Atlantic Catholicism: The French-American connection

The Catholic Church is a particularly valuable topic for pursuing an internationalized approach to the history of the United States. French Catholicism has played an important but largely neglected role in the history of the United States because so many of the sources are in French, and because of the dispersion of the archives on both sides of the Atlantic. The rich French sources on religious history found in American archives (including those at the University of Notre Dame) remain underexplored by scholars from either France or the United States. The goals of this colloquium include facilitating conversation among scholars studying the intersection of French and American Catholicism from colonial times through the twentieth century, and identifying fruitful areas for further research.

Crime and Punishment in Modern Europe, 1870-1990

Conference in Washington DC, September 16-18, 2010

The German Historical Institutes in Washington and London are organizing an international conference on the history of criminal justice in modern Europe from 1870 to 1990. The conference will take place in Washington DC from September 16 to 18, 2010. The meeting is designed to take stock of recent and current research in this burgeoning field and to facilitate conversation between historians working on different countries in order to provide a comparative perspective on European developments.
