Panel P204 - SIEF Congress
This panel would like to question the ways individual life-cycle or collective rituals and calendric festivals contribute to the emotional making of places. Case studies concerning different ritual shapes and places are welcome together with more theoretical or methodological presentations. -

Tourism and Seductions of Difference
Anthropologists have studied how separations between ‘Self’ and ‘Other’ become part of various public and personal aesthetics of everyday life. They have studied how the idea of differences between people, temporalities and places enable social actors to constitute and maintain selfhood within a wider cosmological scheme of social life. As tourism research spreads into the social sciences, this Conference will tackle one of the central ontological and phenomenological premises of tourism, the fascination with the idea of 'Others'. it will explore the seductive powers underlying this immersion of Self in the Other and the forms of social life and exchange its shapes at different scales of social life. It will bring together around 200 academics from more than 30 countries presenting 150 papers during four days. It also includes a film festival, various study tours, an ‘intergenerational’ networking event and a book fair. -

Ways to Legally Implement Intergenerational Justice
Comment faire ? -

The End Of The Portuguese Empire In A Comparative Perspective
In 1961, Portuguese rule in Africa came under severe stress. In its colony of Angola an attempt to release political detainees from the Luanda prisons by Angolan nationalists unleashed a wave of reprisals against the inhabitants of the muceques, thereby undermining the regime's cherished image of racial harmony. -

Things and Spirits: new approaches to materiality and immateriality
This conference is aimed at exploring new ways of approaching the tensional and intimate connections between ‘things’ and ‘spirits’ across distinct practices and epistemologies. In recent decades, the theme of materiality has gained wider currency and centrality in social sciences and anthropological theory. A growing number of scholars in the anthropology of religion, material culture studies, and history and sociology of science and technology have been reexamining the partition between humans, material objects, and immaterial entities, along with the ideas of agency, evidence, and materiality itself. -

Reverse-Exoticism: Writing Practices, Alternative Voices and Heritagization
This is a call for papers for a Special Interest Panel inclued in the Tourism and Seductions of Difference Conference (Lisbon, Portugal, 10-12 Sept 2010) directed by Cyril Isnart (Cidehus-Universidade de Évora) and Ema Pires (Cria-Iscte and Univ. de Évora). While academics have studied ‘heritage’ mainly in terms of a national or elite construction, this panel is interested in the increasingly loud claims to ‘heritage’ emanating from minorities and small social groups. Evoking Michel De Certeau (1988), our emphasis here is on analysing ‘scriptural practices’, both as cultural apparatus and means of production and objectification of minorities’ alternative voices. -

National culture and globalization: articulations and interplay
EGOS 2010 on globalization Sub-theme 14
