Beyond Signification. The Return of Reality and the Crisis of Poststructuralism
Graduate Conference Philosophy FU BERLIN
Today a growing number of people in the Humanities suggest that the times of poststructuralism have come to an end. According to them we concentrated on symbols, signs and discourse for far too long. Did we not thereby forget the reality of things? How do we account for the materiality of media, experiments, and writing? What happened to reality, substantiality and presence? This conference aims at discussing contemporary criticism of poststructuralism, its historical conditions, its impact on the present, and its implications for the future. Does poststructuralism really fail to acknowledge reality? How do we evaluate the emerging new theories that challenge poststructuralism? -

Waqf: Modern State Control and Nationalization
Second Law of Waqf Conference
Following the first of three conferences on "The Law of Waqf" organised by Harvard Islamic Legal Studies Program which concentrated on the legal origins of waqf to Ottoman-era maturity (convened in May 2006), we are now solliciting abstracts for the second conference which will focus on colonial era law in relation to waqf (mid 19th century to the end of the colonial period). Both indigeneous and colonial law relating to the legal system of waqf are of interest to this conference which will occur in Cambridge, Mass., on 16-18 May 2008. All abstracts and papers are to be in English. -

Call for papers - Early modern
Durham University, 13-16 July 2007
How was power exercised, implicitly and explicitly, in the centuries of the medieval and Renaissance eras? How was it displayed and performed, theorised, ritualised, romanticised, codified, sanctified or opposed? The conference will consider questions such as these in a sequence of interdisciplinary sessions covering the full span of the periods and looking at social contexts ranging from the medieval republic of Iceland to the imperial courts of Renaissance Europe.
