  From debt to over-indebtedness in southern countries: Processes, practices and meanings

  International Workshop, Paris-IEDES, 7-8 december 09

  Organized by UMR 201, RUME India, Mexico, Madagascar, CIESAS (Mexico) (www.rume-rural-microfinance.org). The main purpose of this interdisciplinary workshop will be a theoretical and empirical examination of over-indebtedness from the perspective of southern countries, with the following underlying hypothesis: to define and analyze the process of indebtedness requires first an understanding of the complexity and diversity of debt relationships. The following questions might be addressed: 1) The social meaning of debt, creditworthiness and over-indebtedness. 2) Financial ‘markets’ and financial providers. 3) Financial culture. 4) Impoverishment and accumulation. 5) Over-indebtedness.

  Ottoman Urban Studies Seminar (2009-2010)

  Post-Ottoman Cities

  What is the historical experience of cities in the former territories of the Ottoman Empire - in the Balkans, Anatolia, the Middle East, and North Africa - in dealing with the impact of global changes and the transformation from Empire to nation States? How did people of different cultural, social and religious backgrounds live together? How are such examples of conviviality, conflict, migration, and urban regimes of governance and stratification conceptualized? And how have urban traditions been reinterpreted, and what bearing does this have on modern conceptions of civil society, multicultural societies, migration, or cosmopolitanism. These and other questions will be addressed in this year’s Seminar in Ottoman Urban Studies. Séminaire organisé par Ulrike Freitag et Nora Lafi.

  Afrique, 50 ans d’indépendance. Territoires, frontières, identités et développement

  Appel à contributions international pour un dossier de la revue Echogéo à paraître en juin 2010

  La revue Echogéo (http://echogeo.revues.org/) lance un appel à communications sur le thème : « Afrique, 50 ans d’indépendance. Territoires, frontières, identités et développement ». Il s'agit de contribuer au bilan géographique d'un demi siècle d'indépendance. Les textes, en français ou en anglais, devront privilégier des approches thématiques larges. Ils pourront aborder les changements d'ordre spatiaux ayant caractérisé les relations entre États, sociétés et territoires, ou, dans une perspective épistémologique, l'évolution des regards portés sur ceux-ci.

  Méthodes, approches et thèmes des recherches actuelles sur les arts visuels au Moyen-Orient et au Maghreb

  Double panel organisé par Silvia Naef et le SAP dans le cadre du dixième WOCMES

  Dans le champ qui nous occupe, le cadre de travail offert aux chercheurs reste souvent très peu performant, comme le montrent les choix qui s’ouvrent aux doctorants. Seuls quelques rares enseignements tiennent compte d’un phénomène qui caractérise pourtant les sociétés musulmanes depuis la fin du XIXe siècle, que ce soit en Europe ou en Amérique du Nord, tout autant que dans les pays concernés qui, encore aujourd’hui n’offrent à leurs jeunes candidats artistes et historiens de l'art qu’un apprentissage tourné vers l’histoire de l’art des pays occidentaux.

  Vivre les indépendances africaines au tournant des années 60

  Independence: through grassroot experience in the 1960s

  Un demi-siècle après les indépendances africaines, les années 2010 marquent, pour de nombreux pays du continent, le cinquantenaire de l’accession à l’indépendance politique. Le colloque international « Vivre les indépendances » a choisi de se reporter cinquante ans en arrière non pour célébrer mais pour offrir une relecture de l’événement aussi stimulante que possible. L’approche adoptée par la conférence Vivre les indépendances porte sur les aspects moins connus de ce moment précis des indépendances, à des échelles variées et sur divers plans : comment fut vécu le moment précis de l’indépendance mais aussi les quelques années qui l’ont précédé ou suivi ? Quelle atmosphère régnait dans les pays en devenir, de la capitale aux plus petits villages, des quartiers aux tribunes des manifestations officielles ?

  Les fronts écologiques / Eco-frontiers

  Entre terr(itoir)es, paysages et réseaux [Afrique du Sud, invité d'honneur] / Between land(scape), territory and networks [South Africa, invited country]

  Le thème du colloque « les "fronts écologiques", entre terr(itoir)es, paysage et réseaux » s’insère totalement dans les problématiques actuelles de recherches, théoriques et appliquées, sur le développement durable. En effet, un « front écologique » désigne un espace de faible densité de population, doté de valeurs écologiques et paysagères fortes et convoité par des acteurs aux motivations aussi variées que conflictuelles (tourisme, villégiature, protection de l’environnement, énergies alternatives, exploitation forestière etc.). Un « front écologique » est donc traversé par des enjeux multiples et systémiques qui font largement écho aux situations rencontrées aujourd’hui un peu partout dans le monde : question foncière, dynamiques territoriales, valorisation des paysages et protection de la nature et mise en réseau des espaces et des acteurs. Nous concevons donc la région d’accueil de ce colloque autant comme un lieu de débat que comme un terrain d’études et d’observations comparatives.

And how have urban traditions been reinterpreted, and what bearing does this have on modern conceptions of civil society, multicultural societies, migration, or cosmopolitanism. These and other questions will be addressed in this year’s Seminar in Ottoman Urban Studies, with a specific focus on daily life issues. This seminar is supported by the research program ‘Europe in the Middle East – The Middle East in Europe’ EUME with funds of the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung.
