politico-religieuses des XIXe-XXIe siècle, et notamment des principes et des exigences constitutifs de la modernité. Il conviendra d’en mesurer l’évolution historique dans la typologie, la méthode, les contenus, la portée et les espaces concernés. On s’intéressera tout particulièrement aux modèles de rapports entre l’Église, l’État et la société que portent ces accords, ainsi qu’aux mutations opérées, depuis les États confessionnels ou engagés dans une relation particulière avec l’Église catholique, jusqu’à l’approche renouvelée de ces relations après la seconde guerre mondiale et surtout Vatican II, fondée sur le concept de liberté religieuse.

La Bibliothèque nationale de France organise un colloque international pour célébrer le patrimoine sonore japonais présent dans ses collections. Ce colloque témoigne de la vitalité des liens noués entre la BnF et le Japon. Du foisonnement de ces archives sonores, trois thématiques ont été retenues pour ce colloque : la mémoire de la langue, la musique japonaise à l’époque moderne et contemporaine, le japonisme musical.

En 1868 au Japon, s’ouvre une nouvelle époque, universellement connue sous le nom d’ère Meiji. Ce phénomène entre révolution et restauration, pourrait plus justement apparaître comme une refondation culturelle. Ce terme de « refondation » voudrait évoquer le processus par lequel la culture prémoderne japonaise, que l’époque d’Edo avait portée à un niveau inégalé, est remodelée et réorientée vers des fins désormais reliées à la place nouvelle que le Japon se voit donner dans le monde. En conséquence, le colloque se concentrera sur la réorganisation interne d’un héritage perçu dès lors comme particulier, pour en faire le réceptacle et l’instrument d’une forme renouvelée de la culture asiatique dont le Japon entend se faire le champion.

Global Justice and New international Ordrer: The Case of Sino-african Relationships
The reconfiguration of the current world order within the contemporary international society constitutes the general framework of our reflection. Emerging countries such as Brazil, Russia, India and China aim to weigh on the course of history and to re-shape a balance of powers dating back to the end of the twentieth century. These countries intensify their external policies towards strategic areas rich in raw materials, especially in Africa, where Western nations also have interests. The persistence of global poverty, according to Pogge, refers to global justice, since this phenomenon results from a world order that structurally endorse an injustice which, furthermore, is not in line with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Limits of the western police model in China
In the past 20 years, the Research Center on Shanghai History (ECNU) and the Lyon Institute of East Asian Studies (IAO) have established close cooperative relations : joint projects, joint publications, joints conferences, as well as the co-training of graduate students have become significant and regular markers of increasingly close relationships. On this basis we hope to further co-promote Shanghai and Tianjin as centers of new urban history and social order. This project will avail new archival materials (municipalities archives), memoirs of policemen, photography, illustrated journals, correspondances, police reports etc…

The development of art history as a discipline during the 19th century has been variously associated with the politics of national identity, the needs of a growing bourgeois public in search of cultural capital, or of an expanding art market. However, the role of art training, and art practitioners themselves in the shaping of the discipline remains unexamined. Courses in art history had been systematically introduced in the curricula of art and architecture academies since the late 18th century, and spaces of art education count among the first institutional homes of the discipline, well before the establishment of autonomous university chairs. This conference aims to explore the interactions and productive tensions between art practice and art scholarship in the 19th century.

Tenu de choisir entre l’enseignement européen, dominé principalement par les écoles germaniques et françaises, ou l’enseignement influencé par les États-Unis d’Amérique, le musicien japonais a parfois dû se former au péril de sa propre identité culturelle. Pour autant, les artistes japonais semblent avoir préservé l’ontologie de leur musique tout en ayant assimilé certaines caractéristiques des cultures occidentales.

Chinese cultural spaces in Africa: distribution, arrangements, interaction
Depuis décembre 2011, le programme « Espaces de la culture chinoise en Afrique », financé par l'Agence nationale de la recherche, réunit spécialistes de la Chine et de différents pays africains pour étudier les espaces d'interactions socio-culturels liés à l'accroissement, la diversification et l'hétérogenéité de la « présence chinoise ». Le présent colloque présente et confronte les résultats des recherches sur des thématiques variées : histoire intellectuelle et représentations, implantation urbaine et marqueurs urbains, géopolitique du patrimoine, appropriations de la médecine traditionnelle chinoise, acteurs et figures de la médiation, culture matérielle chinoise en contextes africains.

Au lendemain de la seconde guerre mondiale, les intellectuels japonais reviennent sur la dérive impérialiste et réfléchissent sur les conditions d’une démocratie à reconstruire. Que reste-t-il aujourd’hui de ces débats ? Encore méconnus en Europe, ils glissent vers l’oubli au Japon. Pourtant, nombre de questions soulevées alors n’ont pas perdu de leur actualité. Des chercheurs japonais, coréens, suisses et français, discuteront des enjeux à relire ces auteurs aujourd’hui et entamerons une réflexion commune sur leur héritage par-delà les frontières.

As a result of the circulation and globalisation of knowledge, new centres and new peripheral areas have been formed and new hierarchies have quietly emerged, giving rise in turn to new competitive environments in which innovative knowledge is being produced. The centres in which knowledge in the social sciences and humanities is produced have moved towards Asia and in particular to China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan and India.

Où ? Quand ? Comment ? Avec qui ? Et après ?
GenERe proposera, les 11 et 12 décembre 2014, un colloque de deux jours portant sur les liens entre genre et sexualité(s). Il s'agira de questionner le contexte (où et quand ?) des pratiques en fonction du genre, autant que la réflexion sur ses relations avec les modalités mêmes de cette pratique (l’influence du genre sur la manière de faire l’amour). On essaiera aussi de voir comment les choix sexuels sont faits par les individus (avec qui ?), avant de s’intéresser aux conséquences genrées (et après ?) de ces choix, que ces conséquences soient liées à l’orientation sexuelle, aux relations à l’identité perçue ou assignée, ou aux partenaires choisi·e·s.
